    My friend and I were watching the fight and she said “I don’t get it, is he moving his legs as some sort of defense?” And I said “no, he’s trying to communicate to the ref that he’s still in it.”. Come on, I’m just an armchair coach and even I knew he was in it. The call made no sense at all. It shouldn’t even be up for debate. He should contest that loss and win. Watch the rest of the fight, it was a one sided beat down.

    Worst decision ive ever seen if the ref thought he was out he should have called it earlier the guy fought to hold for the bell and he did that it should go the cards he was moving his legs to show he was ok and as soon as round finish he took a breath and went to get up....you cant take that away from him

    The ref did not stop the fight because 1. He didn’t tap, and 2. The ref didn’t think he was out.
    I don’t get what the debate is. He looked dizzy after the bell rang? So did bisping after Silva knees him. So did Dillashaw after getting cracked by Garbrandt. They came back and won those fights in the next round. Sean O’Malley couldn’t even stand up to have his hand raised at the end of his last fight.... still won.
    This call made no sense, any way you slice it.

    OMG I'm reading the comments and all the reactions in the news, and I can't believe most ppl think that he was out! He never went out, he kept kicking to show that he's still awake, chose not to fight hands for some reason, perhaps his hands were tired, because he believed in his neck and that all he had to do was survive until the end. When the horn sounded and Simon released the choke, he relaxed to catch some breath, and that's why he looked as he was out, but he believed that the fight was over. And when Simon implied that he was out, he promptly responded that he wasn't, and anyone who is out even for a few seconds, cannot react that quickly. He was able to get up, but haven't felt the need to up until the doctors showed up, and then he tried, but was stopped, and he was completely alert and responsive to their instructions. Serra-Longo, this is your case, but I don't doubt the commission will protect their ref's decision, as it states in the rules, it is final. Bad decision, but won't be overturned imo.

    Btw, the doctor revealed that the first thing he said was "what happened ?",then when told, he attempted to get up. It's the right thing to do btw, if the doctors think you're out, to keep you in that position instead of you attempting to running around.

    About open eyes. Rener Gracie in one of their videos on GracieBreakdown (i think it was a video about a kid choking his bigger brother to death) said that the eyes might be open when you are unconcious. It's not that simple to tell so they have a rule to release the choke in ten seconds.

    4 years later after being reminded of this bullsh¡t call after Dvalishvili win over Yan. With 55secs left, Dvalishvili suffered a stinger when he hit his head on the canvas. The stinger caused him to lose feeling in his arms, he’s kicking (weirdly) to show the ref he’s not out. He never goes out.
    Either way, ref doesn’t stop the fight. The clock expires. The fight ABSOLUTELY has to go to the judges. The fight is over. The ref can’t come in 5 seconds after the fight is over, to declare the fight is over.

      He was definitely very close to being out cold, but he was only half shut off. He was still conscious of what was happening, but his body wasn't responding adequately with half the blood to his brain being cut off. He still had the wherewithal to say he's fine and that he wan't out when Simon was pointing at him.

    What’s the time frame then for a ref to make his decision ? If this is between rounds I have no problem, but the fight had ended. “Can’t be saved by the bell” yet the ref didn’t make a call at the bell, didn’t make one within the first 5 seconds after the bell, no call was made visible to anyone so I don’t understand how they came to his ruling. Not to mention it’s a Technical submission not a TKO which is what hey ruled it.

    @chaelsonnen I disagree about kevin lee deserving title shot over alvarez or porier , hr missed weight and barboza made an error letting lee clinch after concussive knock out kick. Its a fact the man that misses weight and still gets to fight has a 80% better chance to win , fresher in the later rounds like #5. Barboza really needs to work on killer instict , a knee would have sealed the deal , some refs would have stopped the fight on chicken dance like alan joubon/nelson fight

    Look no further than Matt Hughes vs. Carlos Newton. Technically Newton won the fight before Matt went unconscious and slumps to his left slamming Newton's head into the mat as a result. The history still shows Matt as the victor and new champion but by these rules today applied to this fight Newton wins because it was the fact that he choked Matt unconscious that led to Matt dumping him on his head. Matt went on to beat Newton clean in the rematch but he should have got the win on that night or the fight should have been called a double TKO.

