The day started with sadness…

- Sorry no update yesterday, it was a difficult day and the only footage I have is of an injured day old cygnet that had to be taken into care with injuries caused by crows.
Baby is recovering well, but sadly one of its siblings was killed by crows this morning, a duckling we had in foster care died, and Sydney killed a gosling that was sadly not able to scramble onto the bank quickly enough when he decided to clear the area for his cygnets to swim in.
But going back to first thing this morning.
My day started at Willen with a walk around the south lake to check nests / cygnets, especially our single mother swan whose mate tragically died sitting next to her on the nest a few weeks ago. She is doing a great job of taking care of her six cygnets alone, but was very hungry so I gave her a good feed.
After walking round the lake, I spent some time with the main flock before heading home to walk my dog and see to my home flock, but it wasn’t long until someone sent a message telling me that Sydney had just killed a gosling so I rushed to get there but sadly could only retrieve the body. Stacey met me there and we did a thorough check on all the birds and spent some time just supervising before deciding it was safe to leave so I headed off to the farm shop for chicken feed.
On the way home, I couldn’t drive straight past where I knew Cookie was living without stopping in to see her. It took me some walking as she wasn’t where I had seen her last, but you’ll hear my reaction when I did find her, with her gorgeous fluffies, all seven of them 🥰
Cookie used to live on the river, she lost her mate and fluffs to bird flu then came to Ashland where she was bashed so was moved back to the river, flew to Caldecotte being beaten badly so I took her to Furzton where she lived happily for ages before flying. Then she was at Willen, coming and going, then back at Ashland, quick stop off in a back garden before being picked up and moved back to Furzton, then back to Caldecotte where she settled with her amazing new cob, and now we have seven new Cookie crumbs ❤️
Cookie crumbs really lifted my mood after so many losses this morning.
I guess I missed something. What happened with the other swan family whose mate passed? :(
The single mama swan? We found her mate dead next to her a few weeks ago. Won’t ever know for sure but suspect it was a territory battle. All we could do was remove the body so she didn’t have to sit next to it when she was nesting. Very sad. We are doing our best to keep watch on her.
