Hey, I'm the developer of the AppleIISd and was surprised and amazed to see it featured in this video! Yes, at the moment it only supports 65C02 CPUs, but I started a version for 6502 a while ago. Unfortunately, it does not work yet but hopefully, I will be able to get it working this winter season (and a couple of other issues). I will keep you posted. Regards from Germany!
This looks wonderful! And i think I will be springing for one soon. What I am hoping for is this can be used simultaneously with another floppy drove? either physical or emulated? I currently use a floppy emu on my (clone) Apco//E enhenced and its a great product, but I am unable to take advantage of its smartport features because I don't have the required controller, I was going to spring for the cost of one of those "liron" cards, but found out before hand that the Floppemu can only emulate one image at a time. Either a hd image or a floppy image, not both simultaneously. A sad limitation but can understand why its there. This seems like a great solution if it works for me.
@@wishusknight3009 Sure, this works in combination with other controllers and you can even have multiple AppleIISd cards as well. I always use it with a normal Disk II controller in my IIe and with both controllers enabled in my IIgs.

UA-cam now supports timstamped sections, and Adrian does add the timestamps for the sections, so if you are not interested in a secton (candy tasting, stuffed toys), then you can skip over that section, no problem. But yeah, if these videos start to become an hour long "tasting candies of the world" video then you would have a point, but we've hardly got to that stage yet. Quite often, when people send stuff, they may have extra room in the package, or a weight limit that they haven't reached, so they can add a few sweets without paying extra for the postage, and Adrian seems to enjoy them, so it's win-win in that respect.
The Fox on the candy labeled Pihlaja (Pihlaja=rowan) refers to a Finnish version of "Sour grapes" from the "Fox and the Grapes" fable (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fox_and_the_Grapes). The literal translation by google is "Bitter, said a Fox about rowanberries".
I looked up some info on the Apple Card, which emulates a ProFile hard disk, and found this: The AppleIISd requires an enhanced IIe or IIgs computer. The ROM code uses some 65c02 opcodes and will therefore not work on a II, II+ or unenhanced IIe. It also works with ProDOS and GS/OS. I suspect the ideal machine to pair it with would be an Apple //GS.
Adrian I always love how you go the extra mile in all of your video's. Pulling out and setting up a C64 to show us that program for example. I don't think that was a trivial amount of time setting all of that up. Keep up the great work. Your efforts are appreciated.
Someone might have already said this but the cardboard in the mail from Barbara is important too. Put the cardboard in the plastic sleeve, then put the magazine in the sleeve in front of it; fold the plastic flap on top over the magazine and cardboard, slipping it behind the cardboard to close. This is how you keep magazines and comics in good shape - the cardboard piece prevents it from folding!
Wow, this episode solves a mystery from some ~35 years ago. I owned the German MAD-issue with roughly the same content and I never got around to type in the listing (i.e. too lazy ;-)) so thanks for showing/sharing the program !
I always get warm fuzzies whenever someone mentions 2MG, since that's the format I originally developed for XGS way back in 1996 or so. :) Anyway you should be able to just strip off the first 64 bytes of a 2MG and get a PO file out of it; on Linux just use "dd if=file.2mg of=file.po bs=64 skip=1"
Hi Adrian, The MAD program trick with the different headers for the same data reminded me of something from the 80's from a radio program in the Netherlands ("Hobbyscoop") called BASICODE. It was a trick to write one basic program for most home computers out there. Your program had to start at line 1000 and only use standard basic. Below 1000 were all the machine specific commands as subroutines. So, for instance, line 100 would say 100 HOME : RETURN on an Apple ][ and 100 ?"🤍" : RETURN on a VIC-20 or C64. Then if you needed to clear the screen you would just GOSUB 100. On the radio they would say: "The program starts now." and then you would record the beeps and noise from the radio. Then you would pop the cassette in your data recorder and start a program that would decode that signal to the lines of 1000 and above. I have that issue of MAD from when I bought it back when I was a pre-teen. I believe the back cover is different, but the content seems identical. I'll dig it out to be sure. :)
'80s computers and Goonies in the same MAD issue? What could be better! And that's really cool that the magazine was from Walnut Grove, MN - it's a tiny town and I'm almost certain I know the antique store it came from. We went there while visiting several Little House on the Prairie towns quite a few years ago. The Ingalls actually lived there around 1874.
I'm guessing that the Commodore version of that MAD™ program was so slow because it had to perform all the math for the point-to-point drawing in BASIC. The other platforms had BASIC interpreters that included graphics commands where the math was done by the ML routines for those commands. A little work with Super Expander 64, or Simons' BASIC, or BASIC 7.0 on a 128 would probably speed things up quite a bit. Or send the original through a compiler like AustroSpeed88 so that you don't have to have a cartridge in your 64 to run it. I wrote a similar program way back in high school, to draw a face. MY face. But it wasn't plotted point-to-point like that. No, what I had done is to get a photo taken of me in very high relief, meaning lighting only on either side and not in front. The photo was taken on Kodalith film, which is very high contrast, so the image was quite stark. On top of _that,_ I deliberately under-exposed and over-developed the print, so that the contrast was increased even more. Then I took the print to a light table, and put some graph paper on top of it that I'd modified to conform to the shape of the block graphics cells on a TRS-80 Model III screen. Then I created DATA statements with the character values from the block graphics, and wrote a simple routine to just PRINT it all out.
The Apple version was quite slow as well because numbers were stored as character strings in Applesoft BASIC. My cousin and I used to tape several sheets of small cell graph paper together to make a grid that was 280 by 192 (the Apple II's high resolution). We would then draw out full screen images and write programs in machine language that plotted each pixel exactly. That was definitely the hard way of doing graphics.
I grew up typing in listings just like that one, from Family Computing, K-Power, and others. There was a modem program (ProTerm? PowerTerm?) that one of the Atari mags put out and I spent days typing it in, then tweaking the menus to learn how it worked. Great times back then!
Oooo, I clearly remember that MAD issue back in the day. As soon as I bought it I ran home and started punching the code in. =) Glorious memories. I now collect Swedish MAD and have all but one issue. Think I'll read this one mentioned just for kicks and nostalgia. Yes, the cover is/was the same in Sweden and I guess the code too. =)
I once typed page after page after page of data statements from a magazine for a C64 graphics extension only to get a CRC error (yes, the loader program offered that feature). At first I got my mother to read the lines from the magazine so I could verify on the screen, but when she started complaining, I wrote a little program that read me the numbers I had typed in through SAM/reciter, using the joystick fire button as a foot pedal to halt the reading if needed. In the end I found all the typos and was able to use the extension, which was pretty cool actually. Good days 😊

