Prove me wrong.
I've been really struggling with painting recently. I've been unable to get any motivation to paint and absolutely not desire to do anything to get through my pile of shame and get a Warhammer 40k army painted up. Whether it's my Thousand Sons, Drukhari or Raven Guard successors, I just did not want to do it.
That all changed when my fragile ego was even slightly challenged.

This 'discipline' thing sounds like an absolute hoax
You can be easily disciplined when your "fun tank" is filled up.
Having ADHD means that your fun tank is being drip fed and never gets full. Your mind is always up to seeking stimulation.
@@Deus888 lol that’s not discipline though. Discipline is doing something even when you lack the motivation because you know it needs to be done.
Problem with applying it to painting minis is that there’s really no ‘need’ for it lol the benefit is that you painted a mini, and it can look great and all but unlike exercise there isn’t any real consequence for doing or not doing it.
With exercise you benefit from better health and greater physical ability. And not exercising sends you backwards undoes your progress and gains
With painting minis there is no punishment, the benefit is a painted mini which is nice but if you didn’t paint the mini. Well nothing changes you just still have an unpainted mini lol
Edit: lol sorry about the repetition, wrote this whole looking over shoulder at work
It absolutely is, total pyramid scheme. I tried discipline once and I've regretted it ever since.
@@woodlefoof2 discipline is an emotion. You can understand that you have to do something, but you need emotions to actually do it. When your brain undermines your tries so the time it's hard to feel disciplined.

The most realistic youtuber out here, doesn't have dozens of painting, basing, or strategic videos. Just a man like us all going through life with hobbies. And a man named Steve tossing him around like a rag doll. Best laugh all week, love you and your vids.
I was told "there ain't no way you can lift that weight" cause it was 5kg above my usual max. I flipped the off and did it anyway. Spite's the best
For me and my friends, we don't call my unbuilt/unpainted models my "Pile of Shame". We call it my "Vault of Self-Loathing". I have SO many armies across a few different systems that are mostly unbuilt, so I understand the struggle.
Because I also struggle with doing consistent hobby work. My latest solution to this has been setting weekly hobby goals. I lost the habit somewhere in my 2nd year of hobbying, and bringing it back has done well for me so far. So I hope that helps you out, Paul!
Spite recently helped me start up a small side business. It started when I just wanted to print my own decals for my minis. I wanted WHITE ones which, as I found out, come with caveats and difficulties and can't normally be printed. But I didn't want to settle for buying either expensive Forgeworld sheets or GW upgrade kits. So out of spite at GW and not wanting to give them the satisfaction of making me buy expensive sheets of stickers I instead spent even MORE money to buy myself my own laser printer and specialty white toner. Then, figuring I already had the stuff needed, I went ahead and made my own Etsy store moooostly to try and make back some of the money I spent. I created a bunch of different designs and tossed them on it. I've sold a few hundred dollars worth of decal sheets, made my investment back, and now have a nice lil bit of extra spending money.
You made a business and you didn't even shill it at the end of your comment? Let's see those stickies bro!
Love the vibes of this, and it's nice hearing someone else talk about the struggles of ADHD in such a personable and normalized manner.
Either way, with this trick, I'd love for you to read up on PDA (pathological demand avoidance, not public displays of affection). Because from personal experience, this seems like peak PDA behaviour to me. "Oh, you're telling me I CANNOT do this? Ok, I wasn't gonna do it, but now I WILL DO IT!"
I just primed my whole pile of shame because winter is coming. Now this video was just what I needed to motivate me to finish them all...
I've found painting the corpses on some decorative bases as my friends armies has helped me get them to paint their dudes; they don't want me to have more painted models of their faction than they do!
I have already ordered 300 PTS (which will need to be washed) and the infiltrators of which I will need to turn into a veteran vanguard on the Jump pack. Your video gave me the motivation to finish all this in 4 weeks
If anything I apologize for my English
my co-worker got me into Warhammer recently and I'm furiously painting through my first army to get it done because I told him I'd never get a TRUE pile of shame like he has. Honestly it's a great motivator.
