Having marched another corps in 92, I remember feeling a surge of electricity just race through the parking lot in Camp Randall that evening when Clowns began to play. I ran over to witness a moment I would never forget. The man himself conducting his hornline. What an emotional impact, even for those of us who didn’t march Vanguard.
92 was my age out year with the Freelancers. I marched there from 87-92. I will never forget Gail offering up Vanguards food truck to us when our chuckwagon broke down in 87. We had just folded the year before and the corps had NO money. Cant remember exactly where it was (somewhere in the Midwest) but it would seem that Gail got wind of the fact that we were literally playing standstills at fast food joints for free food. Well, it would seem that Vanguard members weren't his ONLY kids... turns out it was ALL drum corps kids. I was young and didn't really know much or even really who Gail was and his importance to the activity... But I do remember him going around our members after a show telling us that his chuckwagon was open and we were free to come eat with the Vanguard. An absolute giant of a man.
OMG thank you so much for creating the wonderful video❤. 1992 was my last year playing in the Corps and the most memorable one too! Everyone in the Corps was awesome.
The low placement of this percussion section at finals is an indictment of the DCI judging system.