Today arrived my Amiga500 RAM expansion I ordered from ebay and it turned out the seller was Finnish. It read Suomi and I'm always surprised when I'm reminded that Finnland is called Suomi in their native language. I was really into playing C64 games on emulator around 2004 or listen to a lot of SID music on PC. I found that there was a game based on The Goonies and I wasn't aware of that when we had an actual Commodore 64. Usually I played games I knew as a kid but it was new to me as an adult and it's really fascinating! It's a different game compared to the NES or other versions, each screen is a puzzle, you have to control 2 characters and try to figure out how to advance to the next level. Really clever game with awesome music, gameplay and puzzles.
And now for the MAD section: I miss the tiny drawings Sergio Aragones drew in the margins! Also, for the program: the Apple version may not work properly because they use different vars with the same first two chars. Methinks they at MAD forgot to test some of these... They were right to take a pot shot at CBM (and, by relation, Applesoft) BASIC, as it was indeed slow. I've written programs in machine language that are literally 1000 times faster than the BASIC equivalent. One puts a random value onto the screen and chooses a random value for that location's color RAM. It does this for all 1000 locations on the C64 screen, then changes the border color and loops back. In the time it takes BASIC to put one char onscreen, the machine language version has done an entire screen (using SID as RNG).
Good catch with the variable names for the Apple version! I remember having problems with some of the earlier programs I wrote for the Apple II because I did not know of this limitation at first. Oddly enough though, this bug with variable naming does not seem to have an affect on this particular program. However, I have discovered a much more sinister bug with the Apple version that corrupts the memory where the program is stored. I have left another comment detailing this bug. One of the main reasons BASIC programs ran so darn slow on the Apple II (and I assume the same for Commodore) was that the numbers were stored as character strings. I once wrote a simple compiler for the Apple II that only understood the five hi-res instructions (HGR, HGR2, HCOLOR=, HPLOT, and TO). It also could only deal with integer literals, so it could only compile BASIC programs where all the coordinates were hard-coded. The main advantage of my compiler was that it converted the character string integers into binary. The machine language it produced simply called the ROM routines for the hi-res instructions, but with binary numbers. As a result, an image, that would take 20 seconds to draw in BASIC, would draw instantly in machine language. I also wrote a 3D maze program on the Apple II, first in BASIC so that I could more easily debug it. Afterwards, I manually converted it into machine language. The BASIC version took about 2.5 minutes to render a single frame. The machine language version rendered several frames a second. It is truly amazing how the creators of Applesoft BASIC crammed so much functionality into such a small amount of ROM, but I guess they traded speed for memory and thus reduced the cost of the machines.
I think a lot of us had a love/hate relationship with those type-in programs back in the day. About 50% of the time either YOU made a typing error and it took you FOREVER to find it, or THEY made the error and you had to wait until the next issue to get a correction. Really sucked when the magazine was bi-monthly!
In Astoria there is a fish-and-chips restaurant on the waterfront called Clemente's Seafood. It has delicious food. My Dad, his girl friend, and I ordered a lot of food. We didn't think we would finish it, but we devoured it all.
I spent over 3 hours typing in SpeedScript, a free word processor published by Compute! magazine. I accidentally hit something and lost the entire thing before I saved it to disk. After 5 minutes of throwing a fit I spent another 4 hours typing it in, stopping to save it every 15 minutes. That's when I learned about backing up and saving your work. The C64 was so simple but totally unforgiving. It was designed by people that assumed their users weren't idiots, unlike modern ones that assume you are an idiot.
Adrian, I have similar issues up-scaling my Commodore computers, figured it was more to do with the Chroma/Luma signals overriding the RCA signals going into the Upscaler. What I normally do is turn my Commodores on whilst the Upscaler is taking signals from another running RCA source...
at the end, behind you on the right, that looks like a SCSI external hard drive enclosure for Mac. Had one that I used for my use at School with our PowerMac 5500/300's.
I have found what appears to the the US edition of that issue of MAD Magazine: archive.org/details/mad-258/mode/2up and yes, the cover image is almost the same, i.e. there is no "alternate" front cover on the back side.
Overall the Sony ZV-1 looks great. The auto-focus' "product mode" I was reading about does a super job of zooming in when you hold something out. The only problem I saw was around 17:07 when you were doing some hand waving, and I think the auto-focus was freaking out about that; watch the corners of the screen during that segment. I was thinking about getting the ZV-1 myself as I'd really like the optical zoom and auto-focus for close-ups of things I'm showing, but since I'm 100% hand waving, I'm worried that'll be a problem.
Ah, Pihlaja.. old, old candy but kind of neat. I still buy them occasionally, they just have loads of sugar as the other ingredient is very tart berry. And of course, Turkish Pepper has been at the top 5 since.. since i was a kid.
I had that issue of MAD, but I don't recall there being a C64 loader for the graphics data. It was clear how the program worked by looking at the Apple/Atari/IBM listings but I never got around to writing a C64 version. My issue had a different cover too, I guess they added the C64 code in a reprint.
The older stuff on the MECC disk image are stored as DSK files (possibly with the front and back concatenated). There is a launcher, MECC.SYSTEM, which emulates DOS 3.3 for them. HDV and PO are the same format. 2MG is usually just PO with a header. Ciderpress should be able to do the conversion for you.
Just a tip: those Tyrkisk Peber candies are kind of hygroscopic, so pop on a clip or something to seal the bag, or they'll all melt together into one big gooey blob.
MAD - C64, seems to have an enhanced "What, Me Worry?", as it is held as a bitmap in the data statements on lines 1800-1870 (15 chars *8 bytes per char = 120 bytes) which is poked directly into screen ram on line 120. The other versions just print it using standard font.
I recall having that issue of MAD, though at the time I didn't have any of the qualifying computers - never quite managed to get it working on my VZ-200.