As the person who got Cloud and Barrett to level 99 in the first reactor in Final Fantasy 7, I can confirm that spite is the most powerful motivator.
Welp, that settles it!
This week, I will build AND paint all forty thousand Warhammers!
What's helped me recently is I've completely sworn off batch painting. It took me 2 months to paint 10 gargoyles but I can knock out a single gaunt in like 2 hours and have a much better time doing so.
I can kind of see how having to paint an entire load of models can sap the hobby motivation. It's like chipping away at an enormous edifice. Whereas painting in small batches (or single models, apparently?) gives little shots of dopamine at regular intervals.
Thanks for insulting me. It actually made me feel motivated.
My Blood Angels army has been in my pile of shame for over 10 years
One of my favorite moments from the Simpsons is when Homer needs to land a plane because the pilots are incapacitated. He calls his life coach, and says "I need to learn how to land a plane!"
His coach says "you know why I know you'll land that plane? Because I heard some guy say you couldn't."
Homer proceeds to say "WHAT?! I'll show that guy!" and does it flawlessly.
I painted my brothers entire 2000 point army after a very long time of not painting anything, then, immediately afterwards, I got suggested this video, and I got to say that that’s very bad timing on the universe’s part
I can hang my hat on the fact I have at least build and primed everything I own. Actually painting it, another story. But recently I've tricked some friends into joining the hobby, and seeing their painting journey has been a bit of inspiration for me to at least get a fully painted army onto the table. I've managed to make some decent progress into my DG army the past few months. Lack of time is my greatest enemy.
Spite is gonna get me through the rest of my Sisters of Silence
“oh you wanna go?”
*looks at pile of shame*
“shit, he’s right”
I just stopped buying things. Then focused on particular army projects. Now I no longer have a pile of shame. It was little in the first place because poor though. And only buying armies I'm actually very passionate about helped.
I can't tell you *just* how amazing it is to go through that journey every single time I buy a box. Buying, constructing and converting, basing, priming, painting and only *then* getting a new one is so satisfying.
I think the thing with ADHD is "just stop doing X" is as hard as "Just do Y". Basically the thing that dispenses happy chemicals in our heads for completing minor tasks is fundamentally broken so with ADHD it takes a comparatively herculean effort to not take the quickest route possible to that sweet, sweet dopamine we have so little of. And of course buying the new shiny thing is a very reliable source of dopamine.
"Spite" I'm glad to see it working for others too, trying to explain that to 'Disciplined' people is a real headache.
I got a straight A's report card in my final year just because my friend said he will get one. Couldnt let him beat me. Best most productive rivalry I ve ever had, we really pushed one another.
This inspired me to get up go to my pile of shame take out a sprue and put and it back down to go scroll on my phone.
Spite is why I'm making another Diorama!
Thwomp is perhaps the best visual expression of how it feels to look at my growing collection of scratch-built models that still don't even have primer on them. Just a coat of dust.
This eventually gets to be replaced by the impact of l
You: "I bet you can't get those models painted."
Me: You would be correct.
Honestly spite is like the Warp. It’s a negative concept however it can be harnessed correctly to achieve a certain goal
Great video dude, genuinely made me laugh. Oh, and those minis you've painted are great too!
"creative outlet" I have just died. you have killed me sir.
bro just lit a fire he didnt expect. now he's gonna be competing with everyone
Spite plus a deadline is a powerful combination!
oh hey I'm thaineofthebadmoon! thank you for posting my Ghaz! glad you liked it!
Invokes rage and grabs a paintbrush!! 😂😂
Funnily enough, Spite was the reason I _started_ my Fallen army. This was back in 9th ed, when Fallen _technically_ had rules, but just barely. In this case, spiting GW for leaving the renegade Dark Angels in a limbo state got me to collect and paint them.
