    BETASOM (an Italian language acronym of Bordeaux Sommergibile or Sommergibili) was a submarine base established at Bordeaux, France by the Regia Marina Italiana during World War II. From this base, Italian submarines participated in the Battle of the Atlantic from 1940 to 1943 as part of the Axis anti-shipping campaign against the Allies.

    Good information, i never realized the italian navy had such a large submarine fleet and did anything outside the med.

      That is because for decades non-Italian historians have either ignored or made false claims about it. Basil Liddel-Hart most famously said that "they achieved virtually nothing". S.E. Morison (who also made heavy racist remarks against the RM) didn't say anything about them.

    Thank you for covering this subject. Actually it's "Regia Marina" not "Marina Reale". Also, let's remember that at the beginning of the war, the Italian submarine fleet doubled that of Germany, making the offer to deploy units in Bordeaux very interesting. Anyway, here's my video on Betasom: ua-cam.com/video/qT0nrpjRuBQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ItalianMilitaryArchives

    Was the Italian navy not the Regia Marina? You kept saying Marina Reale.

      Because people either don't know, or don't care.
      Italians are supposed to be the butt of the joke, not actual combatants. Wartime propaganda and decades of reinforcing that has made sure of that.

    In terms of its surface fleet the Italian navy was much larger than the German Navy. The Germans outnumbered the Italians only in submarines.

    Never realized how similar in appearance the Italian boats were with the much more capable Japanese boats.

    • @historynerd88
      @historynerd88 6 місяців тому +3

      Why much more capable? If not for some spectacular success (like USS Wasp), Japanese submarines achieved rather little overall, especially against enemy sea lanes.

    • @Joe-u9l
      @Joe-u9l 6 місяців тому

      @@historynerd88 the doctrine was different, Japanese never attempted to interdict supply shipping. Their boats were actually very capable.

    • @historynerd88
      @historynerd88 6 місяців тому +2

      @user-ci7xi5kv8p I repeat, very capable in doing what? Their successes against Allied warships were limited, and didn't achieve much against shipping. So how they were better than the Italian ones? By what standards?

    My old boss a German sailed to Japan in a Italian submarine he was terrified you had to run to the front to get it to dive 😅

    • @gringoloco5989
      @gringoloco5989 6 місяців тому +3

      I think your " old boss " didn't tell you everything !
      This is the typical weight displacement in order to accelerate submerging in case of crash dive.
      Never forget, in WWII, autonomy on batteries was very limited and the major part of the trip was in surface, they dive only when suspecting the approach of a possible enemy and in case of a plane had to * crash dive ".
      Italian subs reaching Japan or Japan occupied territory are
      - Luigi Torelli (1943)
      - Reginaldo Giuliani (1944)
      - Comandante Cappellini (1943)

      There is a misunderstanding somewhere !
      I never said that there is no reason to be afraid, war is hell....
      I only said that when the crew have to run in the front part of a sub (torpedo room) its to help and accelerate diving
      When I said that your old boss didn't tell you everything it implied that it was in precise circumstances like crash diving and not due to poor quality of Italian subs as your comment let think.
      To my knowledge all German, Japanese and Italian subs were using this procedure to crash dive.

      It seems that Italian subs were mostly disarmed and used for transport and chartered by Germans to transport strategic materials to and from Japan.
      Some Italian subs had a much bigger capacity than German and the so called German " milk cows " (Milchkuhe) were better used (in the idea of Germans) to replenish the attack subs with torpedoes, food and fuel on operation theatre

      Mr. Butthead, Italians were very very good in frogman. Ask the British they lost 2 battleships. They had very good paratroopers also. And most of Rommels ant tank gun crews in the desert were Italian not German crews.

      Even brits recognized that fighting with such poor armament is more than courageous.
      It would be better keeping your opinion for yourself.
      Never in the army and reading books I suppose ?
      Easy to talk of courage or cowardice of others when never confronted to war.
