I ran this quest last week and made Caer Konig my starting town. This small outpost was amazing for the party to experiment with their group tactics. I must admit that the emphesis should really lie on stealth, because if they are not carefull; the party will be wiped. My party was lvl 2 by the way and did pretty fine
Invaluable is how I would call these videos. Have been using them to flesh out each of the towns and related quests before I sit down to plan the parties encounters.
Really well explained. I gave the hook for this as the session ender of this weeks session, this was one I flagged alongside Toil & Trouble (Easthaven) as must play for parties for advancing overall adventure story knowledge.
The best split-second decision I’ve ever made in a campaign was making the leader _not_ Nildar.
They killed him- I blanked on his name and just called him someone clearly in charge of the Duergar- without any RP and then ended the session.
I wound up moving him to Caer Denival, since that town’s Duergar is unnamed and basically irrelevant. He was the first one downed, but my players were clever and specifically stabilized him mid combat to make sure they had a prisoner to question.
They then took him to the Cult at the town guard captain’s request, which gave them a logical reason to talk to the cult and set up the anti-Duergar stance of the Black Swords and the uneasy pact they had with the players.
Later, in East Haven, one player only survived because he yelled, “Nildar lives!” After being ambushed by Duergar when he went off along and wandered onto the Ferry. That led to a dramatic, _planned_ death of the character which was much more meaningful than just “the level 3 Warlock got ganked by like 6 Duergar and died alone, with no one to help him.”
Instead, the player- who admitted he’s not great at processing death and the characters death is going to be painful but well deserved- and I planned it so the Slaad inside him- he’d been a Slaad Host from the beginning- would burst out of him mid-combat as the party tried to rescue him.
90% of that was because Nildar _wasn’t_ in the outpost.
Wild to think about.
LOVE these videos. The perfect overview and amount of detail for DMs to get a good, quick idea of what's in the quest. Thanks much!
Really loving these videos. I find them so helpful for really getting the flow of these adventures, in a way I didn't always quite get from reading the book. I haven't started this campaign yet but these videos will be a huge help. Keep up the great work.
You sound like a really good DM, mr SteelySam
Love it! So now that you have done all 10 towns and there quests, will you be going on to chapter 2?
Yes, the next video planned will be a video about transitioning to chapter 2 and a sort of checklist for the DM "if the party doesn't know/have this get it done before chapter 3" and after that a video I'll cover all the quest