I don't know if it's actually meant to be hot...they're filled with ammonium chloride powder which is supposed to impart a salty flavor. But Tyrkisk Peber does mean "Turkish pepper" in Danish.
Check the links to this video -- there is a listing of the basic program that should allow you to mostly copy and paste it into GWBASIC in an emulator. :-)
23:52 The reason for this warning is because when lines 150 through 170 are executed, the contents of the last four text lines from the first text page buffer are copied to the second text page buffer. However, by default the BASIC program is stored in the same memory location as the second text page buffer. Thus, executing these lines will corrupt the program!!! (Also, since Applesoft BASIC only uses the first two characters of variable names, the variables "LOWBASE" and "LOC" are technically the same. However, the code still works in this particular instance.) Unfortunately, this program is so long that it runs over into the memory used by the first hi-res page, so it draws on the second hi-res page. To get the "WHAT, ME WORRY?" text to appear on the bottom of the screen, the second text page must be used. I guess one could consider a self-corrupting program to have a bug or a design flaw at the very least. Maybe the Apple version should have created the "WHAT, ME WORRY?" text as part of the graphics like the Commodore 64 version did. Back when this issue of MAD magazine came out, my cousin borrowed it from the library and his mother typed this program into their Apple ][+ computer. I remember seeing the image of Alfred E. Newman's head with a bunch of seemingly random lines drawn over it. After seeing that the program corrupts itself when executing, I thought that maybe this was causing the random lines, but the corruption occurs early enough that hardly any of the image would be drawn. Apparently my aunt had just mistyped some of the numbers in the data statements.
So funny how licorice, is so uniquely liked by this part of the world (Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland). And I mean the real stuff, not the super sweet things. I loooooooove it. :)
Here in Yankland people use licorice to mean a particular shape of candy, i.e. red vines or licorice vines are both just call red licorice or black licorice. So annoying. Don't they know it's a flavor?

