I read this in one day. My mom died of cancer last Nov and she was not the best mom, and at times abusive. It was so helpful to read about someone else who has a complicated relationship with their mom. Most of the dead mom books are about loving and beautiful moms. I had yet to see something that talks about the utter heartbreak but also the relief that comes from losing a complexly flawed parent.
Also, I found it really cool how Jenette uncovers the horrors of roles in TV in the 90s and 2000s. All the child roles had the most toxic and problematic steroetypes and names.
I liked the narration because it wasn't a performance, it felt like she was just telling her story. There's a part when she pauses slightly and her voice is cracking, I'm glad they kept it in as it showed how important it was for Jennette to tell her story
Didn't know anything about her since I never watched iCarly, but I saw an interview she did recently and was captivated by her personality and her story. Thanks for this review! I'm on the waiting list at the library (149 people ahead of me!) But I have a friend who might buy it and said she'd lend it to me.
I don't know... Even if the title were half serious I'd still think it's a valid title. Sometimes, our parents aren't good people or good parents. We have to stop putting Parenthood on a pedestal. Mom's aren't automatically "good" because they had children. I think we're actually geared to be more damning when fathers are absent or abusive than when mothers are. Because often abuse by a mother while it can be physical, is more often psychological in nature. It embeds in us all sorts of disordered thinking and negative self image and self talk. Oftentimes mother's who are like this will try to mold their children into having the same insecurities they do, by projecting them onto their children. It's probably true and valid that there was relief and comfortability that came only after her mom died. Hence the title is absolutely fair.
Olive, you are the GOAT when it comes to delivering book reviews (among other things)! This is the most fair, thorough, and respectful review I’ve seen of this book!
You are a gifted reviewer. Thank you for your thoughts, just placed a hold with my library. It must be a hot ticket since there is an estimated 21 week wait.
I appreciate the care that you took to discuss Jennette McCurdy and her book as a whole rather than highlighting the gossip. Not something I think you’d do anyway! I can’t wait to read this. My much younger brother used to watch iCarly so I’m very intrigued to see what this experience was to her.
@@CaulkMongler I agree. I’ve experienced hardship in childhood myself, and thought maybe reading this book will bring a little peace and healing for me as I can connect with Jennette’s writing. ❣️
I agree with you all. Lorena, I am so sorry you have had to endure such treatment. You are not alone. You don't have to deal with this alone. wtfwhat, amen. We earthlings period are supposed to have this kind of empathy for ALL. And Kelly Reiland, so you connected too. From a fellow abuse survivor...you have love available from people who do care.
I'm in the middle of it right now, it is a wonderful gift of a book for me personally. I went through some things with my mom and my family that were definitely extremely different from Jennette's experience, but that complex feeling of having so much love and care for your mom while simultaneously being so angry about how you were treated is something I've been working through for years (I think will be my biggest lifelong struggle, tbh). It has been healing for me to read these thoughts and feelings that are so similar to mine. Just wanted to say I really appreciate how you reviewed this book, too! Even though I haven't finished it I agree with everything you say about it.
Oh I am so glad you did this review! I've been waiting for this book to come out and am listening to it on Scribd. I too had a complicated/problematic relationship with my mother and even if it's not something you want to have in common with another human it's validating to know you're not alone. I saw a clip of her being interviewed by George Stephanopoulos on GMA. She shut him down when he tried to ask about Nickelodeon. It was great!.
My nephew used to LOVE iCarly when he was a young boy so I've watched quite a bit of it. Sam was my favorite on the show. I've been curious about this book since I heard about it so thank you for such a wonderful review. I don't usually read memoirs but this is one I think I'll be adding to my tbr.
Olive will you share what lipstick and blush you have on? I love adding a new shade of lipstick to my repertoire almost as much as adding to my TBR list. Perfect match to the book cover!
I watched a review or three about this book and it's made me decide to purchase a physical copy, not only to support someone who played an important role in a piece of media that I enjoyed when I was young, but also to celebrate her forward motion away from the life that her mother forced her into and towards one she enjoys more genuinely, in writing and direction instead of acting, and her healing from the grievous mental and emotional wounds that she suffered in the process.
I know what word you refuse to say (and I’m not even finished with the book yet), and I totally agree with you. It is almost totally drained of its clinical meaning. But this was a good place to use it if I have ever seen one.
This is on the short side of my long list of want to reads.. my partner was a victim of abuse during his childhood and I'm always interested in additional perspective (his dad passed away several years back and I think it might be poignant)
I am so glad you did this review. I was curious how the audiobook would stack up against the physical. I have easier access to the audio so i think I will stick with that =)
Wow! Did not see that coming given the title! I’m not generally a non fiction reader, i prefer to escape reality, but this seems like a topic that needs to be explored and will help so many dealing with their own complicated families and feelings.
Great review. I don't read many memoirs but I think I will pick this up. Some things sound like they might resonate with me. And wouldn't you know that the first time I'm actually wanting to know what lipstick you are wearing is the one video I noticed you didn't list it in the description. :) Well, it looks great on you
Honest question:How could I know or verify what she says it's all true?...I watched iCarly but I don't even remember much about that thing and haven't read the book yet... I'm trying to decide if I buy it or not...but the mom is dead and I don't just believe something because someone says it!
Thanks for this review! I will definitely read it although I never watched her as an actor-child and actually had never heard of her before this book came out.
I've listened to a few episodes of her podcast and she's definitely worth listening to for as much power as she drives into cautionary topics like body image and dealing with acting pressures. Also, I look at this cover and wonder if it was intentionally trying to evoke those early 80s/90s Young Adult books (because Iooking at that, I'm reminded of stuff like THE BABYSITTER CLUB series or certain Judy Blume book covers)........looking forward to reading this.
I hadn't heard that Jeanette was raised LDS. I was thinking about reading it, knowing that it would probably hit pretty close to home. But the church involvement adds too much disquieting familiarity for me. My relationship with my own mother was a lot like Jeanette's, minus the acting career. Active membership in the LDS church turns unpleasant mothers into monsters.