    I looked up the fight and that doesn't look like an effective choke to me. It looks like a half-assed choke from an awkward position, and a guy who doesn't know what to do. So you get this weird scenario of the guy figuring out how to receive just enough oxygen to stay borderline conscious, but he's in that state of deprived oxygen for so long (whereas in a full choke, things get stopped immediately, so your brain is only losing oxygen for a little while) that he probably braindamaged himself.

    I can understand if the rule is you cannot be saved by the bell. But why aren’t these refs competent enough to recognize a person is out or not. And then they say he’s out when he is out of the choke. Do you expect a person to spring right up after holding there breath for that long. Of course your gonna sit there and breath. The only reason this is being discussed is because Ricky said” he’s out.” There would be no discussion if he never said that. Then people are acting if he didn’t respond right after that. Look these commissions and refs have to have a unionized rule set thru all 50 states. Cause there is no reason Shaun O’Malley is able to win after fucking up his leg but merab isn’t.

    I had to search for this and it looks clear to me that he was not unconscious at all. Not even close. Awkward position so I don’t think he bothered trying to get his arm up because he didn’t think it would work. That choke was sunk in pretty good and he was just trying to wait for the bell. And he succeeded. And after the fight he kinda lays there but moves his head quick so they don’t question him being out again. He was just resting. Exhausted. The fight was over. And before he even had a fucking chance to get up “doctors” come and lay him down. He was a tough motherfucker and resisted being choked out. Never was unconscious and I don’t think it was even close. www.foxsports.com/ufc/video/1216453699641

    Genuine question here: does "defend yourself at all times" apply when you're being choked like that? All he was doing was trying to tell the ref that he wasn't unconscious. He seemed unable to defend the choke, so should it have been called for that reason?

      Tom True but if the choke is not actually choking him out then he’s not taking any damage, so nothing to intelligently defend against.....

      If he isn't losing consciousness then he is either defending intelligently or the choke isn't deep enough

    Holmes was hand kicking as she was chocked out by Tate. Same difference here. Also, while his eyes were open they were towards the back of his head and lifeless. After a second or so of the chock being released he reacted. But I think for all intents and purposes the bout was over but still ongoing due to the rule and thus the fighter lost the fight via chock at the bell... two cents :)

    *Fighters know better than to let their arms go limp when in a choke!*
    This isn't the first shit decision and it won't be the last but it's the FIGHTERS' fault because they know better. Tough luck buddy! You lost!

      Rageoholic Sr That’s an invalid argument. If it were a real fight, Dvalishvil would’ve killed him earlier in the fight, because he was dominating him the entire time.
      There are many fights and rounds that end with someone in trouble. You can’t say that lost a fight based on that. Check out Mighty Mouse vs Ian Mcall for reference.

    Merab was out from the takedown, regained consciousness and got choked out. His body was twitching but he was out. I still think he deserved to win because the fight was not stopped but he was 100% out.

    • @Brantendo64
      @Brantendo64 6 років тому +1

      Mrgummiwurm I don’t see how you perceived that as twitching. He was moving his feet in a bicycle motion. Twitches are sporadic and stiff, not fluid motions.

    • @Mrgummiwurm
      @Mrgummiwurm 6 років тому +1

      CH 03 he was unconscious and his leg movements were convulsions. He was in and out of consciousness. I have a tough time seeing a Serra Longo fighter defending a choke by bicycling his legs. He was doing anything with his arms. Although someone goes out, it doesn't mean they can't move at all. I've seen it before with my own eyes and yeah I'll admit it sounds odd that he was bicycling his legs while unconscious but look at his arms man. No one defends a choke like that. Clearly out.

  • @4217sp
    @4217sp 6 років тому +4

    A TKO is fight over. You can argue that a choke is not the same as a strike to the head which is true but you said it yourself. His eyes were open and he was trying to get up but failing. To me that is a technical knockout, I can understand your argument but with what you’ve said and the rule in NJ I don’t see how a challenge would be successful. Open to people who know more to educate me though cause I’m no expert.

    • @TangoNevada
      @TangoNevada 6 років тому

      Calling it a TKO was a mistake. It was actually ruled (In the end) a Technical Submission. That just added to the confusion. But yeah, the guy was flaying just like Holy Holme when she went out. His leg was moving even after the ref stopped the fight and it did not look in any way shape or form voluntary. He went out. Exactly when can be debated, but he definitely went out (Certainly at 56 seconds) but more certainly at some point during that choke. Even if he kicked back in, that doesn't matter.

