Hi Katz! Great vid. Just my advise take it or leave it. I am Italian and every year as a family we make about 20 to 30 bushels do tomatoes. We do all the work outside not to mess up the kitchen. We also blanch the tomatoes to soften the skins and make it easier to process. The other thing is your husband could probably add a motor to so that you wouldn't have to turn the handle manually. This is what my grandfather did and it worked great for many years. Hope this helps. Thanks for the
My late husband rigged a drill motor to our juicer and believe me, Kat, it saved a ton of work cranking that dang handle! I also used a metal cake pan to receive the juice instead of the bowl. That seemed to help also. Boy oh boy, if there was a way to do this without the mess, I’d be happy! We finally wised up and rigged an assembly line in our garage so we could hose down the floor.
I blanch, core, and peel my tomatoes, then throw them in the food processor. After they are all crushed up, I pour them into my Foley Food Mill and all I have left is seeds. Way less mess than this thing looks. Glad you showed us though, because I was considering buying one, but think I will stick to my way. Thanks Katz for your videos! I have learned a lot from them!
I have an old squeezo that was given to me by a friend. I have to say, the first time I used it it was a mess! After a few times using it we found the best way to handle it and the best way to clean it. I soak my strainer piece for a few minutes in hot soapy water, then use a toothbrush to scrub it clean. Hope you find this piece of equipment easier to use as time goes on.
PrepperA is a darling girl the way she is always helping her Mama. It must be such a joy to have a daughter like that.
But how did you put it together? The directions might as well be in Greek to me. I’m sending it back. 😞
I'm not a fan of that product.
continued...the jar brush has about 6" of bristles and is about 2" in diameter. It is a slightly tight fit on the narrow end but I just work it till all the pulp/skin is cleaned out. On both my juicer(strainer) and my dads, we both re-run the pulp till the seeds and skin are dry like you had done. I probably run mine at least 5 times but with the motor, it is easy for me. MUCH quicker than blanching and taking skins off at least with a large volume. Thanks again. Ray
I'm going to reserve final judgement until I process big tomatoes. I think the problem was that it was difficult to get the small, perfectly round cherry tomatoes to engage properly with the auger. Big tomatoes that have been cut up a little, exposing the flesh will surely be easier to grind up. I'm so glad you like it.
I'm glad you came over to check me out. Love Pastor Dowell! I don't always agree with him, but I really enjoy listening to him, especially on preparedness issues. He's a real man...I like that.
Thank you I have had one of these for years I wasn't sure I wanted to use it.
I have a saucemaster and I love mine. This week I especially love mine for apples. I just put up 15 pts of applesauce (and used the saucemaster) along with 32 pts of quartered apples and I still have a bunch to process. When I do tomatoes, my hands thank me for using the saucemaster rather than peel those tomatoes. I know the clean up can be a pain sometimes but it is a better deal for me.It also makes making seedless raspberry and blackberry jelly a snap. Thanks for sharing. God bless.
I can't wait till mine comes in!!! I should be here this week!! I really wanted it for doing raspberries and blackberries for jams, and of course the tomatos. Hopefully when you do your big tomatos you will change your mind. I asked hubby how the states with drought are looking with the corn and beans, he said MO seems to be the worst, he said your corn looks like its ready for harvest its all brown, he said other places, the corn is half green/brown and very short. hubby drives a big rig
Hello, first off, thank you so much for your videos. I have tried to watch them all. Also good job PrepperA for getting momma to re-run the tomato pulp. I am extremely blessed and have a juicer attachment that goes onto my Cabelas Meat grinder that is motorized but similar to yours and imstillworkin's. My dad has an identical one to imstillworkin's and it works well. He put a craftsman cordless drill on the end of his to speed things up. On mine, a jar brush quickly cleans out the screen.
Hi Katz! I am really bummed that you didn't find this worth while...I LOVE MINE! It is a pain to clean, but if you are doing a large volume, it is a small price to pay for the convenience. I use it when I do my sauces...it works like a charm. I have not tried it on the cherry toms, but it works great on my romas and amish pastes! I wonder if it is because I cut them in halves and quarters. I love that I don't have to core or skin them and it gets all the seeds out! Thanks for the vid!
