With all due respect, I disagree with some things. For instance, you say "This should have been his Oscar win isnstead of Joker". Ok, I agree Phoenix could have won with The Master and sure 2019 was a strong year, but the Oscars aren't (shouldn't be) compensatory awards. If he gave the best performance in 2019 as well, he deserves the award as well. Also, I get the feeling that you say that you're putting Pitt for Moneyball because you say liked the film. Or again, choosing Kaluuya over Chalamet because you like Get Out more than Call Me By Your Name. I don't think the quality of a performance depends by any means on the quality of its film. Anyways, good video. I don't think any nominee could be consider any short of great, despite agreeing or not with the winner.
Good choices! I just think Same with you except for Eisenberg which I think it’s seemed the same type or role all the time. You know that psyco in his eyes. Firth is so great. So much better than Eisenberg!
Excellent video with explanations for why you make or retain choices, and just great choices in general!!: 2010: Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) (But I do still hold the performance by Firth in high regard. I like King's Speech, not greatly, but it's a solid 7, but Firth is a superb performance imo) 2011: Brad Pitt (Moneyball) (Are you kidding me, this is his best performance to date. Absolutely alive with charisma and true showmanship as a performer, but it's so emotionally alluring too. The final shot of him in the car is some of the finest acting I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.) 2012: Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) (I don't know why, I'm not crazy about this lineup anyway, haven't seen Phoenix or Washington, but I do think the other 3 are superb, although hard for me to get excited over. Cooper is a pretty great performance, however.) 2013: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) (DiCaprio rocks, McConaghuey is my instant runner up and one of the finest winners of any acting category this century. All well and good, but Ejiofor is giving one for the ages from start to finish, and transcending acting as we know it.) 2014: Michael Keaton (Birdman) (No need to even expand on why, it's just the one.) 2015: Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) (My favourite performance of the 2010s, I need not expand any further, but am happy to. Absolutely vibrant in a perfect marriage to the dialogue, and thunderous in his emotional explosivity, both on the surface and whenever the direction allows his subdued torment to show. A performance that revels in the demons of the character, both obvious and personal. Brilliant.) 2016: Can't comment as haven't seen enough of them, so I won't comment. 2017: Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread) (Somehow the best performance DDL has given imo, which is saying a lot. Absolutely on it with the comedy and balance of that with a true earnest tragedy. Chalamet is also exceptional, and would have been an all timer winner.) 2018: Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) (I also adore Bale in Vice, and (especially) Dafoe in Eternity's Gate. Mortensen is pretty great, but he's overshadowed by Ali, and Malek is being awarded for half a performance, something Audrey Hepburn was refused a nomination for. Malek's work is a good performance that makes for an absolutely tragic winner, especially when Cooper is going ahead and giving a performance also based in musicality to full effect, but also to an effect that is so emotionally shattering that I have been unable to forget the beauty of his torment since first seeing the film.) 2019: Adam Driver (Marriage Story) (A solid lineup, one of the best, yay for Pryce! Would have swapped DiCaprio/Banderas out for Egerton or Griffin Davis, but Driver is simply superb, and somehow the best part of a film that is one of the best of the 21st century. if his rendition of Being Alive alone isn't enough to convince you that Driver is one of the best actors working, I think you may have misplaced your taste and/or soul.) 2020: Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey) (Seems more and more out there to call him my winner as time goes on and more people rally behind Ahmed and Hopkins, but I still attest this would have been my winner if the circumstances were different, but how shocking to imagine an ill man bringing this much life and health to this character. Removing that from the equation, Boseman is still remarkable and giving one of my favourite performances in history, shattering through social and political ramifications of his character to unlock a darker and more brutal truth behind Levee than even the script seems to be searching for.) 2021: Benedict Cumberbatch (Power Of The Dog) (Can not comment on Washington or Garfield, but I like Smith a lot in his role, and I am actually in the camp of thinking Bardem is the strongest performer in his film, and the one who really sticks the emotional core the best. But this should have gone to Cumberbatch (or Hidetoshi Nishijima from DMC but I digress) who is playing with a viewer's expectations to uncompomising effect from the first scene until his tragic last.) I am very passionate about my picks for a majority of my winners, but especially I do believe my winners for 15,17,19 and 20 are in that all time camp for me, like would have been top 10 winners. As for the actual winners: Yes to Firth. Meh to Dujardin. Yes/Meh to Day-Lewis (ofc it's great, I just am not passionate) YES YES YES to McConaghuey Meh to Redmayne --- --- Yes to Oldman, but only just. He does do exceptionally well in some scenes. NO to Malek, absolutely not. Yes to Phoenix, but the Driver loss is the biggest tragedy in that decade. Yes to Hopkins, but again, Boseman loss is tragic to me. Yes to Smith, but I would have preferred others.