As for what gets me to actually paint, it's podcasts. I follow a fair few of them (Well There's Your Problem, Kill James Bond, Lions Led By Donkeys, It's Probably (Not) Aliens, etc). But since I get very bored listening at my desk anyway, if I have nothing to do with my hands, I put them on only when I'm prepared to start painting. It's a good reward for doing the work, as I get to keep up with a bunch of folks I like. (Most UA-cam videos, which I also watch a lot of, tend to have too much going on visually. So I'm missing something if I watch that).
Another thing that sometimes gets me going is making a model purchase. I just snagged a previous Age of Sigmar starter set (Tempest of Souls, for those interested) for cheap. Which made me anxious about having left my latest batch of Fallen half-finished since before the holidays. Hence, why I'm getting into the final stages of painting them as of this writing. Have to clear out some of my Pile before the box gets here.
I am perfectly balanced
The Man: "I bet you can get those models painted!"
Me: sighs.... cries in corner... :(
I'll show you pal, I'm going to drink every ounce of paint in my office.
3:03 A wholesome example of "boys will be boys"
I find that I usually am pretty lax when it comes to painting, BUT if I have an event coming up ITS GO TIME. One goes through phases of motivation
Pile of future potential.
This way I feel less guilty adding to it like a dragon hoarding treasure.
I’m repainting my chaos cultists out spite!
3:17 impressive move
Fairplay that techmarine looks sick
*assembles his airbrush with malicious intent* O.O
well damn, what a motivational speech. I might do some painting this week. or not. that remains to be seen
This is gonna be such a fun little community challenge
The best way I've found to get through a pile of shame is to do something related to it every day, even if its just doing one detail on a squad. Just keep doing it, and keep the momentum up, best way to do this is if you have space, keep a painting spot set up. You won't paint many models fast, but at least you're doing something, and I've found that makes it feel like I'm getting through what I've got to paint. Also I guess re-framing unpainted models as gift for your future self, that one day you can paint something (which is supposed to be enjoyable) and not have to spend any more money
I've been going with pile of fun instead of pile of shame. After all, I do enjoy the painting aspects of the hobby so this pile of Tyranids I bought is going to be future fun.
.... yeah I used to think the same thing. Then the company I worked for closed. Can't buy new minis til new job. So managed to almost devour my entire pile of shame, also fixed my fdm printer because I couldn't get new terrain. Nearly finished painting my entire hive city project. Started experimenting w/ electronics and LEDs into my city, and want to add holograms to shine the emperors love in the city.
So glad I hoarded plastic for so long, its kept me running for the past few weeks.
Spite is why I get out of bed in the morning
This disci of pline thing sounds like a new character model to me
I just do it at my own pace. No need to rush through something I enjoy.
It’s crazy how much spite can motivate us adhd peeps, I once got into running and exercise over the course of 2 years and got to the point where I was able to do a 5 minute mile all because I was furious at people and wanted to look better to spite them lol
Damn, you did get some fire in my belly man. Good job!
For me, I can’t stand myself having an unfinished model on the tabletop. So everytime I have a unit I want to use in a game I have lined up, productivity goes through the roof.
spite did help me get a cosplay together once
spite and contempt did help me though some severe mental health times (but not all of them
ah yes, spite, the truest mover of worlds
I lol'ed but yeah, spite is a hell of a motivator.
One of the funniest ways I spited someone for 40k: we finished a long and drawn out match to a tie. But the new tournament rules give the battle-ready army the tie break
In lifting this is the equivalent of break up gains
Spite is the best fuel for projects.
Thanks Paul!
Hope you had a nice day!
Real talk man.
Get yourself an airbrush. Prime, basecoat - slap on a wash and there. That is a model mostly painted. From there just start batch painting the details and you are absolutely done.
Bought an airbrush two weeks ago. So far 1.2k models painted and ready to go with about three hours a day worth of work.
Goddamn it Paul. I guess Ill paint those Grey Knights.
What motivates me to paint is knowing I have an upcoming game.
That’s about the only thing that does it.
I'm really good about building my minis but after 600 guardsmen my willingness to paint is gone.
