  • Hello internet! I finally got my hands on another .Strandberg* guitar...this time a Prog 6 in a natural finish!
    As anyone knows who watched my other reviews, I'm a big fan of Strandberg guitars. They offer premium features and cutting edge ergonomics at a very competitive price point. The Prog 6 delivers in all categories: playability, tone, and price.
    Featuring stainless steel frets, Strandberg's own proprietary multi-scale tremolo, the amazing endurneck and absolutely amazing sounding Suhr pickups...this guitar has tone to die for.
    The only issues I had during my test is extremely sharp fret edges that I've run across in two of the four Indonesian built Strandberg's I've played. I don't know if it's a problem with the humidity of the climate where the guitars are built and then getting the nastiest fret sprout of all time or if there's a problem in the workmanship from the factory. It's the only negative of the guitar, but it's something to keep in mind when ordering your guitar.

    Awesome review man! One thing to note, you can adjust the strandy bridge to flutter just like a Floyd. There are two separate fulcrum points on each bushing inside the bridge plate, one gives you a really “loose” and light feeling trem, the other makes it very tight and stiff (perfect for flutters). It’s a great feature and a really cool design. Strandberg himself has a video about this somewhere on the web.

      Hey! Thanks for stopping back and checking out my newest review, your support really means a lot!
      Thanks, you're def right I should have mentioned the multiple tremolo points in my review. IMO I still find them to not flutter as well as other brands even on the setting that's better for flutters compared to something like my Lo Pro Edge 7 on my J Custom Ibby. I also recently tested an Angel Vivaldi Charvel that was hands down the best fluttering guitar of all time I've ever played...but the damn thing wouldn't stay in tune. That video will be out in about a month or so, still got two more guitar reviews on the way as well as my new EP on May 16th. Would love to hear your thoughts on those tunes, rock on man!

    Great review! Thanks for doing a bunch of these strandberg videos. I just went to guitar center to order this and I originally wanted the Original for the fixed bridge but they accidentally ordered the prog with tremolo. I was planning on tuning this to D standard and am planning on going to drop C once in awhile. Do you think I should push for the original or will the prog handle going to drop C and back to D standard without having to do a set up?

      Sounds like the tuning changes might be a bit difficult on a trem equipped guitar. You'd def have to do claw/spring tension adjustments obviously when trying to change between those tunings but I'd expect that to be it. I don't think you'd need to do any truss rod adjustments when changing, I haven't needed to when changing the tunings on my berg's. Good luck and hope that helps!

    I think that was my most favorite demo you've done so far. If that's a peek preview of what your solo album is going to be like, I need to remember to get my hands on it. As for the fret ends, I think it may be fret sprout. I'm on my 4th Strandberg and I've yet to find anything wrong with the frets. I am in Florida where it's very humid, so maybe that's what has helped me out. My only issue with Strandberg at this point is the lack of a neck-through 7 and 8 string, so much to the point where instead of getting a 5th Strandberg, I bit the bullet and put an order in for an Aristides H/08.

      Thanks for stopping back and checking out the demo and review! The new EP is a lot like these so I think you'll really like it, it'll be out May 16th!
      That's interesting you haven't ran into fret sprout down in Florida, you might be onto something! Hopefully they'll be coming out with neck through models very soon for 7 string models! I'd love to hear about the Aristides once you get it, they've been on my list of a brand I'd love to check out, but they're hard to come by (and I get all my guitars to test through Musicians Friend right now because of their point system and they don't have any lol).
      Best of luck with the new guitar, be sure to drop me a line and let me know when you get it, I'd love to hear it in action.

      @@aminorerror oh! I almost forgot! You mentioned not liking the standard bag. I completely agree, I don't like it either. I felt like it was TOO snug for my Original 8. I wound up buying a Basiner Brisq, and it definitely has more padding. Basiner makes the strap for Strandberg, so if you're interested in using a different brand of bag, that's one I'd definitely recommend checking out.

    The biggest drawback - for me (and I own a Strandberg) - is that, unlike on a regular guitar, you can't tune the guitar while plucking the string, unless you pluck with your left hand, which is not the same for me.

    My Prog 7 is perfect, MIK seems to have less lemons than the Indonesian stuff. Slightly high 0 fret but apparently that's somewhat common due to companies leaving it high to compensate for the wear it inevitably endures over time. I can level that if I want to.
    But I think the gig bag actually highlights the real problem with Strandberg: They give off that high end, lifestyle type of vibe and certainly charge accordingly. But the bag won't really protect much and actually the zippers fall apart pretty much right away. And we're left with sharp frets on the entire board from a factory that makes guitars for other companies with way better fit finish/QC? Hate to think that Ola really just wants to keep margins high, it's so cynical and depressing to imagine that he knows the bags suck and that the QC is a joke but won't let go of the $$$ to address the issues.
    Super tight playing btw!