My picks would be - Jeff bridges true grit (i pick this so he doesn't have to win for crazy heart and Colin firth can win for a single man) - Gary Oldman tinker tailor solider spy - Daniel day-Lewis Lincoln - Leonardo DiCaprio the wolf of wall street - Michael Keaton Birdman - Michael Fassbender Steve jobs - Casey Affleck Manchester by the sea - Daniel day-Lewis phantom thread - Bradley cooper a star is born - Joaquin Phoenix joker - Anthony Hopkins the father - Andrew Garfield tick tick boom - Brendan Fraser the whale - Cillian Murphey Oppenheimer
2010: Colin Firth - Way prefer The Social Network, but Firth shows a lot more range in his performance. 2011: Jean Dujardin - Again, prefer Moneyball, but Dujardin is what made The Artist win over critics and Academy members. Clooney would be my runner-up, but I've never seen A Better Life. 2012: Joaquin Phoenix - I don't remember finishing The Master when it came out, but it's probably Phoenix's best-ever performance. Gotta rewatch it, but this seems like the right choice. 2013: Leonardo DiCaprio - I did love Matthew McConaughey in DBC, and I can see why he won. DiCaprio's performance has stood the test of time though, often seen as his best work. 2014: Michael Keaton - Easy! 2015: Michael Fassbender - Another easy choice, one of my favourite-ever biopíc performances. 2016: Casey Affleck - Yeah, they got this right. 2017: Timothée Chalamet - One of the all-time great young performances. 2018: Christian Bale - Cooper is a close second, but Bale is so incredibly good here, it's a performance I couldn't really believe. 2019: Adam Driver - I don't mind Phoenix winning since it was his first time, but if he'd won for The Master, the easy choice would be Driver. 2020: Chadwick Boseman - Pretty split between Hopkins and Boseman. People are often going to link Boseman's name with that strange fiasco at the ceremony, which is a shame to his legacy. Plus, he more than deserved it, but I can see why people would vote Hopkins instead. 2021: Benedict Cumberbatch - The more nuanced performance. I also kinda hate how blatantly Smith tried to win an Oscar. 2022: Brendan Fraser - I would have preferred Colin Farrell win, but it is a fairly toned down performance. Fraser is a force of nature in The Whale, very hard to forget.
2010 - Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine 2011 - Michael Fassbender - Shame 2012 - Joaquin Phoenix - The Master 2013 - Leonardo DiCaprio - TWOWS 2014 - Michael Keaton - Birdman 2015 - Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revanent 2016 - Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea 2017 - Robert Pattinson - Good Time 2018 - Ethan Hawke - First Reformed 2019 - Joaquin Phoenix - Joker 2020 - Anthony Hopkins - The Father 2021 - Andrew Garfield -tick.tick.BOOM 2022 - Austin Butler - Elvis
These are the ones I would change: 1. Bradley Cooper instead of Rami Malek 2. Timothee Chalamet instead of Gary Oldman 3. Adam Driver instead of Joaquin Phoenix 4. Andrew Garfield instead of Will "the Slapper" Smith (this opinion was before the slap) Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea is probably my favorite male performance of the Decade.