Same. I'm number 199 of 511 waiting on hold too.
I got the audio book for free from Amazon:). Maybe look into it if you don't mind hearing her narrate it.
Dude you never watched ICarly it’s literally Iconic
To me the craziest part is how much she remembered in extreme detail.

This video is why I love your reviews. Because YOU are so level-headed and fair in your reviews.
My goodness. I feel so bad for Jennette. But I'm glad she's been able to heal from the hard life she's had.
This sounds like a fascinating read and a really nuanced discussion about a fraught relationship. Looking forward to trying it one day.

You hit the nail on the head on so many points, and I think you and I had a very similar reaction to this book. Thank you for sharing.
I'd never heard of her until this book came out and I'm so intrigued now! Everyone says it's a great memoir!
Oh gosh. It sounds like my relationship with my mother. I want to know her story, but I’m worried it’ll be triggering 😰
Who knows, knowing that others have experienced the same thing you have can be healing.

hello! really appreciate your discretion & respect towards the author. haven't read the book. thank
you for the enlightening review.

Good review! Thank you. I will be listening to the audiobook.
I love how thoughtfully you reviewed this book.
I had seen that book too. My daughter watched her show when she was younger. Definitely seemed interesting.
I've been hearing such great things about this! Looking forward to reading it
Can't wait to read this! Adding it to my TBR for Nonfiction November.
Another book on difficult mother-daughter relationship is Linda Gray Sexton's autobiography.
I am so glad you did this review. I was curious how the audiobook would stack up against the physical. I have easier access to the audio so i think I will stick with that =)
Also the matching of this book cover with your shirt and lipstick is so satisfying

You have an audio book voice! I'd listen to anything you were reading to me lol I love your voice!
Are there any photos in this book? I dont now should i buy printed version or ebook would be enough.
Where do I find the audio version narrated by Jennette McCurdy herself?
I was waiting for your review of this book!! 🙌 i can’t wait to get my turn of the audiobook from my library!
The true villain of this book is her grandma.
It’s crystal clear where her mom got all of her negative characteristics from, sadly.
I live in Europe and I was wondering if I should pick it up and now I will
Excellent review. I'm looking forward to reading this.
I bought this book from Amazon, but I am on a waiting list because they sold out!!! I can’t wait to get it and read it.
So happy to hear your thoughts on this. That title definitely gets one’s attention. 😊💙
I'm not a fan of nonfiction but I'm going to read this

Does the "word" you were referring to begin with an 'n'?
Narcissistic? I’m curious as well…

Never heard of her, but the book sounds interesting.

Would you be willing to review my book?
You're the best ❤
My mom pushed me into things, and we always tried to make my mom happy, always talked about the family weight and everyone else’s! Isn’t that life?
lol maybe read the book to see just how abusive her mum was
