Een heel bezondere volkslied. We krijgen kippenvel. Ik ben Duitser en stadsgids in Berlijn en we zingen het volkslied altijd in de bus. Grandioos !!!! Bernd en Alois

One of the world's great national anthems and it is terrific to see it sung so enthusiastically by its citizens. Do not lose your historic culture!
You may also note, that in the very last frame, that the National Anthem was displayed on the 'big screens' for all to see, and sing...What a cop-out!! :-(
I agree that it is a shame that many people don't even know the first phrases of it. I personally think the 2 most important parts must be taught on school.
They're trying very hard to erase it.
But we Dutch people are stubborn, freedom loving and proud and resolved NOT to go the way of our South African brother nation.

Maybe a nice suggestion. translate the 6th couplet/verse, i guess thats the biggest reason why this anthem is special for the christians in the netherlands

Ik heb een voorstel, ipv "o God" het gebruik van "Wodan". Dus: "Mijn schild ende betrouwen zijt Gij Wodan mijn Heer!". Kijk dat klinkt al een stuk beter. xd

Zoey, you can't translate "van Duitsen bloed" with "of German Blood". The anthem was written in middle Dutch. The word " Duitsen, Dietsen etc" means "the people". Remember that we first speak of a German nation since 1876. Before that time the area was part of the Holy Roman Empire. Around 1572, the writer of the text did certainly not refer to a country that didn't exist as a united independent nation. Basically the text explains that William of Orange feels that he is part of the society formed by the people of the territory that is now the Netherlands.