Leonardo DiCaprio should've won his Oscar for ''The Wolf of Wall Street,'' rather than ''The Revenant.'' ... However, I would've picked Timothee Chalamet (''Call Me by Your Name'') over Gary Oldman (''Darkest Hour'') and Ryan Gosling (''La La Land'') over Casey Affleck (''Manchester by the Sea'').
2010: James Franco (127 Hours); 2011: Gary Oldman (Thinker Tailor Soldier Spy; 2012: Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables); 2013: Leonardo Dicaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street); 2014: Michael Keaton (Birdman); 2015: MichaelFassbender(Steve Jobs); 2016: Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge); 2017: Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread); 2018: Christian Bale (Vice); 2019: Adam Driver (Marriage Story); 2020: Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom); 2021: Andrew Garfield (Tick Tick...Boom)
I agree with every single one of your picks. But if we opened up the ballot to performances not nominated: 2010: Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine 2011: Michael Fassbender - Shame 2012: Denis Larant - Holy Motors 2013: Oscar Isaac - Inside Llewyn Davis 2014: Ralph Fiennes - The Grand Budapest Hotel 2015: Samuel L Jackson - The Hateful Eight 2016: Andrew Garfield - Silence (he was nominated for the wrong movie) 2017: Hugh Jackman - Logan 2018: Ethan Hawke - First Reformed 2019: Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems 2020: Delroy Lindo - Da 5 Bloods 2021: Hidetoshi Nishijima - Drive My Car
Largely agree with your list and your rationales. Phoenix in The Master is the greatest screen performance of the Century so far and it is a travesty it never stood a chance given the overwhelming perceptual tidal wave of DDL as Lincoln by Spielberg. My hatred of biopic wins means I wince at the Steve Jobs pick, but as you point out there were really no good choices that year - horrible set of nominees. Biopic impressions garbage reduces from 8 to 1 or 2 on your list (depending on perception of the Pitt choice, given that he makes essentially no attempt at all to portray the actual Billy Bean and treats it as an original screenplay) is a big positive, but all round the choices are solid.
I think body transformations play a bit too much as the winning/deciding factor for a win. I think it's what you do WITH that transformation. Hot take but I don't think Matthew was all time great in dallas, he was good but not as good as leo. Lewis in lincoln was a complete transformation on top of an outstanding performance. And i think that Leo's revenant win was purely because of the physical toll and pain he went through (although he was good in it, he wasn't necessarily *acting* as much as wall street)
2010:Javier Bardem- Biutiful 2011:Brad Pitt- Moneyball 2012:Bradley Cooper- Silver Linings Playbook 2013:Leonardo di Caprio- The Wolf of Wall Street 2014:Ralph Fiennes- The Grand Budapest Hotel 2015:Samuel L Jackson- The Hateful Eight 2016:Casey Affleck- Manchester by the Sea 2017:Timothee Chalamet- Call me by Your Name 2018:Bradley Cooper- A Star is Born 2019:Antonio Banderas- Pain and Glory 2020:Anthony Hopkins- The Father 2021:Andrew Garfield- Tick, tick...Boom!
@@norm-bb3bb it was a good performance, for sure, but the only performance on that film that I actually enjoyed, was by the phenomenal Julie - Airplane! - Hagerty... the only character I cared for
The only thing that bothers it’s when people say a performance is “fine”, “okay”. I think it’s pretentious coming from people that don’t act. Twitter is a bit annoying lately, because people rather hate than appreciate and that sometimes carries to Critics as well.
Ehhh I’d like to think that people understand that the actor they’re criticizing is a significantly better actor than them but can still have an opinion on it. I talk about basketball players all the time but still acknowledge that they are 100x the player that I am. But that doesn’t mean they can’t have an opinion on them too if that makes sense
You don’t need to be a professional at something to critique it. That’s like saying that “It bothers me when people complain about food being bad when they’re not a chef.”
@@poett8875 you totally lost my point. I meant there’s a tendency to shrug it off performances because we don’t like them, and we end up diminishing them. There’s nothing to do with being an actor to be qualified to judge, but not valuing the effort and saying “it’s fine” or it’s “mediocre”, when we can simply say “it wasn’t my taste but”.
