  • On today's show, our hoarders are reintroduced to their forgotten possessions, are shocked at what they've hung on to, and unearth some hidden gems to sell at auction.
Self-storage is big business and can help us create space in our over-crowded home. But, some have taken their storage hoarding too far, clinging on to things they never see or use, and it’s costing them a fortune

As someone who comes from a family of antique dealers and collectors, it's SO ANNOYING when people completely ignore valuations because they think they're worth more because they "look" old or expensive. The majority of the things the clothes shop owner had you could see from a glance were either tat that he would struggle to sell at even the suggested price or just fake reproductions from china. The dealer they got on to value his items was being VERY generous with his valuations and he still thought to add a few more hundred pounds to the reserves. It just amazes me when people with no experience in the field think that they know better than professionals. Especially seeing as he was wayyyyyyyy off with literally every valuation of all his "antiques".....rant over thank you for coming to my TED talk

Sounds much like my ex, who always paid over the odds and expected what he sold to be worth much more than it was. Failing to believe the expert can be one of three things: arrogance; lack of understanding of current market value; or passive-aggressive determination not to part with things.

John needs a good therapist - his problem isn't just the storage unit - he has well and truly "crossed the Rubicon" and is a full-blown Hoarder. A technical journal from 1990 is no longer worth the paper it's printed on, and the fact that he is prefacing "not getting rid of much - just a little" as he is opening up a Garage full of crap, proves there is a Psychological attachment to junk that is at play. Sad that somebody that intelligent doesn't understand he has an irrational attachment to useless stuff.

"That'll be worth money some day" - the unconscious lie told by working class parents who paid over the odds for 'quality' crap and still believed by millions. Ex paid £1000s to store stuff he didn't get 10% of it back on selling. Ditch it. None of my shit is worth much except for my fiddle. If my house was on fire I'd grab that, family photos and the cats, the rest can burn in hell.

@Irene OMG Irene, you are so spot on, and you made me laugh out loud. Hubbie and I downsized 18 months ago and as I paint each room, we are trying to purge even more crap. In the Spring we are moving all the unnecessary furniture into the Garage, and I'm posting photos for our kids, nieces, nephews. 30 days to pick it up - first come, first served. Anything left goes online or to Goodwill. Actually, we already know our kids don't want it. Not the least bit interested in antiques. Having cleared out a two story home and large apartment after my parents and Aunts passed away, I know my boys would have a hell of a time knowing what to do with our crap if we popped off tomorrow. You: Fiddle, Cat, Photos...Nailed It. 👍😂

These storage units always have a reason behind them to begin with. Inheritance, hardships like downsizing homes, moving and more. Its great to get rid of them when it is time but carefully! Antique china is literally all over the thrift stores here in the states! I picked up a set of gorgeous Limoges china years ago for nothing...pennies on the dollar as Grandma would say. I recently gave my daughter this set who loved it! I decided to down size as I have plenty of old china,. Before I sell anything I have, I always check with my 4 grown kids to make sure none of them want it first. I have collected antiques for next to nothing here for years. They become part of my decor in my home. If it doesn't fit, I can't have it or I switch out something that isn't as nice. I will not store anything and really believe we all need to be careful not to. I was given a beautiful Antique wood and metal umbrella stand from England that my friends moved here with many antiques. They had picked up something else for that space it was in. They have a gorgeous 5,000 square foot home filled with English antiques and thousands of books! With having an estate here with a second home and art studio above large garage as well on their property.....I am sure when the two daughters inherit... they will sell ALL OF IT. The young do not want our antiques! These girls here would make millions off the estate and the contents include items hundreds of years old....I am of the mind that If a family member wants Grandmas china...GIVE IT TO HER. That is the kindest way to pass down something precious to a family member. If no one wants your precious things...they will be sold when you are gone. My great Aunt literally gave almost everything away to separate people when she was elderly. She told me it gave her great pleasure to gift her family those precious things!

So this must be a late-in-life daughter who is definitely not really interested in you dad other than I'm going to get all of Grandma's stuff even though you're broke dad and you wear old stuff. Everything you have here is out of date. Where really if he were to sell it in a market stall the clubbers would buy it and she doesn't know anything about fashion. But I'm going to tell my dad that he doesn't know anything either. Of course they always use someone who's not that supportive don't they?
PS I'm a graduate personal property appraiser I went to college for it and so when I watch these shows it's always cracks me up what people think their stuff is worth but what's amazing is I don't really know what their stuff is worth the things he thinks that are worth a ton of money arts and the things that are really worth money they didn't take good care of so that it was sold for more money.

Have you seen the episode of Antiques Roadshow (the U.S. show) where a woman brought in a small drop leaf table that she'd bought 25 years earlier at a garage sale for $35? It sold at auction for close to $500K. A museum bought it.
Another woman brought in Jade pieces that her father had bought after WWII (in China, I believe) The collection was valued at $1,000,000. A Navajo blanket a man had had for years was valued at something like $500,000.
      The stuff of dreams!
Antiques Roadshow has some episodes where they revisit items from previous shows to see if their values have increased or decreased. Some of the toys and pottery have really lost value.

wonder what company they used that picked up the stuff to sell online and how much they charge. Interesting. Anyone know?

Not sure but there are quite a few companies who do it eg if you cannot be bothered to do the ebay selling yourself. I expect the commission is quite high and they probably limit what they take to a certain value or quantity of items. Eg I suspect they do not want very cheap books or old clothes.

11:35 hmm this is the same auction as in ep 1 time 43:33
Are this all fake and actors? Same wares for sale on the shelfs and same buyers even that dirty old man with his boot on the stool and the lady who looks like she is sleeping beside him. But the guy in the blue shirt to the left of the auctioneer is not on the other video.
Bahhhh this show is not even real.

Nah, it's not like that scripted/staged Storage Wars thing. It's more like one of those hoarding shows.

2/9/20....The "flamboyant fashion leader" from the late 70s forward is wonderful! BET he could ORGANIZE the CLOTHING & sell/auction it ALL to a rich celeb "collector" or to a high end costume store!
NOT to mention other types of items he has in storage.
HOPE he makes LOTS of 💰 @ auction!