No, what I had done is to get a photo taken of me in very high relief, meaning lighting only on either side and not in front. The photo was taken on Kodalith film, which is very high contrast, so the image was quite stark. On top of _that,_ I deliberately under-exposed and over-developed the print, so that the contrast was increased even more.
Then I took the print to a light table, and put some graph paper on top of it that I'd modified to conform to the shape of the block graphics cells on a TRS-80 Model III screen. Then I created DATA statements with the character values from the block graphics, and wrote a simple routine to just PRINT it all out.
The Apple version was quite slow as well because numbers were stored as character strings in Applesoft BASIC.
My cousin and I used to tape several sheets of small cell graph paper together to make a grid that was 280 by 192 (the Apple II's high resolution). We would then draw out full screen images and write programs in machine language that plotted each pixel exactly. That was definitely the hard way of doing graphics.

I grew up typing in listings just like that one, from Family Computing, K-Power, and others. There was a modem program (ProTerm? PowerTerm?) that one of the Atari mags put out and I spent days typing it in, then tweaking the menus to learn how it worked. Great times back then!

I once typed page after page after page of data statements from a magazine for a C64 graphics extension only to get a CRC error (yes, the loader program offered that feature). At first I got my mother to read the lines from the magazine so I could verify on the screen, but when she started complaining, I wrote a little program that read me the numbers I had typed in through SAM/reciter, using the joystick fire button as a foot pedal to halt the reading if needed. In the end I found all the typos and was able to use the extension, which was pretty cool actually. Good days 😊

Today arrived my Amiga500 RAM expansion I ordered from ebay and it turned out the seller was Finnish. It read Suomi and I'm always surprised when I'm reminded that Finnland is called Suomi in their native language.
I was really into playing C64 games on emulator around 2004 or listen to a lot of SID music on PC. I found that there was a game based on The Goonies and I wasn't aware of that when we had an actual Commodore 64. Usually I played games I knew as a kid but it was new to me as an adult and it's really fascinating! It's a different game compared to the NES or other versions, each screen is a puzzle, you have to control 2 characters and try to figure out how to advance to the next level. Really clever game with awesome music, gameplay and puzzles.

Also, for the program: the Apple version may not work properly because they use different vars with the same first two chars. Methinks they at MAD forgot to test some of these...
They were right to take a pot shot at CBM (and, by relation, Applesoft) BASIC, as it was indeed slow. I've written programs in machine language that are literally 1000 times faster than the BASIC equivalent. One puts a random value onto the screen and chooses a random value for that location's color RAM. It does this for all 1000 locations on the C64 screen, then changes the border color and loops back. In the time it takes BASIC to put one char onscreen, the machine language version has done an entire screen (using SID as RNG).
Good catch with the variable names for the Apple version! I remember having problems with some of the earlier programs I wrote for the Apple II because I did not know of this limitation at first. Oddly enough though, this bug with variable naming does not seem to have an affect on this particular program. However, I have discovered a much more sinister bug with the Apple version that corrupts the memory where the program is stored. I have left another comment detailing this bug.
One of the main reasons BASIC programs ran so darn slow on the Apple II (and I assume the same for Commodore) was that the numbers were stored as character strings. I once wrote a simple compiler for the Apple II that only understood the five hi-res instructions (HGR, HGR2, HCOLOR=, HPLOT, and TO). It also could only deal with integer literals, so it could only compile BASIC programs where all the coordinates were hard-coded. The main advantage of my compiler was that it converted the character string integers into binary. The machine language it produced simply called the ROM routines for the hi-res instructions, but with binary numbers. As a result, an image, that would take 20 seconds to draw in BASIC, would draw instantly in machine language.
I also wrote a 3D maze program on the Apple II, first in BASIC so that I could more easily debug it. Afterwards, I manually converted it into machine language. The BASIC version took about 2.5 minutes to render a single frame. The machine language version rendered several frames a second.
It is truly amazing how the creators of Applesoft BASIC crammed so much functionality into such a small amount of ROM, but I guess they traded speed for memory and thus reduced the cost of the machines.
Oh yes, I remember this issue! 'From Wang to NCR.' stuck with me. Yes, this was in the grade school library.

