  • This is a bit of a review on my go-to lead mouthpiece. It has a really nice, clear sound up high. Lots of core and resonance. The cup is moderately shallow and the rim is moderately wide. Ideally I'd prefer it to have a larger throat, but it is a very nice mouthpiece nonetheless.

Hi Samuel, I recently purchased a Denis Wick 5182 American Classic 3C mouthpiece (16.75 cup width). Until now I have used a Schilke 14 on my Carolbrass Dutch Jazz Standard. I immediately noticed an improvement in the high register but I prefer the warm sound of my Schilke 14 (cup width 17.02) although, obviously, I find it more difficult to play the notes of the high register. The nice thing for me would be to get the warm and rich sound of the Schilke 14 and the ease of getting notes above the staff. Can you recommend something?
Denis Wick 5182 3C is not a true 3C since it has a wider and deeper cup than the 3C Bach. I prefer 1 and 1/2 C mouthpieces with a medium deep cup. So it seemed like a good solution to have an easier mouthpiece in the high register. But I see that the sound is very different from my Schilke 14. I don't know if this is due to the width of the cup (16.75 vs 17.02) or other factors, for example the Denis Wick V-type backbore.

Unfortunately there is always going to be a trade off between ease of playing and the sound produced. I personally go with what gives me the warmest, roundest sound and then work on my technique from there, because for me working on tone quality sometimes feels like a dead end, whereas I can develop the facility to play on most any of the mouthpieces I own that are even close to my main piece. Of course, my Jet Tone might be a different story. Honestly, if you like the sound of the Schilke, I'd strongly recommend sticking with that. We tend to over analyze our mouthpieces, frankly.

43.5 rim might suit you better. Its closer to 1 ½ feel. Think it screws on 43 sized underparts.
Reeves C cups = #26 throat, the slightly shallower M = #27, and deeper B Cup is #24 and the most suited to orchestral type playing.

Funny you should mention that, AJ. I am currently awaiting delivery on a used 43.5ES that I got a very good deal on. In the several years since posting this video, I have firmly moved on to 17.0+ mm diameters, and while I still love deeper (Bach A-B) cups for classical, I’ve developed a liking for extremely shallow lead pieces like the 1E. Any idea what sort of a throat the Reeves ES cup comes stock with? Thanks for the info!

Hiya, Reeves S, SV and ES have a #28 throat. I like the S cup for lead, one of the best commercial mouthpieces ever made imho. All the best.

May I ask which Bach and Warburton it corresponds to?

I have no idea about Warburton unfortunately, and frankly this mouthpiece doesn’t translate very well in Bach terms. I think the rim is a similar shape to a 3C, but the inner diameter more similar to a 2C. The cup is probably between a C and a D, but maybe slightly more V-shaped.

So you wouldnt use this for all around play, such as all region auditions?

If you're usually a 3C player, this is a great mouthpiece for all-around playing. My main mouthpiece is a 1-1/2A, which is larger and deeper, so I only use this mouthpiece for lead work or mariachi, because it brightens my sound. If you're good with slightly shallower cups this is an excellent choice to get a lot of core and richness in your sound.

Very nice review! Do you think a Bach 3D would be good for lead and piccolo trumpet? My go-to piece is a Vincent Bach 3C.

Here's the thing; on one hand, yes. On the other, I prefer cornet mouthpieces over trumpet mouthpieces on picc. Trumpet mouthpieces certainly work, but it's not really my preference.

I remember my instructor brought is Schilke P5-4 for me to doodle on, and he gave me a Bach 3C cornet mouthpiece, since his took cornet pipes. And I was able to play a high C with the bright piccolo sound. When I took an applied music class (basically private lessons), my applied music instructor had his Yamaha piccolo that took trumpet pipes, and I personally liked the feel of a trumpet mouthpiece better on a piccolo. Then again, everyone's different!

If the trumpet mouthpiece works better for you, that's totally fine! I just prefer a cornet mouthpiece because it helps me to correct some intonation issues caused by the large shank.

imo the c cup isnt shallow enough to really get that cutting edge up high for lead. if you really want that kinda sound up high i suggest getting the 43ES instead since its a lot shallower and will give you a brighter sound. just a personal preference of mine. some people do tend to bottom out on shallower cups though, so its not for everyone.

The 43C is a little bit shallower than mainstream C cups (it's more like a Bach D or Schilke B cup), which is plenty shallow enough for me. I do most of my playing on a Bach 1-1/2A, which is quite a lot deeper, and I really don't like playing on excessively shallow mouthpieces. That said, if the ES cup depth works for you, go for it! You do you and I do me!

Four years later-awaiting delivery of a 43.5ES! In the past couple years, as my overall chop technique has improved but the high notes have gotten more tiresome due to practice, I’ve developed a liking for much shallower lead cups. We’ll see…
