  • Commercial airliners carry a LOT of people! So today in Trailmakers I decided to build a cool ejection concept by Tatarenko Vladimir Nikolaevich.
Aviation is quite amazing and I always love to test these aircraft designs out in Trailmakers!

Part of the reason why is because how significantly more dangerous it is for the passengers... Not when it comes to travel but when it comes to trafficking, we're essentially cargo ready to be airdropped at any moment a lot more safety precautions would need to be involved and it would be super expensive. As well as the technological advances were already trying to find better means of traveling anyways.

The reason parachutes (in any configuration) is not used for commercial jets, is because about 90% of all accidents happen during takeoff and landing when the plane is mostly too low for parachutes to be effective. Also detaching part of the plane and landing it using gigantic parachutes is pretty sketchy, the military sometimes airdrop supplies, equipment and even cars (without people in them) but even in ideal conditions they quite often fail to deploy and even when they deploy they slam into the ground at bone breaking speeds. This whole idea is some engineer fantasy rather than a something seriously considered.
Conventional individual parachutes for each passenger is also problematic, because even if everyone were already strapped in to their parachutes and fully trained for solo drops, it's not possible to open the doors of a commercial jet when it's high up because the doors are plugged shut by the pressure difference, and by the time you have descended to a level where the doors will open, you're probably too low to parachute anyway, and you would need a lot of time to get every passenger through the back doors.
But passengers are not generally proffessional sky divers so they would probably die at a much higher rate if they tried to jump than if the pilots simply make an emergency landing. Also nobody would like to spend multiple hours in a jumpsuit strapped into a parachute every flight.

In my opinion it has a problem, so when the passenger fuselage detachs its gonna change the center of mass by a lot which will make the plane really unstable and that means the pilots won't have a chance, also fitting parachutes that can slow down that fuselage I a small space is hard and under a lot of stress the parachutes will tear apart so they shouldn't really do it.

it probably would not help cause the detached crew cabin has very little redundancy and also the people in the cockpit would also not survive when a plane crashes it is possible people survive while if the contraption malfunctioned the chance is a lot smaller and it would reduce the structural stability of the aircraft most likely causing more crashes and the idea is only useful when the cabin is level finally it is not cost effective and not reliable

There's dome reasons the detachable passenger cabin isn't implemented:
    - Adds construction and maintenance costs and weight, also increasing the fuel consumption, also increasing costs (ultimately, increasing plane ticket costs)
    - Incidents, in which that system would be effective, are too scarce to justify the increased costs.
    - That system may change the mentally of some pilots from "save the plane and passengers" to "drop the passengers and crash the plane"
    - In engine failure situations, planes can still glide and try a landing.
    - Dropping the passenger cabin may drasticaly change the aerodynamics and weight distribution of the plane.

This concept has many huge issues with it. First, when the fussalage detaches, it messes up the center of mass, which would cause the plane to nosedive, just like in the game. Second, the costs of outfiting every plane with parachutes would be very high. They also might add more weight to the plane, which may increase fuel costs. Third, there would be less space in the fuselage. Fourth, airplane accidents are very rare, so this would be very overkill. Fifth, the pilots wouldn't survive the plane crash. Sixth, if the plane is on fire, this system probably wouldnt help anything, and might even make it worse. Seventh, the fuselage would have no way to slow down enough so that the parachutes could deploy. Eighth, the fuselage is very heavy, so the parachutes would have to be very large, or there would have to be more of them. Also, the maintenance costs would be very high for this system, and there may be malfunctions. Parachutes are only practical in small planes, like the cirrus sr-22.

Commercial airlines haven’t done something like this because replacing their whole fleet would cost billions, and all the new weight and moving parts added by a system like this would lose them money on maintenance and fuel cost. Instead of doing that, cleaning up a plane crash every few years only costs a few million, and half the time they can convince the government to foot the bill.

Airlines never adopted the ejector plane because it had a very heavy fuselage and ejection system which led to less effeciency and more fuel costs. This combined with the smaller total passenger count made the plane very unattractive to airlines. (why have safety when you can have $?)

  • @dexterwohlrabe4380

So with the cabin ejection idea I don’t think it is reliable not just because of cost and complexity but also because of many other things like how it could cause a lot more structural failures due to most the plane being almost detached and connecting all the fuel electrical and hydraulic lines through the plane would be difficult also the system is not very redundant the smallest thing could cause a smaller failure to become catastrophic another thing is the system would not allow for the people in the cockpit to survive due to the plane being very unstable after losing the entire cabin
There is different reasons to the ejection seats to not including the cost some ejection seats take up a lot of room and also planes cruise at a very high altitude higher than safe limits which is why planes don’t have parachutes along with the fact the air at that altitude is to thin to breath so airlines would also need to give people oxygen also ejection seats like in fighter jets would melt the person behind them and have a chance of give the person ejecting serious injuries

I would love if airplanes had that feature, but I would not pay extra for it.
Before you spend money on a safety feature you need to ask yourself three questions:
    1. Is the activity dangerous enough to warrant safety measures of any kind?
    2. Is the cost of the safety measure commensurate with the increase in safety it will provide?
    3. Is there better and/or cheaper alternative.
The answer for these is no.
    1. Flying is simply not that dangerous. There is one commercial plane crash for every 16.7 million commercial flights.
    2. As we know flying isn’t that dangerous, and the vast preponderance of air accidents occur during take off, or landing, or result in an explosion of the entire plane. So on the most common use-case scenarios, your device will be of no benefit whatsoever.
    3. Planes could be made MORE safe than your safety measure would allow, for much less. Stricter pilot screening, for drugs, better training, more thorough examinations etc.
By comparison seatbelts cost a tiny fraction of what that device would and save lives almost daily. Typically half the people that die in a car crash were not wearing seat belts.
Nonetheless though, a very entertaining video.

This concept is not used, 1st I think it is expensive to prepare and maintain the system and 2nd there is no technology to create a parachute that can withstand the weight of a commercial airplane.
There are cases of small planes that have this system to save the plane completely.

Additional points of failure that are completely unnecessary. Planes have so many redundancies as it is, a detachable cabin just makes no sense. Not to mention, what’s going to prevent the cabin from spiraling out of control anyway? Either you’re going to have to engineer up some overly complicated safety measures to ensure safe ejection, decent & landing or you’re going to have to add a secondary control module, which the crew will be required to be trained on as well. Not all ideas are good ones lol