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate you stopping back and checkout my newest video!
      I'm not as cynical as you, I think what's happened is Ola is busy living his life and he's just less hands on these days. He's probably delegated those fine details to other people he unfortunately trusts while he R&D's new ideas and ways to improve the guitars. He seemed to be the kind of problem solving builder who seemed to get the most enjoyment out of that aspect, IMO that's what it seems.
      The gig bag is a total joke though, they really need to upgrade those. Kiesel's gig bag is exactly the kind of case that should come with any guitar that costs around 2k on up!

    • @Theability83

      Your last paragraph has been exactly what I’ve wanted to say after my recent experience with the brand. I’ve only owned 2 strandbergs a 2018 prog 6 and a 2020 prog 7. My prog 6 is on par with my kiesel guitars as far as fretwork, finish and fit, but the 2020 prog 7 had one of the worst ebony boards I’ve seen (extremely dried out and cracked from 13th fret to the end of the fretboard by the neck pup) and a 2mm gap at the 9th fret end bass side, it’s not fret sprout it was an unseated fret. Had a QC date from strandberg of 2/4/21 and I received it first week of April with these issues right out the box. It was a refurb direct from strandberg also... so I expected some cosmetic damage but definitely didn’t expect what I got. Sent that one back. Who knows what the issues are with their current production models but from what I’ve seen the more recent 2020 models have been the ones with the real hit or miss QC.

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words!
      The body on the Boden is made of swamp ash, only the top is made from Maple. There's a very thin layer of finish applied on the guitars, it isn't raw unfinished wood so there's not much extra cleaning required than from any other guitar finish. It doesn't get as dirty as a high gloss finish and it tends to not leave any finger prints or smudges on it. All guitars will age differently depends on the environment you keep them in, and if you gig a lot, but on my older Boden OS original it hasn't changed color. It looks pretty much new. Hope that helps!

      @aminorerror  3 роки тому

      Yep, flaps are down!
      That's really the point of my complaint: it really should have FAR more padding to correctly protect a 2-3k instrument. The Kiesel gig bag wins hands down, so much more padding it's practically on the level of a Mono gig bag. The Strandy case should be better. Thanks for watching though, I appreciate the comment!

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Steve, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! It is a steep price increase but the neck through design does make playing lines up higher much easier. The tone will be slightly less snappy and bright though, so there will be a slight trade off. I really LOVED the fusion neck through I tested, but haven't been able to play a prog neck through yet unfortunately. The neck through models are now equipped with Strandberg own branded pickups (I'm pretty sure at least, double check that before you buy) and I don't know how good those pickups are compared to the Suhr pickups on the bolt on models. The Suhr pickups were pretty much perfect.
      Hope that helps dude, there's a bit of a trade I think but the access to the upper frets is unparalleled. I just WISH they'd come out with a Prog 6 neck through with a great set of passive pickups. That would be my personal build I'd prefer. Thanks again for the comment and best of luck!

      All the guitars I've got have come through Musicians Friend....and I would highly recommend against MF for guitars. They don't do any QC before sending them out the door, and have poorly packaged quite a few as well. I've only stuck with MF because they've got an aggressive points rewards system and that helps me make sure I don't loose money when sourcing guitars for review. I bought my Quad Cortex through Sweetwater recently and they seem to actually give a shit so I'd expect your experience to be better but still be on the lookout for bad fretwork. How does the down tuning work with the tremolo? Is it as time taking as with a floating floyd rose?

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  2 роки тому

      Yea it works exactly the same as any full floating system, you'll have to take the time to adjust the springs to keep the correct tension on the bridge. If you're planning on doing a lot of tuning changes going with a fixed bridge is probably the way to go, or ideally have multiple guitars in different tunings. It also won't be a prog model as they're all tremolo guitars, but they have great fixed bridge models in the lineup. Best of luck.

    Great review and demo. I couldn’t agree more with you on the fret end issues since you know my experience. Also I 100% agree their gig bag is pretty pathetic compared to the kiesel one. I took my Vader across the country in 2019 and it fell out of the back of our van, a fall of a good 5 feet landing on the top/headstock side of the case. My Vader didn’t even get knocked out of tune. I appreciate your honest opinions on these issues as not everyone who owns a strandberg is willing to admit that the QC is hit or miss with them currently. Like I said yesterday the design is amazing and really reinvented the guitar but the execution of it seems to be really hit or miss with their more recent couple yrs of production models.

      It kills me to admit it as I'm a bit of a Strandy fan boy at the moment...but the QC is clearly off lately. It's interesting that I've talked to a few people now too that the Korean made ones seemed to of been more consistent and that's a total shame.
      Damn glad your Kiesel survived that drop! The gig bags are legit, I gigged with mine too and never had an issue. Sucks you've gotta drop an extra $150-ish bucks to get something that's closer, and even then the deluxe gig bag doesn't have enough padding on the bottom and the strap pin on the rear heal can bottom out hard.