@@TheFilmDrunk My bad if it came across that you need to be something to have an opinion. What I meant, it’s that nowadays people have the tendency to diminish art, and act like it’s easy what they do, just because we didn’t liked. I personally don’t like the “it’s okay”, “it’s mediocre” attitude we have about everything when it comes to films. It’s just like when CODA won and people start saying was bad, mediocre, it’s just the tendency now. But I really like your content, and also don’t want to take what you do for granted.

Jake G not even being nominated for Nightcrawler is ridiculous, even by Oscar standards.

I’m begging you to do a best actress one!!!
BRADLEY COOPER OSCAR WHEN
chalamet should have won the oscar no hype
2010: Colin Firth
2011: George Clooney (Michael Fassbender - Shame)
2012: Joaquin Phoenix
2013: Matthew McConaughey
2014: Michael Keaton (David Oyelowo - Selma)
2015: Leonardo DiCaprio
2016: Casey Affleck
2017: Timothee Chalamet
2018: Bradley Cooper
2019: Joaquin Phoenix
2020: Anthony Hopkins
2021: Andrew Garfield
They are obsessed with giving the award to lead actors in bio pics - boring
Good choices! I just think Same with you except for Eisenberg which I think it’s seemed the same type or role all the time. You know that psyco in his eyes. Firth is so great. So much better than Eisenberg!
2010 - Eisenberg - TSN
2011 - Jean Dujardin - The Artist
2012 - Bradley Cooper - SLP
2013 - Dicaprio - TWOWS
2014 - Keaton - Birdman
2015 - Dicaprio - Revenant
2016 - Casey - Manchester
2017 - Chalamet - CMBYN
2018 - Malek - Bohenian Rhapsody
2019 - Driver - MStory
2020 - Hopkins - The Father
2021 - Cumberbatch - TPOTD
Buck teeth win was surprising. He didn’t deserve it
Rami Malek winning for Bohemian Rhapsody still angers me to this day. And mind you I'm a fan of his.
You're insane if you think Cooper deserved that Oscar before DaFoe. Did you watch Eternitys Gate
Completely agree with 2018. Cooper should’ve won (at least over Malek).
I was super desperate for driver to win for marriage story. Pain
bro both scarlett and adam should have won and i stand by that.
The new lens is good! It seems a bit longer than the other one. I dig it!
Excellent video with explanations for why you make or retain choices, and just great choices in general!!:
2010: Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) (But I do still hold the performance by Firth in high regard. I like King's Speech, not greatly, but it's a solid 7, but Firth is a superb performance imo)
2011: Brad Pitt (Moneyball) (Are you kidding me, this is his best performance to date. Absolutely alive with charisma and true showmanship as a performer, but it's so emotionally alluring too. The final shot of him in the car is some of the finest acting I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.)
2012: Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) (I don't know why, I'm not crazy about this lineup anyway, haven't seen Phoenix or Washington, but I do think the other 3 are superb, although hard for me to get excited over. Cooper is a pretty great performance, however.)
2013: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) (DiCaprio rocks, McConaghuey is my instant runner up and one of the finest winners of any acting category this century. All well and good, but Ejiofor is giving one for the ages from start to finish, and transcending acting as we know it.)
2014: Michael Keaton (Birdman) (No need to even expand on why, it's just the one.)
2015: Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) (My favourite performance of the 2010s, I need not expand any further, but am happy to. Absolutely vibrant in a perfect marriage to the dialogue, and thunderous in his emotional explosivity, both on the surface and whenever the direction allows his subdued torment to show. A performance that revels in the demons of the character, both obvious and personal. Brilliant.)
2016: Can't comment as haven't seen enough of them, so I won't comment.
2017: Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread) (Somehow the best performance DDL has given imo, which is saying a lot. Absolutely on it with the comedy and balance of that with a true earnest tragedy. Chalamet is also exceptional, and would have been an all timer winner.)
