  • Today I’m planting my new bare root apple tree in a large pot. The variety is Granny Smith, you can use this same process for potting up any fruit tree.

Thats really usefull, thanks. I'd bought 9 fruit trees at local supermarkets this year and had planted them in 40 litre pots, nice to know that it was ok.

A tree, bush that is small getting it healthy in a pot that can be moved to the shade in the heat of summer garage in the worst of winter keeps it from getting killed till you think it has the heath in the spring. I lie in an area where you can have a month in summer with little water and temperatures over 40C and winter temps below -20C, you have a weak tree sitting out in that and find at best is set back to near death or outright dead in the spring. You get the big trees it is different, I even got a maple on sale late in summer, left it in its pot, sheltered it through the worst winter weather, and put it in the ground in spring after the leaves were out, some springs can be wet with saturated soil so I would avoid that disaster if it happened.

Good tips mate, thanks. Bit different here in the UK, we’re lucky if it goes above 30c for a few days in the summer and we might get a day or two at -8c in the winter. I’ll protect in the greenhouse if needed but usually they’re fine outside from day one.
