Thank you for this ranking. I really like "Lock Every Door" too, I just started with his books. My first was "The only one left", then "Lock Every Door", "Final Girls" and now on " The Last Time I Lied" I like the summary you gave of each book, it will help me choose the next one.
Hey, I'd say give him a try. It can't hurt. And everyone's opinion seems to differ. But the two most people seemed to enjoy are Lock Every Door and Home Before Dark. Both have spookier vibes so I'd say those are good places to start. 😉 Thanks so much for the support, Emily! Appreciate you. 🤗🖤🥰
Final Girls expectations: A tense thriller with a serial killer on the loose and a high body count Final Girls reality: our heroine doing lots of baking and dismissing Sam's red flags The House Across the Lake: With all the plot twists you could have chosen, Riley Sager, you went with "that". What the heck, man! Home Before Dark expectations: Should I be reading this at night? This might give me nightmares. Home Before Dark reality: zzzzz Survive the Night: WTH! but I was entertained the whole time Me doing the happy dance that you liked Lock Every Door. This is my favorite of his, too.
I appreciate your unpopular opinions. They’re genuine and not forced. I feel like a lot of people hate on popular things just to be different 🙄😂 Anyway, I agree with you on some of these. I still want to read House Across the Lake even though it sounds messy 😂 A video on how you review your books would be great! 🗝
love this video!! i’ve only read Home Before Dark & expected it to be more scary, but overall i did enjoy it. ✨i have read so many mixed reviews about his books!!! so i hesitate with what to read next.🔑 Lock Every Door & Survive the Night have my attention …🤔 we’ll see 💞
Thank you so much, Monique Michelle! With Riley Sager you just have to dive in and get the experience because I haven't heard many agree about his books. But I definitely think Lock Every Door and Survive the Night are good places to start. 😊
Even though we disagree on some of his books I found this video so entertaining! 😆 also kudos to you for continuing to read from him when so many of them just weren’t it for you. That’s impressive in and of itself! Lol
I loved Lock Every Door so much. It was my first and favorite also. I enjoyed several others but Home Before Dark and Final Girls are my next two in order. I still have to read Survive the Night and unsure about House Across the Lake.
Yes, Lock Every Door is the best to me! But it seems like everyone enjoys the paranormal elements he adds in so that's why I'm realizing he may not be the author for me. 🤔😁
Great video! I haven’t read Survive The Night or House Across The Lake yet. My favourite is Last Time I Lied, the last pages sealed the deal for me and I loved the atmosphere and the mystery. I adored his first four books, as a result I’m so scared to read the last two incase I hate them 🙃 I would be interested to see if I reread his books if my ranking or feelings would change.
I just found your page because of your review on The Only One Left (I felt EVERY EMOTION you mentioned LMAO. That man put like 8 twists in that book!!). I wanted to read more of his work but didnt know which one to read next, so i requested all his work on Libby. Thank God of this video because Lock Every Door just became available so that’s next! And I’ll probably read Survive the Night too since you liked that one…after that, Im done. I’ll take your word for the others! Lmao! Thank you so much for this video.
from favorite to least: 1. home before dark 2. final girls 3. lock every door 4. survive the night 5. the house across the lake haven't read and don't plan to read the last time i lied
Yes! I was hoping Lock Every Door would be number one! I read that book so fast. It was that good! By the way, I 100 percent agree with all these rankings and where you placed them
Thank you!!! Finally feeling validated in my dislike of Final Girls. I’m currently reading it, am at 46% and really struggling. If it wasn’t a library book I’d be throwing it across the room
I have never read any Riley Sager books. Okay so you have changed my mind about his books…lmao. So now I will read your 1-3 and not 4-6. Thank you so much for your vids, you are killing it.
I haven’t read his two older backlist titles yet, but my top 2 are definitely Home Before Dark and The House Across the Lake. Didn’t realize that they both had paranormal elements until you said that wasn’t your favorite in Sager! So that was interesting to recognize because I don’t read other paranormal books and maybe I need the training wheels version of it because I’m a big scaredy cat 😅😂 I did really enjoy Lock Every Door though. I was thinking about what you said on short chapters too, and I feel like thriller authors that can write in short chapters are so talented! Thinking about writing a whole damn book sounds crazy enough to me but getting that little “just enough of a mic drop” to make it a baby chapter over and over must be exhausting lol!
Yeah, I think that really makes a difference in whether you enjoy his books or not is if you like a paranormal or spooky element in your thrillers. So, now you know it's something you enjoy! 😁 And yeah nothing like short chapters. I love thriller authors who can do it well!
I have not only my coffee mug with me today for this, but also a full box of tissues for all my tears and a bandage for my broken heart 😂 In my ranking I also still have Lock Every Door as number one and Survive the Night as number 2. I still need to decide where to put House Across the Lake hahaha because that one still has me internally divided. Lock Every Door has one of my favorite plot twists. I did not see it coming and loved it.
😄 😄 😄 Kasha you always crack me up!!!! And yay we agree on #2 and #1! Hey, that's pretty good! I'll take it! 😁 Still can't wait to hear your thoughts on House Across the Lake. 👀
This was such a fun video. I love the vibe you put out. Lock Every Door was my first and favorite, too. The main character has a good reason for getting into the situation she did. In the rest of his books the main characters are, well, stupid. A murderer is on the loose, sure, I’ll get in a strange man’s car. Everyone in my camp cabin was murdered, let’s go back to be the art teacher. I grew up in a devil house, renovating sounds like a swell idea. I still can’t help reading all his books. Has anyone ever seen Riley Sager standing at a crossroads at midnight? Lol
Oh my god, Wendy Fairfull, you are so right! 😄😄😄 And yet, like you said, we keep reading. 🤔🤭 Also, thank you so much for the kind words! I appreciate it! 🖤
I know a lot of people didn't like House Across the Lake, but I actually loved it. It's my favorite so far but I have only read that one, Survive the Night, and Last Time I Lied (which is definitely at the bottom for me, which was disappointing since I know a lot of people love that one).
Oh wow! Well, since you write horror you probably enjoyed the paranormal aspects more than I did. I just haven't found a mix of thriller and paranormal that I like yet.
🗝 I've never read a thriller book, but I see that Lock Every Door is available on Libby (I just love the library😁), so I think I'd like to give it a shot!
