I started trucking at 28 yrs old and I’m now 35 yr old. I went from flat broke where I was looking at being homeless for the 2nd time in my adult life to 2 Rental property’s and 140k in the stock market. Current net worth is 205k. I work a lot and make a point of saving and investing 50k per year out of my 90k per year income. I have my own plan. I’m working towards 1.5 million assets that will pay me 100k gross in income from dividends rental income. I’m planning on retiring by 50 and living in south east Asia. Either-way I’m going to retire at 50.
No matter the industry or profession you will have losers and winners. Difference is the winners figure out how to win and the losers accept failure and complain.
I always stressed what your saying. Alot of folks misinterpret it, or maybe im not putting it out right. Yet trucking can put you anywhere you wanna be. Either scaling in the industry, or using trucking to put you into something you wanna do. I been in the industry for 7 to 8 years. Went from company to owning equipment. I literally lived in that truck for 5 years. The last 2 to 3 years, I made it up in my mind to get into something im more into which is being in the car industry. Trucking put me in a position to save close to $85k, I brought a piece of property, then used the majority to start my first business (detail business), I was still driving while that was starting up. Long story short, I completely got the drivers seat. I now have a few shops in different services in the automotive field. I just invested into mobile homes, I rent out small trailers, flips car etc etc etc. Yeah, I got all that going now, yet it took those 7 years in the industry to get my ish together. Alot of knowledge was gained by what you said. I kept listening about business, and the field I wanted to be here. While living in the truck most of my driving career, it put me in a position where I had no bills. I messed up alot of the money I made in trucking yet those last few years. I stacked up quick, and made my move. I feel the ones that hate trucking, is the ones just staying in one position. Be there and stay there. At that point its dead end.
I know a guy who graduated trucking school 3 months after I did in 2002. Drove straight to Penske and leased a truck and 53' trailer. Drove the wheels off it for 7 months. Fast forward to today, he's a small business owner with 60 trucks and trailers. Full office staff. The whole works....oh and a multi-millionaire. In life you get out of it what you put into it.
Exactly that's my plan , trucking is not a forever carrier is a stepping stone like you said . we sacrifice our time for the money , we need to use wisely
If you want to make decent money in trucking, have a skill to offer instead of just swinging doors every few days. Go into specialized freight like hazmat tanker, flatbed, heavy hauling or car hauling
Truck driving used to pay, but it's just not the same as it was twenty years ago. I can't pay my mortgage running3,000 miles a week for.65 a mile and after 23 years in this industry, the only interview that I can get is at wafflehouse.
You should look for a percentage pay job and perhaps specialize like tanker or flat bed. If you only want to can then why not go try to hired on to one of the better paying van company’s like for example, Walmart, UPS, or even Dominos. I’ve heard they all pay 6 figures.

Tried the O/O thing in 1989 when economy was slow in LTL. 10 mos, I realized I couldn’t make money. Btw, 4 million miles safely. Trucking is not only a trade but it’s a career! After 20yrs of truck driving its just a job. I also fly in the airline industry as a reserve FO. As soon as I gain more senority i'm giving up trucking. The money difference between the two is not even close. Trucking is just a side paycheck and nothing more.
Drive Uber and Lyft if you’re near a good sized city. Put 70 hours in like you do in trucking. You’ll come out ahead even replacing a car every 2 years. And you won’t have to live in a truck.
That ain't what it used to be either. Back in 2014? Yeah, guys were clearing a couple grand a week easy and the driver's had it pretty good. Tens years later it's gone to crap and not worth it.
Yea whatever 😂 stop spreading that propaganda. You make minimum wage doing that crap and then have to pay your taxes, car maintenance, gas and so on. There’s no real money in a job literally anyone can do.

Yes sir. So many older truck drivers out are in exactly that situation. Working basically till they die or they go from the truck strait to the nursing home. I knew a guy at my company that I’d see every weekend at the driver lounge at the yard. He was at least 70 yrs old living in his truck with a pack a day smoking habit. I was living in my truck too but I’m single with no kids or a wife. He had a wife and house in upstate NY. He said lived in the truck because his wife didn’t want him around.
