I keep my gold coins in a small treasure chest in my fish aquarium, looks authentic to most people, little do they know. Being in water it's also protected from fire for a short period of time, can't say the same for the fish though.

Great topic. I've received some criticism as well for mentioning that I keep most of my gold off site. Several locations spread out. I've been doing it for years. No need to put your primary residence if you don't have to and if you have friends and family that have the ability and security to store it. Take advantage of it. One is nearby where I can pick some up if I need to show in a video. Always good to have some security system too.

Pulling out the back of a removable kitchen shelf and cutting a small slot on the back would be effective. There are so many ways to secure and hide precious metals that it almost doesn't matter. Granted, if you're keeping your stack nicely displayed on your coffee table, you've got a problem. So long as you're not talking about it, precious metals just aren't that hard to hide. I do think it makes sense to spread it out both in your home and in multiple locations, if we're talking about more than 100 ounces of Gold, or if you've got a Silver stack of 1,000 ounces or more. Most people just aren't there though. Unless or until a person reaches that level, common sense can usually keep you safe enough. All of that changes if you live in a high-crime area, inside a big city, etc... But for the most part, when people break into your home, they are looking for electronics, jewelry, and drugs. They aren't going to rummage through every area of your home looking for an obscure collection of metal. If they somehow know that you have a coin collection, then you just do what I do. You keep your stack of 40%, your War Nickels, a tube or two of Ike dollars, some fake Gold coins, etc... and just have them in an obvious place where people might see them if they were really looking. 9 times out of 10 if they do look for more than the electronics, jewelry and drugs, they're gonna find what they think is your coin collection and bolt. I even keep some old foreign coins that are Gold in color (aluminum-bronze), which are in coin flips and marked "Gold". Unless the thieves are coin experts, they aren't going to know that they aren't getting the real thing.

There's a huge difference between storing 50 ounces and in not storing 100K in cash. The assumption I make is that if the cash is good then the banks are working. When one system is broken, it is possible they are both broken so there's never a need to store a hundred thousand in cash at home. I may not be able to get to it in the hour I choose but I can get it in a few hours.
In fact, the chances of me ever needing 100K cash at home are very slim. Perhaps 10K for a weekend emergency that requires me to pay unexpected expenses but, in reality, just a few thousand in cash makes the most sense. For any more than that, I'd use a credit card or get more cash from the bank, or both.
Gold or other metals, on the other hand, are not hugely valuable to me today, I can't buy a thing with them at the local Piggly Wiggly, so I don't actually need them at home at all but when that 100K in cash becomes worthless, or when those banks are no longer going to open at all, I really need the metals but I can't get them from the banks. And when I need gold and silver, I'm going to likely need all of it or need it in small amounts but over a long period of time - such as forever.
So when considering disaster preparedness, comparisons based on dollar amounts neither ask nor answer the appropriate question. They're totally different scenarios. On the other hand, if you're younger, and your metals are more for investment and wealth accumulation, then your plan might be to sell your metals for profit in the future, better to have your metals in a vault so you have them when it's time to sell them.

    • @myjunkmail007
      @myjunkmail007 7 місяців тому +1

The scenario you described is exactly what brought me to this video. Now I'm trying to determine how much is a good amount and how comfortable I would be storing/hiding in my home. I'm no expert but seems like silver would be the best to have in a shtf situation. I can't imagine bartering or buying anything worth an ounce of gold. Especially if I'm potentially not getting any change back.

Hello there! I thought about your question for a while... Would I be comfortable keeping 100K cash in the house? Probably not, but what would worry me even more would be to keep it somewhere I can't supervise it, so I would like to keep it close to me. Yes, it would be ideal to have multiple locations, but most of us own only one home. I could ask family out of state to keep it for me, but money (gold) does something to people and that something is seldom good. (Ask Gollum). So, I do worry that I keep too much at home, but I would worry more and I didn't have it with me. It's a tough situation for sure. Thank you for the video. It definitely warrants a part 2...

Those are good ideas. The only thing I will say is that I have personally found that safety deposit boxes tend to be really bad for a few reasons. In some banks their policy actively states that you're not allowed to hold gold, silver or in some cases anything of value in them. Other banks won't allow you to purchase specie insurance. In short all the ones that I have looked into (the banks around where I have lived) have some major issue that rules them out. Thanks as always, sir!

The best advice given by people that work or have worked on something related to security is first don't hide or store everything in a single place and second store it on places that are either on plain view or places that are less obvious or unrelated to what you're storing.

Even if I knew where you lived or had in storage I wouldn’t ever think of breaking into your house or anyone’s house for that matter simply put I can’t stand thieves and people in general who take other people’s stuff. This is an old video but a good one as always. Ever since I began to watch your channel I did up a setup such as multiple safes some hidden others not with cameras outside and inside the house. I thought I had a good safe till you mentioned about the TL 30 than I got really nervous and dropped $4,400 cad on one your information is valuable 😊 thanks again.

I am in my mid-50s and keep all my gold at home. I have never been robbed. I have four siblings, none of them have ever been robbed. My parents are in their 80s and their home has never been broken into. Out of my half dozen or so close friends, none have ever been robbed. Perhaps we are all just lucky, or perhaps people are lying to me, but none of my co-workers has ever been robbed, either.
Robbery is not that common. Yes, it's good to be cautious (same reason I wear a seatbelt every day), which is why I have 3 safes hidden in my home. If a Hollywood gunpoint robbery scenario happens, I'm probably not gonna go Die Hard on the assailants in some dramatic shootout. I will, however, lead them to one of the thinly populated safes, give them what little I have there, and keep the knowledge of the two full safes tucked safely within my small but sturdy brain.
Point of this all is that you're probably safe keeping your gold at home if you live in most parts of the US or Canada or Western Europe. People go a little nutty with SHTF scenarios. My grandfather's generation was obsessed with such scenarios, and they (thankfully) never came to pass. My grandfather was born in 1902.
Just FYI, Charles Montague is not my name.

the key is that no thief will ever start looking in every corner of your house for gold unless he knows that you hide gold; they get in, they steal what they can, they open some drawers looking for money and they leave; just think about the week before you bought your first gold, would you have imagined a thief coming to your house and looking for gold in a hidden spot? Nope. But as soon as you buy ONE coin, you start thinking about thieves being able to find it even in the most remote corner :D By now, we all know that gold and Fight Club share the same first rule :D

Surveillance cameras are defeated by a simple mask. Your neighbors will likely ignore your alarm bells and horns. I have both of those but understand their limitations. I have extensive cameras to provide coverage of each camera so cutting cables or destroying cameras doesn't help and, possibly, I catch an off-guard moment with a license plate, an unmasked assistant or lookout, etc., and I've offered, face-to-face, significant rewards to all of my neighbors for various acts from identifying thieves up to holding them for the police, leading to arrest or conviction.
With all of that, though, you're absolutely correct: get a loud, protective dog. In fact, two of them.
Combine all of the above with a multi-ton vault door to your heavily-reinforced storm room, and that TL-30 6X inside the storm room, and you have a pretty good chance of protecting your precious metals.
Then, all of that goes south the instant the bad guy comes to your door with a pistol to the head of your child - and then you willingly give it all to them.