Yeah, I DNF'd Final Girls too (and I actually like slashers). I did enjoy Lock Every Door and Last Time I Lied; haven't read the other 3 yet. I have pretty mixed feelings about Sager but I'm interested in what he's going to do next. 🗝️
Oh, I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who DNF'd Final Girls (though it's clear on Goodreads)! And I'm right there with you as far as mixed feelings for Riley Sager. We'll see what he does next. 👀😊
Ive now read Survive The Night and Home before dark, im planning to read lock every door next because of how much i enjoyed home before dark - id rate that at 5 stars. Survive the night wss an alright time waster for me but definitely not a 5 star read, its more a 3 star.
I was surprised recently when I got around to the audiobook for "Dark Matter" (Blake Crouch) and found that the audiobook was read by the same guy (Jon Lindstrom) who read the father's portion of "Home Before Dark"..,he does a great job on audiobooks IMO...thanks for the rankings on Sager...I have only consumed Home Before Dark and while it was OK, I really felt the ending was trite, messy and kind of ruined what had built up really well in the first 80% of the story...
I feel almost exactly the same way you do about Lock Every Door. I was so disappointed with Survive The Night - I so so wanted to love it but like you said - with such a small amount of characters... It was kind of obvious who the killer was x
I agree about home before dark! People still say it’s the best ghost story they’ve ever read and it just makes me sooo overly angry lol. I also agree with your number one pick :)
Awww thank you so much, a. g.! 🤗 Two of his books that most people seem to enjoy are Lock Every Door and Home Before Dark. Both have spooky vibes. So, I'd say if you want a slower, gothic type of read then go with Home Before Dark. And if you want something a little more fast paced than I'd recommend Lock Every Door. Happy reading! 📚😊
I feel like Riley Sager is one of the most polarizing authors ever, lol. People either rave about or hate his books. I really didn't like Lock Every Door but I've since learned that I just don't think I'm a thriller person so I guess within the world of thrillers, it's alright but yeah - not my jam lol. Thrillers to me are like you with romance 😂
So true, Mo Jordan! And you notice I'm reading less and less thriller these days. 👀 I think I need something else added in like sci-fi to make the stakes higher for me. But I keep trying anyway. Why oh why?! 😄
I read my first Riley Sager this week and ummm... ya he's not for me! I read Lock Every Door and while I thought it was a fine book, the writing style is absolutely not my taste. But I still love hearing you talk about the books haha
I think Lock Every Door was my first Riley Sager book and it was a little disappointing to me. I liked it well enough and like you out of all of his books that I have read it was my fave. He has been disappointing me with every release ever since and I think I have had it with Mr. Sager. Going to try to find authors who write terrifying books but that too appears to be very difficult. I think the older I get the harder it becomes to be scared by a book. Not sure but I am still looking. Great video by-the-way.
Hey, Blue Skies! Yeah, I need to be done with Mr. Sager too. I'm just constantly disappointed but always looking for a thriller with a good twist. And that seems to be hard to find! And a book that scares me?! Yeah right! 😄 Hope you're having a good September reading month so far! Thanks so much for watching & commenting! 🖤
The Last Time I Lied is my favorite Sager so far. I love crazy camp stories. I had issues with the ending of this one though. It was too far reaching, imo.
Great video!! I’m still sad you didn’t like The Last Time I Lied 😭 but I understand lol. I also didn’t mind Survive the Night, I had a fun time marking all the dumb decisions the main character made lol.
Exactly, Ty! So many people hate on the book and I'm like it wasn't THAT bad. 😁 And I'm sorry but not sorry about The Last Time I Lied! 🤭 I wanted to like it more but it just didn't do it for me.
Love this video. I have read 3 of Riley Sager books so far and really liked Lock Every Door and Last Time I lied. I’m a feine for a camp setting. But Lock Every Door was so dang boring and I have given up on him. I like the plot of Survive The Night but are they in the car most of the book? I feel I might get bored with that one. I have not heard one good critique about the house across the lake, I am not even going to bother with that one and there are just too many Final Girl books out there.
Oh, they definitely get out of the car at one point in Survive the Night. 😉😊 And The House Across the Lake seems to have people split. Some love it and the rest of us were not fans. I think it depends on what you like in a thriller book.
My ranking is almost identical to yours lol.. if swap the last two because House across the lake felt like a joke or like it was making fun of the genre.
I would like to see Mr Sager write a book with a Male protagonist and POV...can't write that any worse then most of his protagonists to date (that seem to be getting dimmer and dimmer in each book except Survive the Night since the early 90s was a more trusting time..and Final Girls because she blocked out events and sometimes listened to her instincts)
I thought Riley Sager was a woman too up until last year. I haven't read anything by him yet, but Survive the Night, Lock Every Door and Final Girls have been on my TBR for awhile. I'll probably skip the other books. The camp one sounds intriguing but I don't want to read about a 13 year old and a 19 year old.🔑
Oh wow, Loc'd Bibliophile! When I read Lock Every Door I thought Riley Sager was a woman too until I saw his photo online. 👀🤭 But I think you have 3 of his more solid books on your TBR so you should be good to go. 😊
I enjoy his writing, but not in love with it. I have read most of his books and more than likely will continue to do so. Just won't be a FOMO situation for me.
I've only read one Riley Sagar in my life -- Survive the Night -- and it was...not good. I don't really intend on reading anything else by him in the future.
The one and only book I've read by him is Lock Every Door. When I read it, I was like... Really? That's it? I plan on never reading his books because I found his writing to be boring and mediocre.
Thank you for this ranking. I really like "Lock Every Door" too, I just started with his books. My first was "The only one left", then "Lock Every Door", "Final Girls" and now on " The Last Time I Lied" I like the summary you gave of each book, it will help me choose the next one.
Ooh you started with some good ones. Enjoy!
I'll need to do another ranking after his next book comes out because things have definitely changed. 😁
I have yet to read any Riley Sager. I will keep Lock Every Door in mind. I’m loving the colors on his covers. ✨
Hey, I'd say give him a try. It can't hurt. And everyone's opinion seems to differ. But the two most people seemed to enjoy are Lock Every Door and Home Before Dark. Both have spookier vibes so I'd say those are good places to start. 😉

