My brother used to play this on my mums grand piano and it would fill the house. I always thought it was beautiful but I hadn’t appreciated it fully until the last few years. After he passed I learned a simplified version (that I don’t have to stretch for) and it’s taken me back to this video so many damn times.

Been in love with a guy for about 5 yrs… or crushing on him at the very least. Only saw him once a month cus we were going to the same charity meetings but looked forward to every single one. We seemed to have a connection - he was a lovely, kind human being. finally summoned up the courage to ask him out for a coffee (after surviving covid) and he said he doesn’t like hot drinks. Then I asked him out (OUT) and he said he “wasn’t expecting that and was hoping to just stay friends”… oof. I thought I had given a few hints like texting him ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ followed by a Jim & Pam meme and Xxxxxs but I guess he doesn’t watch the Office. I love you, you beautiful human being. I’m the Jim in this equation and he’s my Pam, except in this version Pam is not interested and Jim got no real closure. I hope someone sees this and that it makes them laugh/cry ahah. I'm MJ and I'm an alcoholic. I've been listening to Bon Iver/Justin for years. He's got me through some tough times. This song resonates with me so hard because I've lost so many potential great relationships due to my drinking. But I'm glad they each saw their worth and left me for something better. I don't wish this pain to anyone. They deserved better, and I'm hoping they did. Sometimes, I wish I was worth loving in spite of my faults. But it's not easy loving someone like me. I just want you to know if you find this and i have loved you, please know that I still do...with all my broken heart.

UA-cam suggested this literally the day after my wife told me in couples counseling that she’s done. I said I was putting my foot down and I wanted to fight…and she cut me off “No. I said I’m not feeling those feelings for you”. Nothing to do after someone says that. So I leaned into…I listened to this song all day and sobbed.

Four days ago my partner of 6 years told me that she doesn't love me anymore... I never expected anything like that and it shattered my world. never felt anything like that... I've known and loved this song for so many years but only now I can really understand the words and pain Bon Iver is describing.
Eventually even the worst pain will slowly fade, but at the moment fully submerging into that pain is my way to go. It's better to feel pain than nothing at all.

This is the most inspirational, emotional song I've ever listened to...
An interesting fact about this version is it that it's still on UA-cam but since that EU law came in last year, it is unavailable in a lot of country's. If you use a VPN you can still find the video in UA-cam given you set your location to the right country (I don't know what country's it works in unfortunately)

Thank you. I get how this seems to be the definitive rendition for so many. Here you have an intense, stripped down matter-of-fact-like narration of a young man who is powerless. The love-you-don't-feel is like a force of nature he must learn he can't overcome, it's painful, cleansing and very cathartic. Bonnie Raitt's version however is about her love and how it's unchanged and unconditional. As a young man I could surely not have fathomed such depths and Justin here, cleverly, doesn't even attempt to. I mean, his version is my favourite too and he owns it. But Bonnie Raitt's is a different ballgame. Sorry about everyone else's though; to me they are but also-ran, but everyone is different and for you it might be someone else who chimes most.
Both versions are about the exact same thing, unrequited love, the only change in lyrics is at the end for this fellow "I found love"...
I’m sorry to but bonnie raits version sounds like one of those sample beats that come pre plugged into the piano. She’s great but it sounds so like lounge lizard, 70s and I can’t get over it. Justin just puts more soul into the instrumental…