Best sauce maker I have ever used
Katz I had the same one and I gave it away. Imstillworking has one that has a chute on the waste side to send the peels out further than the bowl that the product goes into and I think that would have made a huge difference on mine...I dehydrated my bumper crop of cherry tomatoes and grinded them into tomatoe powder. Worked out well.
Thank you so much for all your good suggestions.
Katz, Thanks soo much! this will be my first time so you were sooooo helpful with tips and info for me so I won't have to learn the hard way. Looks like the hole is not too big so you might have to cut up the bigger toms.
Thank you...it is. She is a wonderful addition to our family.
I do. Maybe we are just used to them, but seeds never bothered me, and canned tomatoes are so much easier. I love the taste, seeds and all. I really like stewed tomatoes in a lot of the meals I make.
Thanks for the suggestion. All those seed from the cherry tomatoes would be pretty bitter, I'd imagine. There's never any waste at our house. All organic matter goes to either the chicken, worm bin, or is composted.
We always parboiled them and peeled them and then put in the food mill. Turn, Turn, Turn, Reverse.. Add more... Took us days sometimes to make tomato juice for canning... Then on to the next project.
For the screen cleaning .. use a bottle brush for the inside of the screen.. and an ordinary nailbrush will do outside.. under running water.. I could not turn my handle, as the auger that came with it was too LONG, now have the right length...no prob...
I think you got one similar to the one I got. I agree it's messy, but it did do the job quickly and that was what I needed when I had a lot of fruit that was getting ripe fast. You might like it for something other than tomatoes. My tomatoes aren't in yet, but I want to give it a try. What I was concerned about was the goo. I find that very acidic. I might try scooping it out with larger tomatoes. I don't know. how did yours turn out? Do you feel you got the meat of the tomato?
I cook all my tomatoes first in a big pot and when they're soft enough I then run them through my Kitchen Aid strainer which does a very slick job. I also have the old Squeezo and by cooking them first, it's far easier to turn the crank. Once squeezed, I can then can the juice or prep it into whatever sauce I want for canning.
I hope this is not a repeat suggestion but if you decide to get another one. I have purchased Norpro sauce master II which has a small attachment at the to extend where the was comes out and I feel that makes a world of difference.
A lot of people think the seeds taste bitter, but I like them too.
Just an FYI... The fat end is the handle of the plunger. If you will turn it around when you are pushing the stuff thru, you'll find it works much better.
I have the Victorio and feel the same way about the clean up. I did find, if I use a soft bristle scrub brush on the screen, it makes it a little easier. I used my food processer for my tomato sauce, seeds, peel and all. It grinds it up so well that I don't even notice seeds or peels. My thinking is that many of the nutrients are in the skin so I prefer using it. Not sure what I want to do about your tomato soup. Peels or not, that is the question.....
whats the difference between this and a round metal crank food mill? Did you get any rain yet? I have been praying for you to get rain! You are so awesome and help so many people! God bless you!
I have been looking at this sauce maker and trying to determine myself if I want to buy it. I have a very similar accessory for my Kitchenaid stand mixer. I love using it (I use it for tomatoes, cooked apples and my grapes ... and intend to use it this year with pears for pear butter!), but am looking for a non-electric solution to make sure I know how to do things without electric if ever necessary.
Just checked BB&B doesn't carry it, but if you have a big home & farm kind of store close, you might check there.
Wow, has the price gone up in ten years. Late 2021 and I can't find it anywhere for under $120
I have this exact food strainer, and it is kinda a mess to use in my opinion but does do what you need.. maybe a little more practice would help too.. I no longer skin my tomatoes for like spag sauce , blend them up and you can't even tell they are there.. the seeds however don't bother me too much but does look better without them in the product.. thanks for the review!
When I can tomato juice I leave the seeds in but after a while the seeds turn dark.
I believe I've seen Bexarprepper use this same machine and she seemed to like it. As I recall she discovered that she was shoving the tomatoes into the hopper too hard which made it difficult to crank the machine. You might ask her opinion to see if she has any suggestions regarding optimal operation of the machine.
