I was sailing from Albany to NYC in 1985 and we anchored for the night off Bannerman's Island. This was way before any restoration efforts had taken place and there was no dock as pictured in this video. Rowed the dinghy to the island and found a an open stretch where I could land among the rocks. Exploring the island in the twilight was surreal, I could feel the spirits roaming with me. I found a nice spot amidst the rubble and smoked a funny cigarette, hopeful that the walls that so far had stood the test of time were not yet ready to collapse upon me. For that hour I was king of the castle, such as it was.
That's the trouble with using re-bar in a concrete structure. As soon as it oxidizes it expands and causes the concrete to fail.Ironically the thing that was suppose to give this building its inherent strength is whats bringing it down.It would be a terrible shame to let it go.It would be easy to stabilize whats left of the structure, point the walls to strengthen whats left of them and cap the tops of the walls with slate to stop any further water damage from rain running threw the cracks.
You should've been wearing your hardhat instead of walking around the Castle with it in your hand. You could of had something fall and cracked your skull.

I was always intrigued by this place having seen it countless times from the train. Never made it out there, however. Thanks for sharing!
Very nice video, thanks. I'm a collector and have many things from B.I. so it is great to see where they once were.
It would be a good location for a Medieval or renaissance faire.
absolutely beautiful
loved seeing that place when i was a kid

EXCELENTE VIDEO, HERMOSO CASTILLO.
This place is beyond disrepair, beyond restoration. The place burned down on August 8, 1969.
Beautiful ruins ! I agree that it should just crumble away . It is extremely dangerous and it might fall down even faster by trying to patch it up .
in response to my question, it is Sigur Ros
