The Trio - Scott, Mitch, Kirstie - have been singing together for many years thru high school (I think Scott and Mitch were friends in elementary school). They decided they wanted to try to win Season 3 of the Sing-Off but knew they needed more than the 3 singers. A friend in the a cappella community suggested Avi and they saw Kevin's video where he was cello-boxing and asked him if he wanted to join them. All 5 were together for the first time the day before their audition (if I remember correctly). That was in 2011. They have been together ever since with only one change. Avi left in 2017 (personal reasons, they are all still friends), but helped them find Matt who joined officially in 2018. I could be wrong about the history, but I think it is close enough. There are enough Pentaholics out there to correct me. :o)
Only thing I would add is that Kirstie & Mitch also knew each other when they were children doing local musical theater together. She was attending Catholic school during her elementary years while Scott & Mitch were in public school together. Kirstie & Scott met each other when she began attending public high school. All three basically became inseparable from that point on.
I just love watching other people fall for Pentatonix the way I did. I have been a fan since day one. I called them the hands-down winner of The Singoff from 8 measures into their first performance. While you have that focus on the visuals, you also listen very intensely to the music and greatly react accordingly. Great! Truly appreciated. Ben Bram and PTX are, for me, musical geniuses to arrange Daft Punk music this way. Really deserving of that Grammy.

Most acapella bands who have a really good bass bring their own speakers to handle the basses. Avi has blown speakers during concerts because they can't handle the low notes that their human voices produce. Go see them live when COVID is over. You will find the concert worth every penny.
They are a wonderful group. Everything they sing turns to Gold. My Granddaughter got to see them in concert when she was 12 or 11. She is 14 now. You are one fantastic reactor!

You need to watch the video too....it really shows the amount of work Avi & Kevin do to make this song....the trio are all brilliant but the reason we're all nodding our heads & tapping our toes is the beat put together by Avi & Kevin....Avi does amazing work with his swishing sounds and drum beats...this was filmed at Avi & Kevin's apartment in a closet & kitchen....they paid $400 for editing etc....they are musical magicians.....

I started 😂 when you were talking about them doing 2 songs at once, because I knew the end was coming up where they would be doing all 3 at once. If all you've seen is individual songs then you need to check out some of their evolution videos too! Evolution of Michael Jackson, Ev. of Music, Ev. of Rhianna & more! Not only do Kevin & Avi (or Kevin & Matt now) have to keep the beat & bass sounds going, but they have to switch between songs repeatedly without mistakes or it will throw off everyone.

They have been together sense 2010. The were the winning group on the show Sing-Off it was the 3rd season Steve , Mitch, and Kirstin went to high school together. Avi they found through a friend, and Kevin they found him on the internet Doing his Beatboxing while playing the cello.
They do these natural in rehearsals, one will start and the rest fill in. Later someone may have a suggestion but it is all natural for them to just do what each one does...Scott is good at arranging the lyrics...if you watch the sing offs when they were on (youtube has them) you can witness the raw talent of this group. Scott, Kirsti, & Mitch have been singing since Hi School, they are good friends. They have each gone to schools for different music careers, I know Kirsti went to to school for 5 part harmonies. Kevin studied in Asia and speaks Mandarin. Scott knows French and Kirsti knows Spanish...Talented group for sure. They rock the Reggae and Cuban, Havana, and do a mash-up of Despicito/Shape of you.

Mitch(high voice) and Kirstin change their looks often but are in every video. Any of their videos will be amazing to react to. This video was filmed in Avi and Kevin's Apartment closet and kitchen. It also won them their first Grammy award. Kevin is amazing, Not only does he beat box, he plays cello while beat boxing. He plays multiple instruments, speaks mandarin, sings, and graduated Pre med.
Hey first comment! There's a visual element that took me a while to notice. Through the entire song there's only 3 times I saw anyone's eyes close. The entire rest of the time all their eyes are wide open with those blue contacts.
Please read this full comment, info on fab live performances+..........I’m pretty sure I read Avi wasn’t enjoying all the traveling, and being away from his family. He left and created his own band, so he could decide where and when he traveled. I don’t think there were any hard feelings with the rest of Pentatonix, who have become world famous, with massive sell out tours. Avi is also doing really well with his band....If you want to hear base, then check out pantatonix’s evolution of music, the first few bars the base is incredible. If you want to see a brilliant live performance, go to UA-cam Q Pentatonix Florence and the machines, you will see a fantastic performance of Dog Days Are Over, it’s epic.
They created this song, as someone else pointed out, in a closet without any technicians, just them. Also they did it right after they were dropped (I know bad decision by someone) by their recording contract that was the prize for winning the Sing Off. I like to think they were telling that producer they didn't need him.
The person that dropped them wasn't their producer, it was a marketing person from Epic Records who didn't think that an a cappella group would sell. Their producer is Ben Bram who has been with them ever since the Sing Off days (he and Scott were already friends before that as well). And this video was put together more than a year after they were dropped by Epic. They did quite a few other videos between getting dropped and this one. The reason why this song and video was put together this way was because they had booked professional studio time to record the song and shoot the video, but it fell through at the last minute, so they decided to just do it themselves (with Ben's help).
Medleys and mashups are both combinations of songs; the difference is in how they're combined. Daft Punk was a medley for most of its length and turned into a mashup at the end.

