    I try an label every that depend on the external data with a “cloud” Label. This helps me see what will break, and what I might want to target with local entities.

    Excellent demonstration of why something like Home Assistant with mostly local control of the devices you use most is the best option. Pair that with Satellite TV, a failover backup 4G/5G Cellular modem, and Kodi/TVHeadEnd and as long as you still have power, you're good to go for a while.

    HI Chris! Great show and -again- very usefull! Thank you so much!
    Wondering if you could consider two more articles to think about: one about selling your home (and leaving the HA behind) and 'how to control motion if you have pets'??? I am trying to find out how to fix these two major items as I have HA running in more places. Thank you for all you do!!!!!

      Thank you! I'll add those suggestions to my video list. We've been looking for a new home so if we ever find one that is not over priced it'll make for some fun content and hard decisions on what to do with the tech in the house.

    When i unplug the internet from my home assistant i lose the entire home assistant. Its like home assistant is useless without the internet.
    Update: i was able to be connected locally without the internet and i was able to manually still control all my switches, outlets and all my sensors still worked as long as my sonoff zigbee usb dongle is connected. All my switches and outlets and sensors are sonoff. Its great!

    I still have the google mini speaker things and, a google home nest thing. Did have lights ect connected but it all got tossed. why. because anything the internet is down you no longer have any control over the lights, TV, thermostat ect. I can can control them with their own apps ect. Wish Google had a local home server app just for local stuff, ect. I now don't even use google home stuff for hardly anything now.

    7:55 Since you have a Roku, would suggest that you download the HDHomeRun channel on the Roku. That would allow you to watch local tv when the internet is not working. I use this instead of using Plex to watch local TV
    11:30 Cameras are probably phoning home. Since they could not reach home, they stop responding until they can confirm connection is working again.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  2 роки тому

      Good points for both. I have used the HDHomeRun app before.

    Plex is a pain... you have to set up local log in before you get disconnected. Otherwise it's hit or miss just logging in. When a session token expires you could be out of luck otherwise. If I remember correctly local log in had some limitations.
    Assuming nothing has changed my Tablo DVR(streaming model no HDMI) is accessable as long as I don't restart it during an internet outage. I believe that is a problem because it doesn't have a RTC.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  2 роки тому +1

      Local streaming options should just work without Internet. I guess there is always Kodi and direct connection to the fileshare. Gross.

      @@mostlychris I set up my Plex server to allow local access for my wife. I found out the hard way you have to set that up ahead of time. I consider dumping Plex on a regular basis. They are quickly moving away from their roots and developing new features. At the same time they won't fix existing bugs. For instance there is a known bug that locks up some Roku TV's if you exit the Plex app using the home button. Then you have to power cycle the TV to get it working again.

    I needed to reboot hue bridge every month when i disabled it's outside network access.. so stuff may happen after some time..

    • @mostlychris

      That is true. Of the things in my network that I figured could fail after time, it would have happened soon after.

    Are tuya /zigbee devices with hub supposed to work without internet ? I tried out my zigbee/ tuya PIR sensor controlling Zigbee outlet. Fails to control when internet disconnected.

    Perfect video! Perfect timing!! I wonder does your roborock vacuum works without internet? Mine doesn’t work without wan

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  2 роки тому +1

      I use a Neato vac and it's actually an older version. I can't start it from the app or smart speaker without 'net but I can manually push the button and have it clean. That's another device I forgot to include in my tests but I already know what happens with that one.

    The cameras not working is really disconcerting. Do they currently have any outside access through your firewall, such as DNS lookup? If so, you might see if having a local DNS server makes any difference.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  2 роки тому +2

      The only thing they can get outside is NTP. What is strange is the Unifi AP that had high latency as well. The cameras happen to be behind that AP on a wireless backhaul so it's all related somehow. I need to try that again and specifially work on the ap/camera latency issue. It'll be more technical with some network sniffing, etc. Not a video type session, but I am genuinely curious what is going on. That could also help to make my network more robust if there is some sort of hidden issue that is only identified when the Internet goes down.

  • @JordanReese
    @JordanReese 2 роки тому

    I would bet the items going offline is due to the uplink Monitor setting on your unifi APs

    Thanks Chris, can you advise on the setup to turn on/off main internet connection to your home via HA switch? Is it an integration with a network switch or is it flipping the power of the router? Very good video. Highlights the stupidity of not being able to control your heating/cooling without nest devices having internet access. I had a nest and started using a zigbee switch in place. Works great.

    • @mostlychris
      @mostlychris  2 роки тому

      I used a zooz switch to plug my AT&T modem into. To kill the internet, I just turned the switch off and it killed the power to the modem. This also doubles as a power monitor for that modem because I was having my UPS fail quickly on power outages and it seems that modem pulls a lot of power.

      I don't have a video...yet. It is quite complicated and I am using the Free version. The limit is 25 devices but I have more so I've narrowed it down to the most important devices and devices I wouldn't know were down for awhile unless notified.
