  • Juan Soto is having a true career year for the New York Yankees at 25 years young. This type of player seems to come around once a generation. There are a few other collectors who are still not quite sold on Juan Soto and are worried that he may be too one dimensional to maintain value. Our friend, Eephus Pitch, raised this question on Instagram, and we wanted to do our best to debate if Juan Soto Cards are worth buying!

This channel is a true service to baseball fans and card collectors. Of the 5 interchangeable personalities, no one person’s ego ever gets too big and each of you have your own spin on a given topic that adds value/perspective. The content is targeted to a specific topic and not just rambling/hanging out trying to make up content on the fly. I really appreciate the group here and enjoy every video posted.

I compare Soto to Frank Robinson who was a negative defender but one of the greatest hitters of all time. I also PC both of them. Robinson won his first MVP at 25 and Soto is putting up MVP numbers this year but this year is crazy with Judge, Henderson, Witt putting up monster numbers. Robinson only had one 40+ home run season but had such a long consistent career and that is the downside of Soto.
No one collects Robinson which is stupid because he was so good.

Great video. There are many Soto stats (at this point in his career) that place him on lists with all time greats in the sport. His advanced stats are incredible and certainly worthy of the generational title. I think the next 10 years will really determine his following after his career is over. I’m excited to join the ride

theres a big distinction between to be made between Betts and Soto imo. Betts will be looked at as an all time great baseball player and Soto will be looked at as a all time great hitter. Like Willy Mays was an all time great baseball player and you could say Ted Williams was an all time great hitter. In regards to collectability I think theres a lot more variables that go into that. What’s so great about Soto is that his skills, while he’s not the fastest or best defender, will last awhile. Injuries won’t affect him as much, and I could see him simply mashing until he’s 36+. Be basically David Ortiz into his 30s.

Juan Soto is a much better player than the comparisons -- his plate discipline should get him into the HoF twenty years from now. He's 25 -- his career numbers now project very well into the future. He might be a Generational Player -- he could fall off, but the improvement in his production should make him collectible for the years to come. Yes, 2018 was massively overprinted -- collectors should be selective but they should have a least 3-5 of his PSA 10 RCs. Great subject! 🤓⚾️

PSA designed 2018 and beyond as Ultra Modern -- privately meaning the start of the Over Production Era. Yes, every year after it was overprinted -- 2024 Print Runs are crazy. Hits, HR, Walks - only one person has put up those numbers - Barry Bonds. World Series champion with already 7 post season HR's and for me the Post season MATTERS. He is well loved by his peers, fans, and the media and that MATTERS too. Do yourself a favor and go search Bonds who is not in the HOF sold comps, it will blow your mind. Great video. The introduction keeps characterizing Soto as a 1-tool player, but isn’t he actually a 2-tool player? Two of the five tools are for hitting, and Soto hits for both average plus power. It’s not like he’s Joey Gallo who can hit 30 HR’s and bat .180. Soto can hit .320 with 35 HR’s….

Enjoyed the discussion! The Witt comparison is interesting. Witt may never have the WAR of Soto, but even if the 2020 season was a full season it’s looking like 7 years for Soto to get to 1000 hits. It’s looking like 5 and a half for Witt. They’re very different players. Almost complete opposite players.

As a fan and Soto being my favorite active player, I agree with mostly everything you all said here. He is young and started early, had early postseason success and big moments, and has not only the advanced statistics on his side with WRC+ and OPS+ as well as WAR, but his counting stats for his age are great. Will most likely eclipse 200 career home runs and almost 1K hits before 26. Resigning long term with my Yankees will help tremendously. With that said, I will say if Griffey’s key moment is beating the Yankees once to close them out, I don’t really consider that huge. No titles, a lackluster postseason career (yes, it’s a team game but he had some stacked M’s teams in the 90’s). The Kid is collected because he was the face of baseball, and had swag and the image to back it up.

There are 2 separate and occasionally overlapping conversations here. Baseball talent/production and hobby collectability. As Chris pointed out, hype unfortunately accounts for too large a portion of the collectability part. It's why Mickey Mantle is so much more valuable than Willie Mays... a superior all around player. Juan Soto is an amazing hitter and has a great personality, but in a real life baseball sense, he is not a Mookie Betts, Griffey, Mays, Witt (this year) when impacting winning. Line up 9 Mookie Betts or Bobby Witts (can you tell who I buy) on a diamond versus 9 Juan Sotos, and the Mookies and Bobby Baseballs would destroy the Juans. Plus, as I've told Phil before, "Walks aren't sexy." They do juice the numbers though. Also, there is "buyer bias" to push certain narratives. Nobody likes losing money, and there is a lot of hobby money in Soto.

is frank thomas beloved outside of white sox fans? hard for me to tell because im from and live in the chicago area. but white sox fans LOVE frank thomas. he was their guy for 15 years. i think thats his big collecting appeal. he played with one team for so long while also being consistently good. by the time thomas bounced around between a few teams his status as a sox legend was already cemented. and i think that’s his collectibility. being far and away the best player in the history of the white sox franchise.
also. the fact that soto has already played for 3 teams makes his cards less desirable for me. i’ve pulled some nice cards of him and just sent them all to comc. like, he’s a mercinary. gross

Trouts OBP is lower, RBI is lower, Soto will pass him in homers as well this year for age 25 season! I also believe Soto will be way less injury prone than Trout! I wouldn't say Trout is so much better😮 and Trout didn't have a Covid year in his age 21 season!

Trout was better, not is better. Trout’s not a 5 tool player currently. Even when he was “back” and his “old self” this year he was batting .220. But he’s definitely superior in the strikeout category compared to Soto. Trout was fantastic, but unless something changes, his legacy will be a massive what if to go along with no gold gloves and one career post season hit. Notice I used stats and facts, hopefully that doesn’t make me a hater.
