Man would you just release an album of your originals already! I love your style Alec.
Thanks so much Tim! :)
Man, every single member of your band is outstanding. Your lyricist also kicks ass!
Thanks so much Johannes! That’s extremely kind.
Great as always!🤘
Thanks so much Ant! :)
What a great video well done !!!
Thank you so much! 🧡
As always, a great song and review to watch after waking up in the morning.
Thank you so much! :)
Love your production, Alec! Keep it up, man.
Thanks so much Luis! :)
You are the "fantastic sounding unit". Jokes aside, great performance, and thanks for this comprehensive real-life test. As usual, you rock.
Thanks so much Chris! :)
Nice work Alec
Thanks so much! :)
Thank you for the review. I’m very interested in this unit.
Thank you so much Brandon! :)
Yay, new Alec Brits video! ❤❤ perfect for a lazy sunday
Thanks Jorn! :)
I really appreciate your musicianship as well as the well thought out review style you have, well done Alec
Thank you so much! :)
Oh that's one more fine song, and as always the video is really well made, thank you 👌🏼
Thanks so much! :)
Instant subscription. Really enjoyed this --your music sounds great.
Thanks so much! :) will keep working on it.
Keep these videos coming !
Working on it! :)
Yes! More Alec! So so good to have the demo song be twice as long as usual - That 67 and this channel strip are really a killer sounding pair, I gotta say.
Thanks so much Nkozi! :) yeah, they were working together on a lot of projects for a few weeks there. Gonna be sad to see the 81a’s go.
the percussion twins was a great touch lol. Amazing quality review as always.
😂. Thanks so much!
Alec Alec Alec. You never dissappoint!!! Great Review
Thanks so much Warren! :)
Man, your music is the best of your videos. Your videos are so useful toguht, I bought the Evo 4 thanks to you. But your music, it's just wow.
Thank you so much Matías! :) I hope you are enjoying the EVO.
Wow, der klingt toll mit dem u 67 , besonders der Gesang und die Gitarren, und wieder ein toller song und super gemischt und performance sehr gut!!! Danke!
Thanks so much Gabriele! :)
Great review. I appreciate your honesty about the omissions as well. Looks and sounds like a great unit! Wife only allows me with 2U on my desk so I went EC2 and an OG lynx aurora 8 channel with thunderbolt 2. With my OC818 it's pretty much endgame for me.
Thanks so much John. :) that’s a great setup you have there. 👌🏽
Thanks Alec! Great song, as always, which makes this device sound even better. I would love to see you reviewing the BAE 1032. I can’t find any serious reviews out there…
Thank you so much! Will see what I can do Daniel! :)
Good video - nice production values - efficient presentation -----
Thanks Thomas! :)
Good Demo Song as always.
Thank you so much Toy! :)
Great video! Would love to see you review CAPI preamps or Pearlman and Soyuz mics!
I’ll try my best to get my hands on some of those units! :) thanks for the suggestions.
Greatest video, Mr.Alec
I am Felipe De Castro from Brazil ,beginner radialista and streamer.
Lord bless you,Thanks for the help um my journey.
Bit Thanks for Mattar attention.
Felipe
Thanks so much Felipe! :)
Thanks
Thank you so much! 🧡
personally, i use shelford channels. but a musician like you can make ANY mic pre sound fantastic. cheers,
Thanks Eddie! :) them shelfords are special.
Thanks for the video. Not found of that brand. Customer support was non existant for me on the successor comp that was faulty. Fortunately I was able to send it back to Thomann. Never again.
I’m sorry to hear that! Good to know though for long term users out there!
Good to know.
Very to the point explanation of PREAM..
Thanks Harvinder. :)
Great video as always. Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you so much mrsayang! :)
@@alecbrits welcome Sir
Thanks!
Thank you so much Paul! :D
❤your Tunes
Thanks so much Kevin. 🪐
That song is amazing
Thanks so much! :)
Very nice song.
Thanks Paul! :)
Would love to see your thoughts on the HA Britstrip and the RND Newton. I really like the way you do videos man
Sure thing Jack. :)
Hi Alec ! Yet again another great video :)
How would you compare this unit to the Ams neve 1073 DPX ?
Thanks so much Darwin! :) they are different in a lot of ways. The 81a has a lot more tonal options. Hard to compare really.
