Townfolk Tussle is an adorable boss monster game, and I use the word adorable incredibly loosely. This is a game that is going to merge Cuphead and Kingdom Death Monster if equal parts, and the result is....just fun. Like seriously fun.

After excitedly awaiting this Kickstarter launch for a while now, your title had me worried (with the consolation that I’d be saving some money, shelf space and time). But I’m glad to see you enjoyed it so much and can’t wait to see more of the game and the miniatures on the KS page (along with your cartoon doppelgänger 🙂).

Yes, it was a joke that I explained to the video but I realized in hindsight that for those that don't see explanation, the title won't land well.
Since you mentioned your wife not being a fan of the art in Townsfolk Tussle, I think it might be interesting to have a video featuring your wife and her top board games. Getting her perspective on things would provide interesting insights in your board game group dynamics.
I can certainly do her lists, I don't know if I can convince her to be on the channel :)
If she's camera shy she can just be off to the side of behind the camera while you have a conversation.
I have been playing a few solo games for some time now, and not sure I have found an actual game that delivers that true experience. The way I see this, board games are made for groups and all the categorized solo games are purely adaptations from developers to capture a bigger audience. I think the game is a simpler alternative to heavier games and I really do like that. Thanks for your honest review great work.
I've played this game on TTS and it is overall a good game. My personal opinion is that, although it is good, due to it being less of a story based or campaign based boss battler, I don't think my gaming group will have it hit the table much. It's a fun game and I may still back it, but I just don't personally have the gaming group to thoroughly enjoy it for what it is. My group got sucked into Aeon Trespass and Oathsworn, so going from that to Townsfolk Tussle left them wanting more story and connectedness between sessions.
Totally get that. I genuinely love this one....but also unsure about playgroup oppurtunity.
I may be on my own with this opinion, but I’m really not a fan of the clickbaity title. You’re my absolute favorite board game channel and I respect your opinion a ton. Unfortunately a lot of us don’t have tons of time to watch 20 minute videos every day, and I almost skipped this one and was sad that this game might be a bad one. I get that you have to drive views, but maybe for these review videos keep the titles more straightforward? Idk maybe I’m off here...just feels a little off to me. Anyway glad you liked it, loved the review, and keep up the amazing content!

Great review, but man that title seems unfair. I didn't see that you in fact hate this game on any level. Maybe "I should hate this game, but boy is it fun" would be more accurate. Either way, the game looks great and you guys have clearly enjoyed playing it, so it seems very tempting. Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into these videos!

Man I love the rubber hose art of this game. And the semi coop nature does kind of fit those old cartoons where they blow each other up. It really seems best at 4 though, so that worries me for my local game group, because no one near me really enjoys boss battlers.
Id assume 3 would be great too. Even two two handed I would do.
I really should have mentioned this before now 😕 I'm not sure when it started (at least a couple months ago), but the link in your description for boardgameco is a bad link. You need a space between the website and "If" YT has run it together into a weblink. Not sure how easy it is to go back and change old videos (or if you want to even bother with it). Keep up the great work though :) Excited to watch this video when I have time.

Seeing it run solo and seeing it run with 4 is massively different, I’m tentative about this in paper as it looks like it needs 4.
Yep, I'd play with 3 and 4 easily, 2 I'd consider, solo I wouldn't do again in the current state.
What I like about the idea of this game is that it can function as quicker to set up version of KD. Introducing players to concepts in KD in a slightly simpler format.

Great review! Love you mentioning your concerns, fortunately there’s 4 in our gaming group, and I don’t mind solo play controlling multiple heroes! Been itching to back this the first I saw the art, and that it fills a genre hole in my collection without the KDM artwork or theme (never drew me in but as much hype there still is on KDM, it’s still on my list of games to get). Backing this one for sure!

I would almost say that it could use some bad luck roll mitigation at lower player counts as a balancing mechanism but this is one that I'm glad to back when it launches

Everything about this game is a no EXCEPT the art. I like the idea of what they are going for but I'm just not sure this experience has legs. I will watch how much they do unlock and what content they add, but thats about it. I wish them success. Thanks for providing a detailed overview cause that's exactly what I needed to see.

