- Another part and history of the SN: Sacramento Northern Railway Oral History and Pictures from a former rider, Tom Buckingham. Tom filmed this on 16mm years ago and was kind enough to have transferred the film to digital format for sharing on UA-cam. He has helped keep the memories alive of the great SN! Tom was from Oakland and later Moraga, with a lot of knowledge and support of SN operations, people, and rolling stock.
Tom Buckingham should diffentently get a lot of credit for making this….It's a part of our history that would be lost without this kind of footage and his ability to narrate. Thank you
Kudos to Tom for his fantastic, illuminating narration and for putting this together.
Enjoyed running on part of the old Sacramento Northern Line with a speeder group. (2018). Great history
California was beautiful once upon a time.
Bee-you-ti-ful is right. Now it's Tobacco Road .
This video and the other similar companion one were originally recorded on 16 mm film taken by Tom Buckingham, formerly of Oakland and now a resident of Moraga. The voice you hear is also that of Tom Buckingham. Although he has always shared this material and has no problem with someone else placing them on UA-cam, he is disappointed that he was not given credit for all the work he did.
Great job, from someone who grew up in Moraga in the late 60's-early 70's
I was taken back by seeing the old Sac train that ran through Moraga. I remember the train tracks and the old overpass leading to the tunnel in Canyon on its way through Shepard Canyon and into Oakland. What great memories!!
Thanks for posting this on Google.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for posting this with narration, and especially to Tom for making it in the first place. The narration really makes it useful to us who only know bits and pieces of what we are seeing. This is absolutely priceless!
Thanks so much for posting this. I've bicycled and walked as much of the Sacramento Northern Route between 40th and Shafter and Moraga as I can to try to match still pictures with what is there now but it is difficult. These films are super helpful. I would love to talk to you about your memories if you get a chance. -jesse
Wow, so nice video with very informative narration. Big thank You to Mr Buckingham.
Really makes me wish I could go back in time. The only portion of the SN I knew well was the line between Chico and Durham, California and the Marysville line in the streets.
I love these videos I keep watching over and over I wish there was more videos like this but north of Sacramento
SN 652 and 654 are at Rio Vista Jct / Western Railway Museum.
SN 653 is at Perris / Orange Empire Railway Museum.
The rest of the steplecabs were recycled. :(
Awesome. From a railfan who lives in Sacramento, thank you so much for the data.
Does Tom or someone connected to Tom still have the 16mm films? It would be amazing to see these films rescanned directly into a digital format in higher quality, 1080p or 4K. These films are really quite special to see.
Best bet would be contacting the Western Railway Museum's archive department. Tom was a member of that organization.
Fascinating! Did any of the Steeple Cabs get preserved? They remind me of the Steeple Cabs the Milwaukee Road had in Deer Lodge and Butte, Montana. But the SN and the WP had class.
About what year was this filmed? I am originally from Lafayette. :-)
I was wondering the same thing. I think they're from a range of dates; mid-40s to late-50s?
When you said who was on the white horse and said Frank or Sam,did you mean the Carr Family?
Ohhh how bittersweet that was. Seeing my innocent Norcal one more time, only to be yanked back to reality, back to the damage done to this beautiful state by Marxists.
Thank you soooo much for the wonderful memories...
