  • Incrediball hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens), by Proven Winners, are very easy and forgiving to prune. They bloom on new wood, not on overwintered wood, so you’re not pruning off any flower buds when you prune during the colder months. Flower blooms grow fresh in the springtime on young green shoots.
    In general, you’ll get a great show of flowers if you prune them once a year, either in late fall or early spring. That said, they can usually survive being cut right back to the ground and even thrive with no pruning at all (as they’re native plants). But, like other PW Color Choice shrubs, some careful pruning once a year will help them to create a strong, permanent framework of woody branches that can support blooms year after year.
    👩‍🌾 Here’s how I prune Incrediball Hydrangeas: 👩‍🌾
    1. Remove any branches that are dead, dying, diseased, or damaged. Take them right down to the ground to create space at the base of the plant. This will help with air circulation and decrease moisture-related pest and disease issues.
    2. Remove any branches growing in odd directions, including branches growing inwards towards the center of the shrub, as well as crossing/rubbing branches. Try to leave a permanent branch framework where main stems are coming up out of the ground and extending out into open space from the center of the plant.
    3. Cut the whole shrub back by 1/3 of its total height. So for a 4’-5’ Incredible Hydrangea, you’re generally cutting off a foot or two of growth. This length includes the flowers (take that into account if you dead-headed the plant in the autumn). So, a 4’ hydrangea shrub would be about 2’8” tall after pruning. I like to prune the main stems so they’re in a rounded shape.

    Just bought some Incrediballs in spring. Unfortunately, they flopped over in a mess due to rains over the summer. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe because they are young and first season? Hopeful for second year- will be pruning very lightly!

    So helpful!! Just came across your channel and I LOVE it. I have ten Annabelle hydrangeas planted in my garden so this was really useful to watch. Would you prune them after their first summer in the grown? Mine are still very small new plants… doubt they will flower this year.

      I just left mine grow on their own terms for a year or two - that seemed to work for me 🤷‍♀️I like to let young woody plants settle in before removing too many branches

    If they don’t bloom on any of the old wood, then why does it matter to try to keep strong stems from the previous year?

    Can you dead head in the fall? Do you see any difference in growth the next season if you do? Thanks for this helpful video.

    • @HomefortheHarvest
      @HomefortheHarvest  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, you can certainly dead-head in the fall. I'm not sure it would make much difference at all the next season. Sometimes the flowers will hold a lot of ice/snow and cause the branch below to break...i think this would be a lot less likely to happen if you deadhead hydrangeas in the fall. I just like the look of them amidst the snow, and I like to know how tall the plant is before I try and prune only 1/3 of it 🤷‍♀️
