Opening a bookstore in my opinion is never a mistake. Wish there were more. I much prefer going to a physical store and getting lost in the shelves for a few hours.
@@johnochiltree1170 Well you just said it's NEVER a mistake. It's not a matter of weather it could potentially be. I am sure there are many, many, many situations when it almost certainly is.
I agree, book stores especially small, boutique ones are special! However owning a book store as a business, where people browse shelves and maybe buy 1-2 books is a very tough business to be unless you have insanely high foot traffic. The operating costs are in the thousands of dollars each month, just think about that. They have to sell A LOT of books to cover their costs and I'm sure it will be his actual business as writer/speaker, etc. that will keep it going. I do wish them the best of luck of course, love Ryan and what he's doing!
Every time I saw his videos on this space I had always assumed it was just his office on his house and he just owns that many books. This now makes way more sense
I opened a bookshop in 2003 For 10 years it ran pretty well. In 2013 amazon killed my revenue and I need to close it. I never will forget this wonderful years😊
My dad was in business for decades. He was a builder but also financed. When I was working on my MBA, he loved it when I would say, "hey dad, here's a new way you've been doing it wrong all these years!" When I took a financial accounting class, in the first chapter, at least six times, it said how we needed to be using fancy calculators and spreadsheets and that the old mortgage rate books were out of style. We'd been using those books for so long that we could interpolate within a penny or two the amount of payment that fell between numbers in the book. That dead tree mortgage book boots up every time, doesn't need its screen replaced if dropped, and never needs a replacement battery. There is a texture, a smell, even sounds from paper books you don't get from glowing screens that helps with remembering the content.
Hey Ryan, there is a weird parasocial relationship thing happening here and I know you don’t know me, but I feel genuinely proud of you. I have followed your work for a long time and your body of work on the stoics has gotten me through many challenges. Well done for taking the risk!
I know you have a small selection of books, but one thing I would take into account is the schools and universities around. What are their reading lists? If you can supply your community with that it could be nice as well. Maybe when they come searching for a book they surely need, they might find one they didn't know they needed. All the best, I hope you have a lot of success through your business.
What a great store. I was able to stop by on 7 July and you were kind enough to sign my books and let me say hello (I had a bike accident where I hit a deer!). Samantha was also super nice to me. Can't wait to come back to the store.
My wife and I have owned an independent bookstore since 1993. The nineties were amazing, but when the Amazon Effect kicked in, we nearly went under a couple of times. But we're still making a living. Your place looks great and so does the street you're on. Our street is doing a big block party thing end of this month, maybe stuff like that with your new neighbors would jumpstart things for all. Looks to me like you have a great start! Best of luck to you. Marcus on.
Prison librarian for over 20 years. We tried very hard to stock our library with books that had the ability to change our customers life for the better. From financial to exercise to self development. I’m retired now touring Europe in our motorhome. If I was still in my library for sure there would be a section full of your books. Thank you so much for what you have given. 🙌🙌🙌
I've always wanted to do something nice when I save a lot of money, like open a charity or start a non-profit. Never did it occur to me that the best thing I could do is give the most important thing... knowledge. From now on, I will definitely plan on opening a book store!
3 months after having a "crazy idea" and acting on it, and this week I had a lot of self-doubt. This video came in perfect time. All the best to you Ryan.

Ryan, this is such a brave thing to do. You can't imagine how inspiring it is to watch this video. You and Sam's spirit shines through in this video. I live in Canada but I will visit this bookstore on my next U.S. road trip. Hoping you all the success that you two imagined.
Always wondered how Ryan had such a stunning place to make videos from, now I know! Deserves massive congrats for his achievement, both him and his wife.
I've only recently discovered and started listening to Ryan and to me, he's no less important than the great philosophers of the past. Keep in mind a lot of his ideas are materials taken from already established ideas but any great ideas are worth passing along; one generation to another. The common thread with great minds of past and present have always been the sharing and passing along ideas. The saying, if you don't learn from history, you're doomed to repeat it. Like in life, we make mistakes but it's what we do with that experience that matters. Learn from our mistakes; learn from our great philosophers; Ryan is passing along those ideas in a well-curated, condensed format.
Love your books Ryan, I've been a big fan for a long time. I was born and raised in Dallas, I think you're a doing a perfect thing. The next time I'm in Texas, I will be visiting your Painted Porch. Hope you'll be there!
I absolutely love your bookstore! I am grateful for your courage, your creativity, and the beauty you are sharing with this community, at home and abroad. The building's history, its architecture, is meant to cradle, house, and nurture our humanity. So many great ideas rooted here, a different way of fusing the best of our past, present, and future. Your dream is inclusive, illuminating, and delightful...a place to play, to discover, and to make friends, adventures, and a life to love. God bless.
Love to see this! We made the same leap earlier this year and opened our own bookshop (The Bibliophile) in small town Dover, OH. We also had some inspiration from The Last Bookshop -- such neat book decor! I love your idea of only carrying a limited number of books. I wish you great success!
So happy for you and your family. I am opening a small men’s retail gift store. What an amazing experience. Glad you shared this video. I’m carrying a small selection of books… including Daily Stoic!

I’m disabled and live in Delaware. I was a fricking stud before I got hurt. I’m on my 3rd book of yours and if the store wasn’t in Texas I’d come in and work for free every day. I’m saving Ego for the last book bro. I’m also gonna snag one of your courses once I get moved into my new place. Just got a divorce after 26 years…30 years with a fair weathered wife. Thank your for your hard work.
I am in love with your new bookstore. I think the concept of the book fireplace is so unique and creative. You did an amazing job. I wish you, your wife, and your children amazing success with this concept and with The Daily Stoic. GOOD LUCK!
That’s so brave! Who doesn’t dream of having a bookstore!? And I love your aesthetic. You two are such an inspiration. Thanks for sharing. Got me thinking!
An incredible story! Really loved this inside look into how it all came to be. I appreciate the hand written note cards describing some of the books, very nice detail. I hope to visit one day. Congrats Ryan and Samantha!
Bravo to you two, there is never a bad time to open a bookstore. I have worked in book retail off and on for over 30 years here in New York. I have seen bookstores close and new ones open and I believe that there will always be a place for physical books in the life of Humankind; forge on.

I just want that Much Dedication in My Life..i wrote one story book...and that was badly Failed commercially...i quitted writing..but after watching Ryan I'm getting the writing Vibe in My Life again...
Hey Ryan - thanks man and great to learn about this. I’ve been listening to your books from the start of the pandemic (I own a travel business!) so you’ve really helped me get through days, weeks and months of things going badly. I’m only 3 minutes into your video so don’t know what’s coming up - but good luck with everything - hope it’s going to work out. Decision after decision! “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing”!
What a wonderful and brave thing to do. I am so impressed with your beautiful store and the fact that you did this amazing project together as a couple and now you are reaping the rewards! What an awesome story!
What a great store. If you are ever in the Netherlands visit the Dominicaner bookstore in Maastricht. It is situated in a medieval church. Stunning. Good luck!
would love to visit this book store one day! I was a philosophy major, so to me there is nothing better than a great, deep, book, and having a physical copy is a very special bonus. congratulations, looks like a total dream come true!
It's amazing, congratulations, thank you for sharing and hopefully one day i will get one of your books from your store 🤞 And... It was nice to 'meet' your wife 😉 Warm wishes and regards from Ireland ☘️Maja

I loved hearing about the journey of The Painted Porch. Thank you for sharing it.

What a great store. If you are ever in the Netherlands visit the Dominicaner bookstore in Maastricht. It is situated in a medieval church. Stunning. Good luck!
