Best recording of this Mendelssohn concerto. Sparkling clarity of classical style in the finger work but with tasteful rubato and lyrical phrasing that makes this an unmistakably product of the romantic era. The 3rd movement just rocks with wit, elegance and humor. If this 3rd movement doesn't put a smile on your face, you're made of stone. Masterfully executed. No other recording comes even close.

Cziffra was an outstanding pianist worthy of Franz Liszt in spite of his great sufferings during his lifetime. I admire him as a pianist and as a man. He deserves our great appreciation in every respect.

A zongora egyik óriása! Egy ilyen emlékmű, hogy minden alkalommal, amikor Mendelssohn értelmezését hallom, új neuance-t találok. Káprázatos !

I heard so many versions of this, IMHO THIS is the best recording of all. The best balance of staccatos and use of the sustain pedal i ever heard. Unequalled.

I honestly believe Cziffra plays as closely to how franz liszt would have played. He plays with a beautiful reckless musicality

We've been warned about rubatos not specifically called for by the composer not only in Mendelssohn, but also in Debussy, Faure and Ravel. And yet, one frequently hears them in performance, and with a conviction that suggests an equally established viewpoint. For my part, I enjoy Cziffra's approach, which reveals things in this concerto that I was not aware of. And, of course, his technique serves him well in the outside movements.
I used to study with someone who had concertized in France while Cziffra was active and who knew him personally. He more than once remarked that concerto performances were often still given without a rehearsal, which might explain some of the give-and-take at the beginnings of movements in this recording.

People today are so used to straight boring playing that that the slightest rubato or deviation from a strict tempo seems to disturb them. There is some lovely tender playing here although the recorded sound could be better.

Cziffra, as said in the description, was accompanied by his son, during this performance, and even so, I agree with "musicanth" that you were a little tipsy yourself when writing this, because this performance is great!

Wikipedia: György Cziffra, Jr. was a Hungarian conductor. He nearly died as a child during imprisonment with his family when his father.... who had served in the Hungarian during World War II, was arrested for political reasons by communist authorities after World War II. György and his father worked together on several recordings and live performances. He was a brilliant pianist like his father, but he decided to turn to conducting. Hi died accidentally or by suicide...

I enjoyed that immensely! I love Serkin's more "classical" version also! There should always be room for an individual artist's interpretation of a piece of music. Otherwise, the music might as well be played by a computer, "perfect" and the same every time. How boring would that be!

Georges Cziffra has always been a master of Frederik Chopin and Franz List. Seems like he wanted to interpret Felix Mendelsohn's composition differently. Perhaps he even knew (better then you "yellingLoL" and I) how Felix Mendelsohn would have wanted it to be played. ;o)