I once showed 3 terminators and got called last for not drilling barrel holes so I stayed up till 12:30 at night painting the last two out of spite
In my experience, there are three things that prevent me from painting. 1) I just have other things to do that I find more fun and enjoyable. 2) I feel like I am not skilled enough to do the model justice. 3) I do not feel contented with my scheme/ recipe and I don't wanna continue in case I feel like changing things up.
I love the "Spite is the greatest motivator" and I hope I feel that one day.
You’re clearly the heel in the Paul/Steve storyline
is that a Feirros with a jetpack? what glorious madness, that model is so sick
It is! It's awesome and fits perfectly into the Screaming Ravens vibe
You're absolutely right I won't do anything except maybe buy more models
You're right, I can't finish the models. I won't complete any project. I'm a complete failure.
I recently managed to build some of my renegade guard. Pain them? No. But we all start somewhere.
Spite is indeed the greatest motivator see you in two weeks :)
Honestly when I feel motivated enough to paint, I paint what I think looks cool. Its tempting to want to paint something for your next match but if its something you hate painting (I hate battleline...) you'll paint nothing rather than something. And one day you might feel motivated to paint something you hate.
I found a solution to my pile of shame, I sold it. I had unfinished admech army for over a year didnt enjoy painting it. Currently im working on seraphon and its a blast I enjoy painting every model and dont feel the intimidation or dread
I only have one more in my pile of shame. :)
Today i have start my pile of shame
Dude you always make my day. 😂 Love your videos. Super funny stuff. 😅
The fact that this video hit so close to home pisses me off lol. I have all the motivation at work but when I actually get out after my 15 hour day it kinda dwindles to yeah not today.
No, no, you're right. Spite is the single most powerful human emotion. Too bad it's usually used for ill.
I just watched this video, and I was already working on a kill team for funsies, but you know what? *Now I'll have to finish 2!!*
For anyone who is curious I am painting a compendium Ork and a Compendium Tactical marine kt so I can play mini dawn of war
Best trick I've heard yet!
Thanks, Paul. I won't be painting anything this month, but at least i got enough motivation for now to build some Marines
You've just picked a fight your going to lose! I bet my pile of shame is the biggest and I'll get something done!
Very good video will get my Court of Crimson King finished this month, most of them incluing Magnus is done just the second squad needs doing, gold is on just blue and silver needs adding
most of my army has been painted because my friends consistently would make fun of me for not having painted minis
I don't know how far it might progress, but... I'll try to force it. I haven't painted ANYTHING in my 5+ years of collection. Might not be the spiteful sort, but we'll see whether that challenge can at least motivate me to at the very least base paint what I've built.
Within four weeks...
21 minis in the pile of shame and I’m allowed to buy more minis…
Why do I feel personally attacked by this....
So I make models in blender and I love doing it but my motivation wavers. I've created a fuck ton of golden boys but I'll tell you what there is nothing that brings me more drive and truly pushes me than seeing someone else make a custode. doesn't matter if they're good or not it will push one to make and remake more and more until you look back and you realise that you've made 19 different generations on the same thing. spite is a very powerful tool for motivation especially when someone comes in and acts all superior about it
this is inspired and inspiring
A great ork once told me Grey is a colour, so all my armies are painted if i believe #hobbyAcks!
I also have adhd, but I'm disabled so I can't work, but I can paint while you work. And if I lose to you I have the "I'm disabled" excuse. I can't lose lol.
Tmi: when I was younger I used spite to keep from committing the un-alive
Welp as you described how steve helped you start weightlifting. This is how my discipline for painting works. Every friday evening is painting evening with the boys.
Bros makimg me wanna finish my world eaters squad and my imperial fists squad alomg with my nids
So true. My friend has a painting Instagram and twtich, it motivates me to paint. Wont be as good but he's not using enough retributer armour so he's obviously doing it wrong
The fact you posted someone elses Howling Griffons 1:38 and they look better than mine is sufficient motivation