      That's so cool you play trumpet too! Horn is without a doubt my LEAST favorite instrument I play that I'm average at lol It's so damn hard to be consistent on compared to something like keys or bass!
      For my horn students we spend a lot of time working out of the Arban's book, and specifically working on slurs. You can even come up with your own quick things to practice if you don't have that book (or one similar). Just take arpeggios in like the key of C and work on slurring from on note to the next, like C, E, G, E, C. Then do D minor: D, F, A, F, D ect Once you're feeling stronger too add the top octave or beyond and see how high you can go accurately. That'll really get your embrasure back in shape!

    about the headless headstocks issue: different people have different preferences but even so, the prevailing trends almost always eventually change with the passage of time. humans sometimes get bored with the same thing over and over, and then have an appetite for novel experiences. plus, there's money to be made. otherwise we'd all be going around wearing buffalo fur loin cloths.
    in the mid 1980's Levi's presented an alternate version of trouser shorts that came down to mid-knee cap. at first they looked odd because they were. suppose the NBA suddenly now went back to short-shorts? it'd look like fellows were cavorting about in their skivvies. 'headless' will eventually become just as common as manscaping has.

      It really is embarrassing and such a freaking shame, this guitar really did check every other box. It could also be a bit of an indictment of Musicians Friend as well, I get all my guitars from them (they have an absolutely reckless points system lol) and they DEF doesn't do any QC before sending out a guitar. So maybe a combo of the two companies?

    Hey, nice Demo! About the sharp frets - I just had that on a custom shop guitar with my favorite guitar builder who lives like 100km away. He had the wood stored for over 5 years and he is a master at his craft. Nonetheless, after 1-2 Month, the frets got incredibly sharp. It has to do with different humidyties and strandberg can not do shit about it. BUT: Every decent guitar luthier can get rid of it for about 20-40 bucks. Strandberd should take that bill though, with no question - and I think they probably would!
    Anyway, with the new strandberg guitars using richlite this should not be a problem - the material is not sensitive to humidity

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words and thanks for the comment!
      I'm inclined to agree with you...BUT I've got a few other brands in for review currently that are made in Indonesia (specifically an EVH Wolfgang Standard) and the fret work is perfectly fine. On top of that, the EVH is like a $1,000 guitar compared to the Boden Prog's $2200 price tag...ouch!
      You're probably right, its just the humidity but the Classic and Fusion's I've reviewed were also Indo builds and their fretwork was perfect...so the inconsistency is def a bit confusing and partly why I'm wondering if it really is just a humidity issue. Idk, but thanks for the feedback!

    I found that squire strat tremolos stay in tune better than strandberg tremolos. The tremolo design renders these otherwise awesome guitars unplayable imo.

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting, unfortunately I strongly disagree. First it's a bit apples to oranges of a comparison, the 'berg is fully floating and more complicated than the strat system that usually rest on the body of the guitar. Second, there's no comparison between Squire strat hardware and Strandy hardware...the Strandy wins all day long. Squire hardware is budget hardware and not of very good quality and the Strandy stuff is professional quality gear. Granted, the 'berg isn't a double locking system so it's not as solid as something like a Ibanez or high end Floyd Rose (the Ibby is IMO because of the locking posts). If you were having tuning stability issues on a 'berg that's due to user error and not the instrument. Some tips when using a floating bridge is to really stretch the strings out, use the same gauge strings when doing string changes and to keep in mind anything you do to one side will greatly impact the other end of the bridge (ie tighten the sixth string loosens the tension on the 1st). Hope that helps!

    • @travissimpson7829
      @travissimpson7829 11 місяців тому

      @@aminorerror the strat was floating too. The strany I tried was brand new. Setup from Sweetwater. The strat had lubricant on all friction points. I'm telling you, it was definitely unplayable if you like to bend a whole step, and whammy a whole step in either direction. Sweetwater told me it was a design flaw and they've gotten several complaints about that. Maybe it's a qc issue and you got a good one, but I'm definitely not the only person noticing this. I'm pretty sure it's because the string would lift off the saddles completely when depressing the bar and not return to the same position when released, even though the bridge was parallel to the body and the action was less than 2mm

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  11 місяців тому

      I've reviewed many Strandberg's and have come across QC issues but never to do with tuning stability with a tremolo. I straight up don't believe you that Sweetwater said that, and again Strat tremolo's are not fully floating systems that's just straight wrong.

    • @travissimpson7829
      @travissimpson7829 11 місяців тому

      @@aminorerror I'm sorry but you are actually wrong. Fender sets up their trems floating from the factory most of the time. Floating simply means being able to raise or lower the pitch. Ever heard of Jeff beck? That's a classic example of a floating strat trem. Might want to do some research

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  11 місяців тому

      Oh shit, Jeff who? Never heard of him...was he in the Beatles or something? That's why I keep saying a FULLY floating system. That's the difference, and to say a Squire Strat has a better trem than a berg is laughable.