I read Amari, I’m not into YA, but Amari was a very clever book! I didn’t always know where it was going & I was always pleasantly surprised.
Oh yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Happy Camper! 😊

From your ranking, I want to give this author another try, I'll read Survive the night^^. I didn't really like lock every door....so so to me!
Uh oh! Well, I hope you like Survive the Night, n3rahil. I'm in the minority though. A lot of people hate that book. 👀😁
🗝 I've never read a thriller book, but I see that Lock Every Door is available on Libby (I just love the library😁), so I think I'd like to give it a shot!

Oh wow, Loc'd Bibliophile! When I read Lock Every Door I thought Riley Sager was a woman too until I saw his photo online. 👀🤭 But I think you have 3 of his more solid books on your TBR so you should be good to go. 😊
She’s been drinking herself into stupors *giggles* 😂 literally me in every video lol
😄
I enjoy his writing, but not in love with it. I have read most of his books and more than likely will continue to do so. Just won't be a FOMO situation for me.
Yeah, that's how I feel now, S LEW. 😊
Riley Sager always falls apart for me on page one. I don't know why I do this to myself. Riley Sager is Goosebumps for adults.
Hahaha! So true, horrorghoul! I don't know why I do it to myself either. 😳🤭
final girls was a dnf for me too. i am flabbergasted when people say it's their fav sager book.
for me it was boring with unlikable characters.
THANK YOU, sal! Exactly!

I've only read one Riley Sagar in my life -- Survive the Night -- and it was...not good. I don't really intend on reading anything else by him in the future.
😄 Definitely understandable, Chemical Penguin.

Thank you so much, Eva Cook! 😊
The one and only book I've read by him is Lock Every Door. When I read it, I was like... Really? That's it? I plan on never reading his books because I found his writing to be boring and mediocre.
Hahaha! I can understand, Haley. He is definitely not for everyone. 😁
@@NakiasHideaway Yep, that's the joy of reading!
