Hello again Folk Friends! I meant to say at the start of this video that there is an easy way to remember the order of the modes which is "I Don't Punch Little Men After Lunch" (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian)!
Here's an index for this week's video in case you want to skip ahead or come back to a specific section later on:
    0:31 - Intro
1:51 - How the major scale is formed (TTSTTTS)
4:28 - Working out key signatures
7:42 - Using the circle of 5ths to memorise key signatures
10:22 - Why do some keys have flats instead of sharps?
14:00 - Key signatures you need to remember for folk music
    14:57 - How chords work
16:20 - Intervals in triads (basic chord construction)
18:21 - Complete list of the triads that fit in a major key
22:34 - Introducing the Amazing Mode Wheel from Finale Guitar- a much easier way to understand and memorise key signatures and chord options.
Don't forget to like this video, subscribe and click the little bell to be notified when I post more free tutorials!

@@folkfriend i may be taking you up on those theory lessons soon. I'm just getting back into playing guitar (after 30 years) and this time around I want to do it right. I want to learn everything I possibly can, and be able to actually apply it.

Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle
Then for flat keys it’s just the other way: Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles Father.

    Hi Nye,
I have had trouble figuring out the mode/key of a tune I didn't know at Irish sessions.
So for instance with 2 sharps # to figure out weather it is D Maj or E Dorian one just need to look at the 1st note, right?
So a Dorian tune using 2# shall start with the note E and a major Ionian shall start with a D.
    Am I correct?
Thanks a million for you kind an fairly clear lesson.
    God bless

Hello! The first note is not that good an indicator, the easiest one to look at is the last note of the tune which is almost always the key note. A better way is to trust your ears. Listen for the feel of the tune and try to recognise the mode that way- then you can confirm by checking against the key signature :).

@@folkfriend Thanks for the tip Nye 😉
So, almost always the last note?
What does "revolve" mean in music theory?
Sorry to ask much, but a few years ago I played a few times with a harper and guitarist and also a singer.
He wasn't too bad, but he did the 7 years of music academy solfège be and was never taught harmony or the accompaniment theory. 😰
I know how to read the scores, enough for Trad Music though, but only know some harmony rules.
Thanks a lot for the help. 🙂
I reckon Irish trad sounds nicer on your acoustic guitar than the electric you played with on other videos.
      What model is she?
I got a few Guilds and 1 Aria

@@Melvorgazh I think you mean "resolve". In the context of Irish music this is when tension which has been set up in the melody or harmony is "resolved" by ending up back on the key note or chord. If you're interested in what actually creates this tension I do actually give lessons on the physics of harmony via Zoom- it's a pretty fascinating topic!
In some of the older videos I had to play things on the electric in order to loop them! I'll be revisiting them in the not too distant future and doing it properly haha. My main electric guitar is actually my Vintage Mimi Fox hollow body! It's only a cheapish old thing but I love it. I also have a Telecaster which comes out for soloing duty occasionally...
Have a look at my "kara-folky" tune playalongs series if you haven't already, there are nice slow tune loops played on tin whistle with on screen guitar chords on there for you to practice along with!
      Thanks :)

      @@folkfriend Hi again Nye, oops!
      Yes, I meant resolve, sorry.
      I see, for the loop.
Very interesting about what is creating the tension.
      Shall look at your videos.
I stopped the guitar for 3 years until a few months ago, after watching Shannon and Matt Heaton and TUNE SUPPLY Live session videos ☺️
      Have a nice weekend, man.