I have something similar to this that I bought many years ago. They are more work but, I have a sister with krohns disease and she cannot have the seeds and skins so this makes it so she can have the sause homemade.
That's such a key modification. It make the whole machine more workable.
I have the Roma food mill version of this from Lehmans. I really like it. (I did a video on it back in 2010) I used the juice for tomato sauce and the "guts" for salsa. Of course, I still don't have a decent recipe for salsa (mine always comes out too vinegar-y), but the mill worked great in that regard.
I had already decided to do it this way. Thanks for confirming what I thought would probably be a good way to do it. I appreciate you.
im definatly going with the attachment that goes on the kitchenaide mixer
I have the Victorio strainer and I love it. I've used it for tomatoes and apples (for big batches of applesauce for canning) and I always have my daughters help me with the cranking! Those wing nuts on your model seem a little awkward in my opinion.
Katz, You are my hero... y'all (you and Prepper A) are a great team. and I'm sure one day y'all will laugh about this!!! But it is very helpful to view this video... thank you very much. I appreciate you so much... and have learn a bunch from your videos... !!!! Wooo hooo!!! Take Care, Candy :-0 yeah!!!!
Hi Ladies, Can I get this at bed bath and beyond or locally rather than on line? I'd ike to give it a go and Katz , Thanks again for another video! :-)
I have a juicer steamer I got this umber and love it. I got juice o can up and then puréed the seeds and skins, etc and ma sauce with it and canned it up.
I think this machine works great, but I cut my tomatoes in half and soften them on the stove for about twenty minutes before running the hot tomatoes through the strainer. It is much easier than running raw tomatoes in the strainer and quicker than peeling the tomatoes and removing the seeds by hand.
I always heat my tomatoes in a pot first. The tomatoes start to break down and it makes the whole process much simpler. You won't have hardly any pulp left if you do it this way. No running it back through several times. Next time if you might try it this way I think you'll find it will be much more effective.
Thank you so much for you input. I appreciate you.
very smart of prepper a to run that through again... she is a true prepper! and glad to hear you get short with each other too... lol... tkx for the review... :-)
I've made it lots of times with peel and seeds. I grind it all up in my blender and it works just fine. It SO much faster to do it this way.
We were able to crank out a 5 gallon bucket of romas in about 5 minutes with this device. I prefer to use roma tomatoes for my suace and this was worth every penny vs blanching and skinning them.
You said you took the skin off the second time you made it. Do you take the skin off cherry tomatoes? That seems like a lot of work
Thanks, Bexar. I don't feel so bad now.
The way we do it is put a nut on where the handle goes and then hook up a drill to where the handle goes, it is much faster. .
I live in a small apt so I may be doing this at a friends house. I need some room!
Doesn't I'mstillworking use the Victorio mill?
seen your comment on pastor dowell's video "one more person" awesome.
Thank you for this video.. I was seriously thinking about buying this machine. Now I think I won't! Blessings!
Anybody use it for peppers? I have 10 gallons of peppers I grew and I don’t want to cut every pepper to remove seeds. I plan on roasting them to soften them before trying it out.
That's what my mess looked like when I tried my Victoria strainer I think it's a matter of practice makes perfect :) Blessings!
You would think after saying tomato 50x, you would finally realize theres only 1 letter A in the word and its not at the end of the word.
I don't remember what she uses...haven't watched her channel in a good while.
you need to hook up a power drill to the spot where the handle connects to it lol
I'm still reserving final judgement on this tool, until I process some full size tomatoes. I think the cherry tomatoes were hard on it. Be sure to check out imstillworkin's videos. She loves it.
You are making it hard on yourself...Will send you Wolfsgal's vid where we made our sauce...
Also, her's is a Vitoria...just a little different than mine...but the differences are important.
i think canned tomatoes with seeds left in has a better flavor.does anyone else think so ?
ps I use old tooth brushes for cleaning those tiny holes.
Use a drill my husband has done this for years
She ised a Victorio Mill and I bought this brand and I hope disnt make a booboo.
Gets stopped up to much
Had to get a dose of Katzcradul. Saw I never hit thumbs up so I watched it and 👍
You made my day! Thank you SO much for watching my videos.