I think a lot of us had a love/hate relationship with those type-in programs back in the day. About 50% of the time either YOU made a typing error and it took you FOREVER to find it, or THEY made the error and you had to wait until the next issue to get a correction. Really sucked when the magazine was bi-monthly!

I spent over 3 hours typing in SpeedScript, a free word processor published by Compute! magazine. I accidentally hit something and lost the entire thing before I saved it to disk. After 5 minutes of throwing a fit I spent another 4 hours typing it in, stopping to save it every 15 minutes. That's when I learned about backing up and saving your work. The C64 was so simple but totally unforgiving. It was designed by people that assumed their users weren't idiots, unlike modern ones that assume you are an idiot.
Omg. I also wasted over a week typing in that program in the 80's never got it working. Mystery solved. Thanks Australian Mad magazine.
Adrian, I have similar issues up-scaling my Commodore computers, figured it was more to do with the Chroma/Luma signals overriding the RCA signals going into the Upscaler. What I normally do is turn my Commodores on whilst the Upscaler is taking signals from another running RCA source...

Overall the Sony ZV-1 looks great. The auto-focus' "product mode" I was reading about does a super job of zooming in when you hold something out. The only problem I saw was around 17:07 when you were doing some hand waving, and I think the auto-focus was freaking out about that; watch the corners of the screen during that segment. I was thinking about getting the ZV-1 myself as I'd really like the optical zoom and auto-focus for close-ups of things I'm showing, but since I'm 100% hand waving, I'm worried that'll be a problem.

Ah, Pihlaja.. old, old candy but kind of neat. I still buy them occasionally, they just have loads of sugar as the other ingredient is very tart berry. And of course, Turkish Pepper has been at the top 5 since.. since i was a kid.
I had that issue of MAD, but I don't recall there being a C64 loader for the graphics data. It was clear how the program worked by looking at the Apple/Atari/IBM listings but I never got around to writing a C64 version. My issue had a different cover too, I guess they added the C64 code in a reprint.
Finland is one of the few countries that I have been to. It was very beautiful and Helsinki is an amazing city.

The older stuff on the MECC disk image are stored as DSK files (possibly with the front and back concatenated). There is a launcher, MECC.SYSTEM, which emulates DOS 3.3 for them.
HDV and PO are the same format. 2MG is usually just PO with a header. Ciderpress should be able to do the conversion for you.
Yeah thanks, I actually got 2mg files working by just hex editing and removing the 64 byte header, then they worked too. (Like Total Replay)

Just a tip: those Tyrkisk Peber candies are kind of hygroscopic, so pop on a clip or something to seal the bag, or they'll all melt together into one big gooey blob.
MAD - C64, seems to have an enhanced "What, Me Worry?", as it is held as a bitmap in the data statements on lines 1800-1870 (15 chars *8 bytes per char = 120 bytes) which is poked directly into screen ram on line 120. The other versions just print it using standard font.

23:52 The reason for this warning is because when lines 150 through 170 are executed, the contents of the last four text lines from the first text page buffer are copied to the second text page buffer. However, by default the BASIC program is stored in the same memory location as the second text page buffer. Thus, executing these lines will corrupt the program!!! (Also, since Applesoft BASIC only uses the first two characters of variable names, the variables "LOWBASE" and "LOC" are technically the same. However, the code still works in this particular instance.)
Unfortunately, this program is so long that it runs over into the memory used by the first hi-res page, so it draws on the second hi-res page. To get the "WHAT, ME WORRY?" text to appear on the bottom of the screen, the second text page must be used. I guess one could consider a self-corrupting program to have a bug or a design flaw at the very least. Maybe the Apple version should have created the "WHAT, ME WORRY?" text as part of the graphics like the Commodore 64 version did.
Back when this issue of MAD magazine came out, my cousin borrowed it from the library and his mother typed this program into their Apple ][+ computer. I remember seeing the image of Alfred E. Newman's head with a bunch of seemingly random lines drawn over it. After seeing that the program corrupts itself when executing, I thought that maybe this was causing the random lines, but the corruption occurs early enough that hardly any of the image would be drawn. Apparently my aunt had just mistyped some of the numbers in the data statements.