2018: Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) (I also adore Bale in Vice, and (especially) Dafoe in Eternity's Gate. Mortensen is pretty great, but he's overshadowed by Ali, and Malek is being awarded for half a performance, something Audrey Hepburn was refused a nomination for. Malek's work is a good performance that makes for an absolutely tragic winner, especially when Cooper is going ahead and giving a performance also based in musicality to full effect, but also to an effect that is so emotionally shattering that I have been unable to forget the beauty of his torment since first seeing the film.)
2019: Adam Driver (Marriage Story) (A solid lineup, one of the best, yay for Pryce! Would have swapped DiCaprio/Banderas out for Egerton or Griffin Davis, but Driver is simply superb, and somehow the best part of a film that is one of the best of the 21st century. if his rendition of Being Alive alone isn't enough to convince you that Driver is one of the best actors working, I think you may have misplaced your taste and/or soul.)
2020: Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey) (Seems more and more out there to call him my winner as time goes on and more people rally behind Ahmed and Hopkins, but I still attest this would have been my winner if the circumstances were different, but how shocking to imagine an ill man bringing this much life and health to this character. Removing that from the equation, Boseman is still remarkable and giving one of my favourite performances in history, shattering through social and political ramifications of his character to unlock a darker and more brutal truth behind Levee than even the script seems to be searching for.)
2021: Benedict Cumberbatch (Power Of The Dog) (Can not comment on Washington or Garfield, but I like Smith a lot in his role, and I am actually in the camp of thinking Bardem is the strongest performer in his film, and the one who really sticks the emotional core the best. But this should have gone to Cumberbatch (or Hidetoshi Nishijima from DMC but I digress) who is playing with a viewer's expectations to uncompomising effect from the first scene until his tragic last.)
I am very passionate about my picks for a majority of my winners, but especially I do believe my winners for 15,17,19 and 20 are in that all time camp for me, like would have been top 10 winners.
As for the actual winners:
Yes to Firth.
Meh to Dujardin.
Yes/Meh to Day-Lewis (ofc it's great, I just am not passionate)
YES YES YES to McConaghuey
Meh to Redmayne
---
---
Yes to Oldman, but only just.
My picks would be
- Jeff bridges true grit (i pick this so he doesn't have to win for crazy heart and Colin firth can win for a single man)
- Gary Oldman tinker tailor solider spy
- Daniel day-Lewis Lincoln
- Leonardo DiCaprio the wolf of wall street
- Michael Keaton Birdman
- Michael Fassbender Steve jobs
- Casey Affleck Manchester by the sea
- Daniel day-Lewis phantom thread
- Bradley cooper a star is born
- Joaquin Phoenix joker
- Anthony Hopkins the father
- Andrew Garfield tick tick boom
- Brendan Fraser the whale
- Cillian Murphey Oppenheimer
Jessie is just playing himself. Hes the same in everything. thats not acting.
When is the changing best actress video coming??
2010 - Jesse Eisenberg
2011 - Brad Pitt
2012 - Daniel Day Lewis
2013 - Leonardo DiCaprio
2014 - Eddie Redmayne
2015 - Leonaro DiCaprio
2016 - Andrew Garfield
2017 - Daniel Day Lewis
2018 - Rami Malek
2019 - Juaquin Phoenix
2020 - Chadwick Boseman
2021 - Andrew Garfieldd
2010 - Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine
2011 - Michael Fassbender - Shame
2012 - Joaquin Phoenix - The Master
2013 - Leonardo DiCaprio - TWOWS
2014 - Michael Keaton - Birdman
2015 - Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revanent
2016 - Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea
2017 - Robert Pattinson - Good Time
2018 - Ethan Hawke - First Reformed
2019 - Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
2020 - Anthony Hopkins - The Father
2021 - Andrew Garfield -tick.tick.BOOM
2022 - Austin Butler - Elvis
Benedict Cumberbatch gave the best performance of the decade so far in Power Of The Dog.
agree with most of the list, but not picking joaquin in joker is crazyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Moneyball is probably in my top 10 movies of the 2010s
u already know i forwarded to 2018
The Oscar’s stopped making sense a long time ago.