The Trio (blond guy, high voice guy and the girl) have been doing it even longer, though it was mostly for fun before they started PTX.

@@HAP3SPEAKZ Avi was a folk singer/songwriter before PTX. He always wanted to write and compose both folk, and choral work plus he runs a summer camp for high school vocalists. PTX toured non-stop and he just burned out. He took a year off then started a solo career. His work is absolutely different from this but so good it makes your jaw drop. As good as he is this early in to a solo career, I think by the time he is done he will leave a magnificent body of original work.
You've missed a lot they started on The Sing Off in 2011 and went from there. They won the Sing Off and went to L.A. around a week or so after the move the record company dropped them because the felt they wouldn't be marketable. They then decided to put their music out on UA-cam and have worked their buns off to get where they are.
I really enjoy watching your reactions because you always point out things I don't notice. When you get a chance watch Sing (they wrote it) and their cover of Hallelujah, they care both great. They have a lot of other great songs too.

Don't take peoples comments to seriously, everyone wants you to notice what they noticed but it is not possible to notice everything the first time around. There is to much happening at once, we all watch these videos multiple times so just enjoy the music and comment on what you catch. The rest will take care of itself.

I loved how you noticed the different effects. They are so detailed with their arrangements. Learning them must take so much time to get it all in.

Please read this full comment, info on fab live performances+..........I’m pretty sure I read Avi wasn’t enjoying all the traveling, and being away from his family. He left and created his own band, so he could decide where and when he traveled. I don’t think there were any hard feelings with the rest of Pentatonix, who have become world famous, with massive sell out tours. Avi is also doing really well with his band....If you want to hear base, then check out pantatonix’s evolution of music, the first few bars the base is incredible. If you want to see a brilliant live performance, go to UA-cam Q Pentatonix Florence and the machines, you will see a fantastic performance of Dog Days Are Over, it’s epic.
They created this song, as someone else pointed out, in a closet without any technicians, just them. Also they did it right after they were dropped (I know bad decision by someone) by their recording contract that was the prize for winning the Sing Off. I like to think they were telling that producer they didn't need him.

The person that dropped them wasn't their producer, it was a marketing person from Epic Records who didn't think that an a cappella group would sell. Their producer is Ben Bram who has been with them ever since the Sing Off days (he and Scott were already friends before that as well). And this video was put together more than a year after they were dropped by Epic. They did quite a few other videos between getting dropped and this one. The reason why this song and video was put together this way was because they had booked professional studio time to record the song and shoot the video, but it fell through at the last minute, so they decided to just do it themselves (with Ben's help).
Full/correct title of the song is "Daft Punk Medley", _Medley_ (with e's) being the technical musical term for mashup.
Medleys and mashups are both combinations of songs; the difference is in how they're combined. Daft Punk was a medley for most of its length and turned into a mashup at the end.
Only Avi left the group. The one with the glasses was Mitch, he was just looking very different back then! He changes his looks a lot, so prepare!

Thank you for the reactions. I'm really enjoying them. You're not afraid to say your opinion and that makes your praise worth more. They've been doing this since 2011. The Trio (blond guy, high voice guy and the girl) have been doing it even longer, though it was mostly for fun before they started PTX.
They are putting a new album out on the 24th. I can't wait!!

They won the Sing Off I think in 2011 so you might want to go back and watch how they got their start. Avi Kaplan now is doing solo work - check out his own stuff - totally different genre. @@HAP3SPEAKZ Avi was a folk singer/songwriter before PTX. He always wanted to write and compose both folk, and choral work plus he runs a summer camp for high school vocalists.
PTX toured non-stop and he just burned out.
He took a year off then started a solo career. His work is absolutely different from this but so good it makes your jaw drop.
As good as he is this early in to a solo career, I think by the time he is done he will leave a magnificent body of original work.
You've missed a lot they started on The Sing Off in 2011 and went from there. They won the Sing Off and went to L.A. around a week or so after the move the record company dropped them because the felt they wouldn't be marketable. They then decided to put their music out on UA-cam and have worked their buns off to get where they are.
I really enjoy watching your reactions because you always point out things I don't notice. When you get a chance watch Sing (they wrote it) and their cover of Hallelujah, they care both great. They have a lot of other great songs too.

Don't take peoples comments to seriously, everyone wants you to notice what they noticed but it is not possible to notice everything the first time around. There is to much happening at once, we all watch these videos multiple times so just enjoy the music and comment on what you catch. The rest will take care of itself.

Mitch has lost quite a bit of weight and has totally changed his look multiple times over the years, but he's still the same.
