Gen Wefella I love when people know that. When Matt Cardle sang it on X factor, it was American night. Call me pedantic, it might have been popularised by an American, but it was written by an English folk singer.
Matt Cardle version is beautiful.
what I liked about this version is that he rearranged it so that there's a bridge between the 2nd and last verse. In a sense, if a singer does that, it provides the song some time to build up to a much more intense last verse that serves the purpose as the climax of the song/performance. Although he didn't take it down that road, by putting a bridge there opens up so much more possibilities to a much more brilliant performance, instead of the regular Roberta Flack dynamics that everyone is following.

Are you comparing it to the "song" or live concert version? I have seen George live a few times and the emotion he puts into the song is amazing. If you are comparing a you tube video, then you are not really giving either artist a real chance, you need to see them both live, then make a comparison...
I agree, i think Roberta Flack's version is the definitive, but any singer can put their own mark on it. I liked Alfie's version.

@squirtyflower Oh, come on, that's hardly fair! I'd have to see both George and Alfie live in concert before I'm qualified to comment on them? lol Since I live in the States that's a pretty tall order. And since an artist can have as many takes as he likes to get a track right, cds are just as valid as concerts (maybe more so) . i like George. But I'll still take Alfie, thankyouverymuch.

I didn't know George Michael ever sang this song, I guess maybe in concert. To hear it sung from the heart one need to listen to Elvis Presley sing it, will take your breath away. Tho Alfie certainly seems to be doing an excellent job, I 'm not acquainted with his type of music.
