Still the BEST TMNT Movie ever, 33 years later.
The Movie turned out the way that it did, because it was done by Golden Harvest. The Hong Kong Studio responsible for launching Cynthia Rothrock. They knew how to make the Fight Scenes good, and made them where you can actually see the Martial Artists Skills. New Line Cinema was the only American Studio to believe in the Movie's ability to be a success, and they signed on to be the Distributor of the Movie.

The turtles were designed by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and was one of the last major projects Henson himself had a hand in working on before his death. They still look amazing to this day, despite some visible malfunctions in some scenes.

And Henson himself said it was the most complex thing he ever worked on. Every turtle required a *team* of people. The in-suit actor, the ones running the facial control, and sometimes the voice actors.

The movie as some real depth.
The Father-sons relationships between the turtles and its mirror from a twisted angle with Shredder and the Foots.
The Growth of the Turtles, who felt lost without their Mentor and father, but overcame that emotional Hurdle ('evne tho they're glad as heck to have found their father safe)

It has a very Game of Death kind of feel. Ascending the levels to the final boss fight. And the fight choreography, shot in the Hong Kong style, is just so good. Not choppy and frantic, but showing off the martial arts and highlighting the amazing moves the stunt actors were doing in those bulky turtle suits. They really just did everything right in this movie, from the story to the puppetry to the fights. It was lightning in a bottle.

    Couple things:
The funeral for the pizza was because it had mold from sitting out too long. That’s why the question about liking penicillin was asked lol
The other thing is the turtles literally started as a joke amongst the two creators swapping drawings on napkins. Then it got serious once they realized they may have something lol
Lastly is the Daredevil connection and parallels. The connection is that the truck and chemicals that caused Matt to lose his sight and gain some ability is the same truck with chemicals that drops a canister of ooze into the sewer that the turtles and Splinter come upon. 1 truck, 1 accident, 6 heroes created. The joke/connection goes further due to a play on a couple names. The turtles fight the Foot, DD fights the Hand. Turtles mentor is Splinter, DDs mentor is Stick

This is why I'm glad I was born in the 80's and grew up during this era. People knew how to make things work for films back them and knew the potential of practical effects and how to apply and capture them the right way. Even kids films like TMNT had this darker element to them which I sorely miss. Additionally, everything that came out, not just movies, always had this next gen quality to it. Things felt more new and improved because you got to see the progression of technology and ideas. Ever since the mid 2000's, things have seemed to plateaued and just add on to existing ideas. Life is boring now and doesn't have the fun factor that it used to.

I think it would have been even better if Judith Hoag had came back as April but there was some issues preventing that. The new April wasn't that bad. But what really held the movie back was the censorship on the turtles using their weapons thanks to all the parents complaining.

The actors inside the turtles actually get cameos in the movie. Raphael actor is in the cab that Raph jumps on, Michelangelo actor is the one who got stiffed on the pizza tip, Donatello’s actor is the one that slaps April in the sewer & Leonardo’s actor plays a gang member when Casey is fighting Tatsu. This is the only time that Judith Hoag plays April in the live action cause she was a pain to work with and mean (keepin it PG) to her stunt doubles. The stunt actor for Donatello was so good and impressed the producers so much that they created a character for him in the next one. The creator of the turtles wanted them to be tied to Daredevil but had to settle to be a parallel story. He named the bad gang the foot instead of the hand and it was supposed to be if I’m remembering correctly Matt had the turtles in a bowl when the accident happened that made him blind and the same stuff that blinded him helped the turtles to grow and become intelligent. Splinter was a rat on the streets that saw the accident and took the turtles under his care. Too bad Marvel and the TMNT creators couldn’t work together that would be a great movie saga. 19:38 I love when Donny and Casey are working on the truck and calling each other names in alphabetical order.
    8:55 that was April’s wallet.

The comic book creator actually hated the cartoon. I'm glad they made the movie how it is. It has a lot more depth and heart.

  • @extantsanity
    @extantsanity 10 місяців тому +2

This movie is *ridiculously* underrated to this day... because it was so ahead of its time that the critics and adult media at the time didn't know what to make of it. But it's got TONS of heart, GREAT and POWERFUL lessons about family (contrasting Shredder's faux version and Splinter's healthy one), and it was actually taken seriously by the people making it. And (ironically) in most of the other superhero franchises, studios were initially AFRAID to show comic-accurate characters, which is how we ended up with X-men in black leather, trying to quip about "What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?" (YES!). Aside from Batman, it took WAYYYY too long for for a franchise like the MCU to come along and prove that comic-accurate characters are what we actually WANT. Meanwhile, the Ninja Turtles STARTED comic-accurate, and got downgraded over time. WTF was with those CGI monsters where they grew noses???
The first sequel to this movie (Secret of the Ooze) is actually pretty good and worth a reaction. But, it should be noted that the studio interfered a lot because they didn't like the first movie, and they gave it the Snyder-to-Whedon treatment of adding jokes and lightening it up, taking out many of the adult (i.e. meaningful) themes. Still, there's a joke in there about finding one of the turtles that SLAYS. I fucking died for years and years, just playing that joke from memory. The setup, punchline... golden.

Love these movies. Movies from the 90s-early 2000s were a different breed. They didnt need flashy animation or a super famous casting. They just had good writing that got you invested. Those that had life lessons or hidden messaging were still hidden enough that it didnt affect the experience. You could just sit back and enjoy them. If were in the sensitive try not to offend anyone period these days than back then it was the hardly anybody gives a fck work out your own problems and live life to the fullest era. Where family movies could thrive and comedy gold existed in various forms.

Unfortunately, the movies after this one changed a lot. They changed up the fighting style to more defense moves rather than attack moves to soften the violence. There were also complaints of the movie being "too dark", that also changes in the later movies. They basically changed everything that made this movie work so well.

This movie was produced by Golden Harvest, a Hong Kong studio, and features their stunt crew. That's why the fights are well choreographed and held in wider, more sustained shots. It wasn't the Hong Kong style to cut the action up into a million pieces, they always wanted to showcase the martial arts. And that's a big part of why the action holds up so well.

What continues to do it for me with this movie is, when you break it down to its core, is a coming of age story where four brothers have to get over a major loss to come together and stop a local crime boss and rescue their father.
The familial parallels and the difference between the Turtles family and the Foot “family” adds to the level of learning life lessons that help shape us to who we are meant to be.
Fun Fact, if you watch this knowing of “The Last Ronin” story plot and knowing that there were removed scenes where April is concerned for Michelangelo during the farm scene because he takes the loss the hardest, it just adds such a new level.
Easily my favorite movie of all time for many reasons and gets rewatched frequently.