I’m glad to see Monster making your list.
Do another video for actress
These are the ones I would change:
1. Bradley Cooper instead of Rami Malek
2. Timothee Chalamet instead of Gary Oldman
3. Adam Driver instead of Joaquin Phoenix
4. Andrew Garfield instead of Will "the Slapper" Smith (this opinion was before the slap)
Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea is probably my favorite male performance of the Decade.
só escolheu os piores
Leonardo DiCaprio should've won his Oscar for ''The Wolf of Wall Street,'' rather than ''The Revenant.'' ... However, I would've picked Timothee Chalamet (''Call Me by Your Name'') over Gary Oldman (''Darkest Hour'') and Ryan Gosling (''La La Land'') over Casey Affleck (''Manchester by the Sea'').
2010 : Jessie essenberg 2011: Micheal fassbender 2012: Joaquin Phoenix 2013: chinwetel ejiofor 2014: Micheal Keaton 2015: Micheal fassbender 2016: Casey Affleck 2017: Timothy chalamet 2018: Ethan hawke 2019: Adam driver 2020: Anthony Hopkins 2021: will Smith
Keaton instead of Redmayne, Fassbender instead of DiCaprio, DDL instead of Oldman (idc, love _Phantom Thread),_ and Cooper instead of Malek.
2010: James Franco (127 Hours);
2011: Gary Oldman (Thinker Tailor Soldier Spy;
2012: Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables);
2013: Leonardo Dicaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street);
2014: Michael Keaton (Birdman);
2015: MichaelFassbender(Steve Jobs);
2016: Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge);
2017: Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread);
2018: Christian Bale (Vice);
2019: Adam Driver (Marriage Story);
2020: Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom);
2021: Andrew Garfield (Tick Tick...Boom)
I agree with every single one of your picks. But if we opened up the ballot to performances not nominated:
2010: Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine
2011: Michael Fassbender - Shame
2012: Denis Larant - Holy Motors
2013: Oscar Isaac - Inside Llewyn Davis
2014: Ralph Fiennes - The Grand Budapest Hotel
2015: Samuel L Jackson - The Hateful Eight
2016: Andrew Garfield - Silence (he was nominated for the wrong movie)
2017: Hugh Jackman - Logan
2018: Ethan Hawke - First Reformed
2019: Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems
2020: Delroy Lindo - Da 5 Bloods
2021: Hidetoshi Nishijima - Drive My Car
Joaquin Phoenix absolutely deserved the win. But Adam Driver was right next to him.
Yessss!! Adam was great in Marriage Story but Joaquin was phenomenal in Joker.
Other than 2017 and 2019 and 2020 we have the same picks. So that kicks ass.
I was very happy with the Eddie Redmayne win. That still goes down as one of the greatest biopic performances of all time for me.
2010:Javier Bardem- Biutiful
2011:Brad Pitt- Moneyball
2012:Bradley Cooper- Silver Linings Playbook
2013:Leonardo di Caprio- The Wolf of Wall Street
2014:Ralph Fiennes- The Grand Budapest Hotel
2015:Samuel L Jackson- The Hateful Eight
2016:Casey Affleck- Manchester by the Sea
2017:Timothee Chalamet- Call me by Your Name
2018:Bradley Cooper- A Star is Born
2019:Antonio Banderas- Pain and Glory
2020:Anthony Hopkins- The Father
2021:Andrew Garfield- Tick, tick...Boom!
Your 2019 pick is perfection
BIUTIFUL THANK YOUUUUUUU
crazy how ur 100% right
Please do this with Best Picture winners!!
Brad Pitt should've won
so true king
Cumberbatch deserved that Oscar.
Sorry Antonio Banderas was waaaay better in a more challenging role than Adam Driver...
Driver didn't even deserve to be nominated
Get over it , Rami won and Bradley didn't
no
look at the title of the video dumb mf
12 Time Academy Award Loser Bradley Cooper.
Great idea, I hope you do it with best actresses too!
