I've only read the first one when I was like ten years old & I really liked it. They all sound like so much fun though that I want to read & collect all the series. My tbr list just keeps growing lol.
That was awesome, enjoyed the ranking of the books. Frank Baum certainly had a gift to bring you into the story and wanna be friends with the characters and it's like your on the adventures. Your first choice is definitely a good book. My favorites is 1. The Emerald City of Oz, I love the idea of Aunt Em and Uncle Henry moving into the Emerald City. 2. Tik Tok of Oz I enjoy because I like Shaggy, an interesting character. 3. The Road to Oz I enjoy a lot cause I love Polychrome, she's so energetic and a fun character that's always happy go lucky. So many good stories. I hope too read the Ruth Thompson ones before long. Always good too see something about Oz. By way new subscriber here, anxious to learn about other books you share on here!!!
That's a fun top 3!! I love it! I totally spaced that the Shaggy Man was in Tik Tok of Oz! Have you read the Shaggy Man of Oz by Jack Snow? That book is so much fun because it's all about finding the origins of the love magnet, which I thought was a really intriguing idea for a story. Definitely read the Ruth Plumly Thompson ones too! They're definitely very different from Baum's as she interprets Oz in some different ways than Baum did, but she adds some amazing characters like Kabumpo into the mix! I think my favorite of hers is either The Wishing Horse of Oz #29 or The Hungry Tiger of Oz #20.
@@ShaunStevensonBooks No never heard of Jack Snow, but I'll definitely have to check it out. The origin of the love magnet sounds very interesting. I do enjoy a good fun adventure. Thanks for telling me bout it!!!
That's a great question! So overall, the books are mostly stand alone stories in the world of Oz, however there are characters introduced in certain books along with their back stories that appear very often later on in other Oz books. Generally, there's a good tendency by L. Frank Baum to give you a rough idea of who the characters are, but if you want to know their origin stories, it works well to read them in order. I read book 11 with only ever seeing the film from the 1930's and was able to jump in just fine. All that said though, there IS a major plot twist in book #2, The Land of Oz, that I think is worth reading through because it affects the rest of the whole series. The other book that has a kind of major plot point that affects the rest of the series is book #6, The Emerald City of Oz. Something takes place in the end of that book that does change a vital piece of Oz going forward, but most writers later on either ignore this plot point or explain it. So generally you can read them out of order, but there are some small side characters who might show up or objects that were discovered in earlier books that show up here and there that might be a tiny bit confusing. But it's not an overarching storyline you have to follow from book to book. Hope that makes sense! lol maybe I should make a video about it...
They're so fun!! They're often lighthearted and whimsical, but also feature some great characters who are really ahead of their time in so many ways! They also have some genuine danger and great puzzles in the sense of how will the characters get out of this kind of stuff!

They're super fun! I definitely recommend reading more! If you've read the first one, go right into #2 and see what you think!!

Can we read them out of order? Does it affect the overarching plot/theme?
That's a great question!
