  • True story behind one of the most notorious names from the Wild West. New books about Billy the Kid appear multiple times each year, most filled with a tired rehash of much that has been previously known about the young outlaw. Is there anything to be learned about Billy the Kid that is "new?" Yes! Historians Kurt House and Roy B. Young have found it.
In addition to uncovering new information about Billy, the book contains several rare illustrations, some of which have never before been published, as well as a unique, detailed analysis of the arms used in the Lincoln County War.
Most of what has been known about Billy the Kid's life originated with Pat Garrett's biography of him, "An Authentic Life...." However, the book was seriously misnamed and is full of errors and the self-aggrandizement of the author.
In early to mid-2022, a new book Chasing Billy the Kid: Frank Stewart and the Untold Story of the Manhunt for William H. Bonney will hit the shelves. Nothing like it has been published before and it turns the whole "Pat Garrett as sole champion in the capture of Billy the Kid" concept around with the truth of what really happened in New Mexico in the winter of 1880

I will have the author reply. It should be on Amazon, as they just received the books.
New, hardcover copy of the latest book on the life of Billy the Kid, concentrating on the fall and winter 1880 chase-and-capture of Billy and the boys at Stinking Spring. 424 pp., pages 8 1/2 x 11, over 120 illustrations and documents, many never before published. Much new material. Also available: SIGNED copies; and limited edition in slipcase.

Who owns the Frank Stewart's pistol now? Really interesting story..my n-laws own a tract of land up in Dumas other side of Amarillo, 475 acres. I would be willing to say put an couple of archealogist out there and no telling what could be discovered in regards to the posse etc. Moore and Green are now counties up in the pan handle by the way. Good stuff gentleman, ill get your book.

Actually, as the book reveals, a PAIR of pistols was presented to Frank Stewart in January, 1881 as recorded in the Las Vegas newspapers. I purchased one in 2017, then started a search for the other one. Almost a year later, we discovered the other revolver in a very surprising situation and subsequently in 2019 we were able to unite the two Stewart pistols and photograph them together for the first time since the presentation almost 140 years before. Our book has great illustrations of the pistols. Thanks for your good question! Kurt House, Co-author

A recent take on the "Las Vegas"
tin type of Pat Garrett and others -- is that the line up
is of the posse (taken in Santa Fe) and that their names are on the photo...(.despite the claim of a date : Aug.1880.)
I think Frank Stewart 's name was said to be on the photo ?
Siringo gives Jim East's account of the capture
which wasn't end game for Canadian River as they then had John Poe check out
White Oaks ---- Prior to BTK's capture Pat had spies around
Ft Sumner but they were quiet after his escape from Lincoln : Poe's account is that it was his detective work that led to their being in Ft Sumner
    14 July 1881.

If the guns were shipped direct to Moore (early 1880) then the extravagant gift to his friend was unconnected with hunting BTK ....

Are you joking? The Las Vegas newspapers at the time reported "Accolades in Las Vegas" the week following the capture of BTK, stating the reason and BTK in turn presented Mrs. Scott Moore with his horse and she wrote it up in a poem in the newspaper also. After the posse reached Las Vegas with the gang, the newspaper recorded all kinds of gifts from prominent LV citizens "given in gratitude for capturing the Kid" You will get the whole picture once you read the book, that is one thing that makes the story so fascinating.

@@WildWestHistoryAssociation What a funny comment; our book quotes the Colt factory records of the date of the guns shipment. If not in gratitude for what Stewart did, then what was Moore's motive for the presentation? The Las Vegas newspapers reveal the motive; read them.

Ah, Green admits he was Frank Stewart...but Brushy Bill wasn't believable? Jesse James was believable until his death at 101, as was his niece. I considered Brushy quite credible and realistic. If he wasn't Bonnie, he was pretty close to all involved.

BTK gave East his rifle at Ft Sumner and later Stewart his horse -- perhaps because these two would ensure he got to Las Vegas alive....
Goodnight made known his high opinion of John Poe -- he may have thought simularly of Frank Stewart ....
Siringo spent time with BTK when he visited the LX
'78/'79 and liked the Kid --
Siringo may not have been at the capture ....but he and other cowboys were in Ft Sumner while BTK was at large after escaping Lincoln ....those involved in the capture were not -- according to Poe.... Pat Garrett was reluctant to go to
Ft Sumner : but just as Poe worked for Goodnight -- Pat owed his job to Chisum who may have even had another detective snooping around the town prior to Billy's " death."