The Burbank Audio company in California, liscenced by AMS Neve, offer a console which is 73 Pres and a fully flexible 81 eq with sweeping HPF. The console is priced at the same range as API 1608 Type consoles and they sound amazing. Not sure if they are even going anymore but the consoles were a huge hit. They are called the Neve Custom 75 consoles. Apparently these are not AMS Neve knock offs, its AMS Neve pres and eqs all day long, liscenced out and put into a proper console format. And the only other way to get this combo of 73 pres and 81 eqs? Heritage Audio!
I remember reading about them. They looked incredible. :)
Love your reviews! Wonder how this compares to a shelford Rupert neve?
Thanks Darryl! :) different beasts for sure. The Shelford has a compressor as well, and the silk circuit is a different beast altogether.
I would love to see you do a video using the cheapest crappy recording equipment because I know the recording would still sound amazing. You prove that it doesn’t matter about equipment
That’s actually something I’m planning on doing next year. :)
Hi Alec, excellent production and beautiful music and vocals as always.
But having demoed so many pieces of gear what have you kept for extended periods of time?
1. Pre, eq, comp, and combos
2. Mics
3. Mixer
4. Conversion
I think finance is the limiting factor, never taste. The Cranborne Carnaby EQ’s have stayed and get used everyday. The Neve 1073 DPX is the same. API 550 eq, and the Neumann U67’s have stayed.
Nice demo! Would love to collab with you/maybe mix or master one of your songs in the future. You have a very nice singing voice!
Thanks so much! :)
Great demo track on this one - your vox were in the Sting territory.
So, really.... What is your fine tonal comparison of this to the AMS 1073 pair? Yes, it's a different EQ circuit, but you know what I mean. Is there any depth, clarity, image difference?
Thanks Daniel! :)
They are different beasts to each other really, so I am hesitant to compare them directly. I used them both at the same time for a few sessions. I tended to go for the 81A More often for the flexibility and the option to get to a more finished result faster without having to rely on software to finish the EQing for me.
@@alecbrits I see. Thanks much!
could you do a video where you talk about what you'd pick to build a minimal 500 rack?
or a simple rack (kind of minimal) ^^ trying to get into mixing and mastering and i really like all your productions so your advice could be great!
Sure thing. :) a starters guide to outboard would be an interesting video for sure.
Dude, your songs are great. Release them!!!!
Working on it Joey! :D first one is coming later this year.
@@alecbrits great news!!! Hope you used the Shelford on that one!!!
@@joeyramonelookalike the shelfords are gone sadly! They were review units. 😞
@@alecbrits ohhh no, however.... video opportunity right there: how to achieve shelford's sound for less.
Sounds really nice but you can only record 2 signals at once on this unit, right?Beside the review, that's a really great tune you recorded. It's got hints of Sting. Love it.
It’s only one signal per unit. :) mic and line inputs. Thanks so much!
I'd love to see a UL listed stamp, but yeah, hopefully the only fire it provides is on your sweet tracks
Not too sure what you mean here. :) but thank you!
The UL enterprise[3] is a global safety science company headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, composed of three organizations, UL Research Institutes, UL Standards & Engagement and UL Solutions.
Established in 1894, the UL enterprise was founded as the Underwriters' Electrical Bureau (a bureau of the National Board of Fire Underwriters),[4] and was known throughout the 20th century as Underwriters Laboratories. On January 1, 2012, Underwriters Laboratories became the parent company of a for-profit company in the U.S named UL LLC, a limited liability corporation, which took over the product testing and certification business. On June 26, 2022, the companies rebranded into three distinct organizations that make up the UL enterprise. -Wikipedia
@@RealHomeRecording well, that clarifies that.
Hi, great content! If you could only keep one between the 1073 DPX and a pair of HA81a which would you keep? I’m about to order a pair of the HA81a’s, I’m a drummer and I already have a WA273 and 12 channels of the WA412 for the “API” sound thanks! 👍
Thanks so much Fernando, sounds like a great setup you have! I think my view on it is, I’d rather have 3 HA81’s than one DPX. :)
@@alecbrits great! Thank you so much! 🙂
I've been using this with a Telefunken tf51 and Lindell 76. Can you shed some light on how you like to set the input/output for a tube condensor?
Nice combination! :) I keep the output fully open, then dial in the minimum amount of input gain to achieve the level I’m looking for, the. Trim back the output gain if it’s slightly too hot. If you are looking for a thicker and more harmonically rich tone, then click it one up on the gain and dial it back on the output. :)
Thanks for the great review. How does the eq compare to the standard neve style? Does it sound d different or is there just another band based on the same sound?
