  • Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Stephanie Syjuco, from the "San Francisco Bay Area" episode in the ninth season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"San Francisco Bay Area" premiered in September 2018 on PBS. Watch now on PBS and the PBS Video app: www.pbs.org/video/san-francis...
Stephanie Syjuco makes research-driven photographs, sculptures, and installations that explore the tension between the authentic and the counterfeit and challenge deep-seated assumptions about history, race, and labor. As a flashpoint of social and political protest, the Bay Area spurs Syjuco’s investigations of colonialism, capitalism, and citizenship, in works that range from her participatory projects to her studio-portrait photographs.
Stephanie Syjuco was born in Manila, Philippines, in 1974. Learn more about the artist at:

Blown away by the idea of having people create something they desire with the skills they have. This could REALLY catch on!

"What do we stand for?..." That is the big question we as Americans face today. America has always been this flowing melting pot able to reinvent itself along with culture and technology. Building strength with diversity as each new wave of immigrants chased their dreams to our shores. Things are different today because half our population has been guided by fear. Art today should be bold to hold a mirror to our citizens, exposing their weaknesses and dispelling their fears. Now is your time artists.

When SS starting dressing up (2:30 ff) in the traditional garb of the Negrito minority of the Philippines', it got pretty squeamish for me. Assuming SS is a member of the Malay majority, what she does there is really no different from a White woman dressing up as a Native American. Maybe it's some kind of satire of cultural appropriation that I didn't get? But it doesn't seem to square with what I assume are her progressive political stances generally.

I agree with you. Satire or not she's still benefiting from a culture that's not hers by using it for her projects.

Huh? She's a Filipino who was raised in the US. In fact, she comes from a family of well-known artists in the Philippines. She is addressing diaspora and "the other"/exoticism.
