    It's a ballsy movie. It was almost guanteed to divide audiences (and this reaction is a good example),but I think it pays off well.
    I fully agree that the final 1/4 feels laboured and is definitely less interesting, but its a well constructed plot; and the ending packs a powerful emotional punch.
    I've been a Bond fan for fifty years,and I think this one generally works well. Not as good as Casino Royale,but a strong showing; and I think Fleming would have approved of the ending - he did it himself in one of his books,after all.

    This reaction offers a perfect example of why Hollywood suits don't want directors/writers/actors to take risks and just want to feed us the same stuff over and over and over again.

    I've enjoyed your reactions to these Bond movies, and your knowledge of the genre and character, along with your senses of humour, which have made your reactions great fun to watch.
    Personally, Roger Moore was my Bond (I was just a bit too young to remember Sean Connery's Bond the first time round), and I still think The Spy Who Loved Me is one of the best of the franchise - I can still remember sitting in the cinema and watching Moore's Bond skiing off the edge of a mountain and then the Union Jack parachute opening, followed by John Barry's trumpets, which made the entire audience stand and cheer; and of course the Carly Simon theme tune was a classic.
    You Only Live Twice was another great Connery Bond movie, which gave me a lifelong love for Tokyo and Japan.
    I think by the time Timothy Dalton came along I was probably into other things; and I was never into Brosnan's Bond - he wore a Seiko and drove a BMW, FFS!
    The casting of Daniel Craig was a huge gamble that paid off in spades, as we saw a return of the 'thug in a Savile Row suit', and given that the bar had been raised to another level by the Bourne franchise, they had to up their game, which they did splendidly.
    It'll be interesting to see who the new Bond will be - maybe a black guy? What do you fellows think? Are we ready for a black Bond? Or should the producers stick with the familiar, white and dry Brit?
    I'm looking forward to seeing your reactions to many more great movies, and maybe suggesting a few myself.
    Anyway, cheers from your new subsciber in the UK.

      The Spy Who Loved Me was everything to me, when I saw it as a kid back in the late 70's. I wish Bond movies would go back to that style.

    The more I think about this movie since I saw it (and being a lifelong bond fan), the more I think the things DC and Barbara Brocolli pushed for (him dying being the main one) which were meant to make the film more important in the series, actually makes this film less important - and ultimately makes Craig’s run a pointless endeavour. You can effectively sideline it to its own universe and carry the series on as it was with a new actor

    • @iansmith9279
      @iansmith9279 2 години тому

      Oh,I think that was exactly the idea,and exactly what they'll do.
      The Craig era can probably best be defined as 'alternate universe Bond'.

    • @Mrgarethw
      @Mrgarethw 2 години тому

      @@iansmith9279100%. It also sours the other Craig movies for me more than if they’d left this one open ended. To be honest we always knew they existed parallel because of the things that didn’t line up (Judy Dench’s M carry over, him effectively having two Db5s etc) but i could forgive all of that. I think BB just got too enamoured with Craig and his creative control took over the franchise - and not for the better

  • @andrewroberts299
    @andrewroberts299 38 хвилин тому

    I’ve never felt the love for Craig’s last four Bond films. Those films became too much of a soap opera, with each one delving more into Bond’s personal life than the film before it. Only Casino Royale stood out for me, and that was down to the fact that it was based on the first James Bond novel, which only showed that the scriptwriters couldn’t write an original story as good and absorbing as Ian Fleming could!
    Once the producers got back the rights to use Blofeld and his SPECTRE organisation again, they forced the scriptwriters on SPECTRE to tie in all of the previous 3 Bond films with it, just so Blofeld could come up with his diabolical plot of destroying Bond, because his father favoured Bond over him! The producers wanted everyone to think that all 5 films had always been planned to be linked together, but that wasn’t true.
    It was this Bond film, Craig’s last, where things really got out of hand. To get Craig back for his fifth and last Bond film, the producers were willing to pay Craig the $120M he wanted to star in it, as well as giving him enough creative control where he wanted James Bond killed off! How conceited must Craig have been, to think that by killing Bond off on his watch it would mean no more Bond films for another actor to replace him?
    Once again NTTD lives up to its 3 previous poor Bond films with yet another lacklustre villain, boring set pieces and stunts, and trite dialogue. Oh, and to make sure the wokeness is ramped up to 11 this time, the producers/scriptwriters bring in a female MI6 agent who just happens to carry the 007 licence to kill prefix! So move over Bond, you’re being replaced by a younger, sexier model and all that’s left for you to do is go off and die somewhere! Which he did!
    Killing Bond was the most stupidest idea ever. Ok, he’s played by a different actor each time, but all of them (before Craig was cast) were playing the same character, James Bond. So from Dr. No through to Live and Let Die, through to The Living Daylights and finally Die Another Day, it was all the same time line for Bond to inhabit. That all changed with Casino Royale being Bond’s origin story as 007. It allowed the producers to do a separate timeline in which they could do anything they liked.
    IMO it would have been better to have made Casino Royale as just another Bond film, following on from Die Another Day, and with a new actor playing Bond. The scriptwriters could have removed all references to Bond being a rookie and the audience would have just felt they were watching just another new film in the Bond series.
    If there is going to be a Bond 26, the producers and scriptwriters are going to have to do a hard reboot to start the series off again, as if the last 5 Craig Bond films didn’t exist. Personally, as a Bond fan of 53 years standing, if the next film is going to pander again to the wokeism and producer Barbara Broccoli’s feminine agenda, then count me out.
    Bond has always stood as an author’s fantasy of a man wanting to be a secret agent, fighting nefarious villains who want to harm the world, with a beautiful voluptuous woman by his side. We had that for 40 years before the Craig era began and the series was doing very nicely, thank you. It’s time we got back to the good old days, although in all honesty, I wouldn’t hold your breath that this scenario will ever happen again!

    It was a decent enough movie, but that ending was very ballsy. Never having killed of Bond before. Just treating him like the same guy played by someone else. Where as Craig's Bond had a full on arc, a start middle and end. All films linked and following Bond from the start as a 00 agent to his death was certainly different.

      To be fair the studio didn't want to kill bond, Daniel Craig pushed for his character to die, as a way to give a proper end to the character and to ensure that he couldn't return for a future film

    • @SirHilaryManfat

      I think the whole ending is the reason why Danny Boyle stepped away from directing it. Not confirmed, but he did state that he had "artistic differences" with regards to the movie, so it's most probably that.