Thanks
It’s definitely based on the same sound, just with more functionality with the filters and the extra mid band.
Waow your songs 🥰 ams neve 1073spx or this heritage ?
Hard to say from this side of things. They are very different tools. The Heritage has a very powerful EQ without the limitations of the 73 style eq.
Alec, do you have a link to your music ? Spotify or some service where I could listen to your music ?
Hey Jasper! :) there will be songs released very soon!
Zwo of these or the neve dpx?
For me personally i‘d like to go with the dpx, but the built quality is bad. Don‘t want to repair the product.
What do you think, I should do?
Tough choice really. I prefer the flexibility of the tones from the heritage. :)
For the drums, looks like you had 3 mics (2x u67 and a beta 52 on kick). Did each mic have a ha81a or just the overheads? If not, what did you run the drum mics through?
Thanks for the demo. Sounded great!
Thanks! :) only two mics on the drums, it’s just one U67 on the overhead and the Beta 52 on the kick for the drums. Both going through the Heritage 81a.
Sounds as a great gear. Is there 2 inputs? Over head and bd both
@@tonttu68I had two channels. :) one on overhead one on kick.
I always thought the preamp section is the best part of the 1081, and I prefer to EQ 'in the box' in post - is there any good 1081 clone available, apart from the quite costly AMS reissue module?
AML does one I believe. :)
@@alecbrits Thanks! C800g - 1081 - CL1B is a classic 'contemporary RnB' vocal chain - sadly no bargain...
@@tom_k_d yeah, that’s a serious amount of top shelf components. :)
@@tom_k_d the vast majority are listening on crappy car speakers or earbuds through a free Spotify account any way. Fug 'em, they don't deserve a nice equipment chain like paying audiences with nice hi-fi equipment once did!
Cool ,Reminds me of John Mayer
Thanks so much! :)
Doesn't BAE have a 1084 clone (I don't think they have a 1081) and other variants with more EQ points?
Also, how does this compare to the 1073DPX sonically?
I believe BAE do have some options out there yes. :)
Well, it has a lot more sonic functionality. So it’s not really an apples to apples comparison.
@@alecbrits Thanks Alec, I meant how does the pre compare. 😊 The EQ is of course a lot more flexible on the 81A.
Compared to the Shelford Channel, 81A sounds darker and more muffled, to my ears. Shelford Channel is more clear. Songs are both good though.
Thanks Jens! :)
Heritage audio SUPER 8 OR OPX 1073?
Depends on what you are looking for really. They OPX does not sound like a 1073, it’s more open and cannot be driven. The super 8 can be driven and has transformers in both the input and output. :)
@@alecbrits i really just just record and track drums... so some nice dry clean drums would be dope... then i could add color. but i do like th efact the SUPER 8 has output and input transformers... i just need it for my drum set really... i love your demo of the opx 1073 i really do like classic soul n rnb so i dont really drive the drums hard like that...
did you have multiple units recording drums?
Just two units. :) as described on the video.
@@alecbrits thanks for the reply
Love your channel bro
@@realiam1am thanks so much!
I have a Heritage Audio RAM 2000 monitor controller. It is built like a tank and has a really really solid power connector. So solid, he didn't put a power switch on it at all :). I use an inline switch to solve that. Anyway, to my point, I REALLY really don't like his choice of power socket on these, it lets down an otherwise solid piece of gear. It's a VERY strange choice compared to the overall quality of his kit, and begs the question... WHY????.
Guessing it’s a price point move. :)
@@alecbrits Yep, weird one!!
My Dangerous Music Source also does not have a power switch. I just leave it always on, though I did recently buy a remote powered outlet switch for it and other gear that I will set up soon.
Funny how many people don’t comment on the unit but asks you for a full album. Take a hint brotha.
Working on getting the finances and tunes together for it! :)
@@alecbrits oh dam that’s really awesome ! I gots to say your song writing and arrangements are really good.
I’ll def have a listen. You’re gonna track mix and master urself ?
Mayb you can document that. You’ll thank me when you’re 75 years old showing your grand children.
This or BAE
Losing weight? :)
Who knows. :)
This is not a fair review because anything you run that God Given voice is going to sounds amazing. 🔥🔥🫡🤜🏽🤛🏽 joking aside, great video, and your talent is just amazing. Blessings to you
Thank you so much!! :D