    • @4217sp
      @4217sp 6 років тому

      Tango Nevada I wasn’t aware aware it was ruled a technical submission in the end. I feel like the difference between the two is splitting hairs to be honest. I just don’t feel like he has a case for appeal. Thank you for the information

    • @TangoNevada
      @TangoNevada 6 років тому

      I don't think he has a case either. But the difference is a TKO is typically caused by strikes and a TS would be because of a choke or joint lock etc. That's the only part they got wrong at the end,

    Fight's are often stopped by tko when a guy is completely conscious and simply not INTELLIGENTLY defending himself. Kicking his legs while his arms are laying limp does not count as intelligent defense. He clearly went out on the takedown and came to once his unconscious body was swept into a mounted guillotine. Once there his arms are limp and his legs are kicking involuntarily (much like when Holly Holm punched when Meisha choked her unconscious). The arguments here really make me question the MMA community as it seems to be split with idiots out there questioning/arguing people like John McCarthy and Goddard that he was in fact "conscious." The kicking was a primal movement that his body instinctually did to get out of danger and he kept doing it for a good 2 seconds after the fight ended before he SEMI came to. He couldn't even stand up at the end of the fight and had to be laid down so he wouldn't just crumble paralyzed... He could have seriously died or became a vegetable in there if that fight went longer as he wasn't fighting the choke. Shame on the referee for not stopping the fight as soon as he stopped INTELLIGENTLY defending himself and shame on the fighter for not recognizing a lack of consciousness when there was ZERO resistance against the choke.

    • @ifhedieshedies4496
      @ifhedieshedies4496 6 років тому

      Right at around 30 seconds he came back to and only gave what MIGHT have been a thumbs up before his arm went completely limp again (assuming his arm didn't involuntarily make a semi-fist when it was raised by the ref). How the fuck was he conscious if he wasn't fighting the hands. Have you ever been in a mounted guillotine or any choke for that matter? Let me know how splaying your arms out and kicking your legs like a newborn works as the defense. Merab should have lost because he was ko'd and then was not intelligently defending himself. The ref says to the fighters in the back if he stops intelligently defending himself he'll stop the fight. Laying there with your arms out, even if he was completely conscious, calls for the ref to end the fight. Simply because he was doing a worse job defending himself than a bjj white belt who has never seen any form of combat in his life.

      If he dies he dies
      1. Your opening statement invalidates your entire argument. “Fights are often stopped by TKO when....” the fight was not stopped. The bell rang.
      2. You can’t compare fluid motions, like the ones he was doing with his legs, with sporadic and momentary twitches like the ones Holly Holm did at the end of her fight. She literally punched the air for a second and went limp, as opposed to kicking for thirty seconds straight.
      Question the MMA community? Lol, come on dude. Get over yourself.

      1. My opening statement is a general statement. It does not describe what happened in the fight.
      2. Good form punches in the air are not fluid motions? Yes she only did it for a few seconds before going completely limp, but there are plenty of other fights you can point to in which the unconscious fighter is doing various things that seem conscious... like literally grappling the referee down. Also, if it was in fact so "fluid" (which it totally wasn't lol) and he was conscious, why did he continue kicking for a good 2 seconds after the fight was over?
      You're part of the problem lol, you're too dumb to even comprehend my initial statement "your opening statement invalidates your entire argument" in no way did my initial statement do that. To clarify, for you, all i was saying was that fight's are often stopped for much less than what we saw happen in the last minute of this fight. This could've been stopped when there were 45 seconds left in the fight when the ref saw a limp body get swept and not defend the choke at all.

    • @ifhedieshedies4496
      @ifhedieshedies4496 6 років тому +1

      +amtiessen Thank you for actually understanding this situation. This fight could have ended with a guy partially paralyzed and we're lucky it didn't. The fact that people are blaming this on the NJAC is a joke. If I had a twitter I'd be responding to every respected voice just to get my voice out there, but I don't. I'm shocked it's so hard for people to see that he was ko'd and tech. subbed and that the fight should have, and could have been stopped multiple times. Honestly I think if Simon just stood up and walked away at any point during the last 30 seconds they would have had to call the fight as Merab wasn't going to move.

    Unconsciousness is not a requirement for a tko. What a strange fight. I don't think he was out, but he was damn close. I give the ref the benefit. Dudes head was purple. He couldn't have continued another 2 secs.