@@BoardGameCo its not really that at all. I just found nothing that impressive to even tempt me. I think this is easier to get to the table, which may be a big advantage. The actual fight was a little boring. The settlement stuff was decent. I'm sure the price tag is high too. Im playing Freedom 5 this week and I'll see if that's worth my money.
The game looks awesome, played it on Tabletop Simulator and had a blast. I wish that I could back a standee version, it's too expensive for me right now

I like the art. I like the silliness. I like cartoons. I like the dynamic board. I like unique characters and leveling them up.
But, I'm not getting a good vibe for this game. I may be wrong, but the combat and gameplay of battling a boss doesn't seem to be engaging to me. The boss takes a turn, which is usually to move and attack. Then, each character errr.... moves and attacks. You have 1 target, the boss. It looks like each character has one obvious best weapon to use, which may do 1 or 2 damage. I don't see much depth in either strategy or tactics.
I see why there are additional achievement cards, because they may require the player to think about their action a bit more as compared to just doing the obvious. Yeah, I can see how it would not be any fun playing solo. It may be fun in a group due to the silliness, just not sure if it would be fun enough.
I'll follow the KS, maybe something will catch my eye, but my initial reaction is to pass.
It may have been a mistake to show 2 character gameplay, what you're seeing is very much what I felt. At larger player counts it felt more interesting. At the end of the day it's still a skirmish game...but how and where to move, push etc does matter.
i’m curious if they will offer standees along with the miniatures. Standees look great with this art style

Don't get me wrong, love the game but there are also things I didn't love about it.
I want to back this game on kickstarter because I love the art and the game itself, but for me there is a slight issue. I live in southamerica, thus categorized as "rest of the world" for shipping prices. Would you say it is worth (in terms of value too) the $56 shipping cost if I am in a situation similar to yours, that I ussualy play games at 2p (and the other person does not like long games that much)?

I would be curious to see what your opinion is on Kickstarter's using Early Bird incentives. Do they hurt or help a campaign? (As in the case with Townsfolk Tussle.)
Tough one, it's more about how you do it then anything else, but yes, I'll be talking about TT and the early bird.
@@BoardGameCo Cool! Another example that I've been a part of was with Dawn of Madness from Diemension Games and their Black Friday Special. That one caused a lot of controversy as well.
As for semi cooperative, I tend to not like it ether but I feel it fits the theme of this game. I would probably be like you trying to aid everyone.
It actually fits to the point that I'd hesitate to remove it.

It looks pretty kewl. Did you try with your daughter. I would be interested to play with my daughter but worry about playing 2 players and theme/kid friendly.
Tough one for me, I don’t think it’s different enough from KDM to warrant having both in my collection, despite loving a lot of things about this game.

I am totally with you concerning your opinion about skirmish games. Getting a single large health number down to zero in a linear fashion always feels like work and the end is often anticlimactic (Wait, it’s over). That’s why I canceled my Twisted Fable pledge (and because of your good money saving advice video; maybe game companies should pay you NOT to produce any videos that lower their revenue :) ). I recently bought Aeon‘s End because of good reviews and because I like Coop and deckbuilding, but it didn‘t click with me do the large health reduction and the player characters feeling not different enough. Really looking forward to Oathsworn, though, where taking health means e.g. chopping of a tail with an effect on the enemy.
Lol, the blackmail guy sounds like a fun position. That being said I actually really like this one and 💯 am getting it.

I love the artwork and really like the idea of easy and fun skirmish game, but also am afraid that noone else going to play with me :( most of my friends aren't feeling well with so much english text in the game and I'm not sure if my husband will like the graphics and that kind of silly jokes :(
Ya, I do highly recommend this one but solo play in its current form feels like a compromise on the potential.

I don't play solo, but do you think that shrinking the board down for solo might solve some of the problems you had. I just seems to me that when your playing solo that their was so much room to move around, and because of that room less interactions, which is what this game seems to be about. I would probably put in a separate smaller board for solo.
Potentially. In general I just preferred it more with more players but the smaller space might help too.

As cool as the miniatures look from what I've seen, I kind of wish I could get a standees version instead. That art is just too good.

This seems like it shines with 3 or 4 but not sure how good it will be for 1 or 2 which more often than not these days is my player count so sadly though I like what I see on this game so NBC will likely pass
I'd play it with 2 if we each control 2 characters, but I'd prefer it at 3 or 4.

In this detailed honest review I don't think you've mentioned that in this game it actually a possibility to lose 3 turns...
I repeat: to stay out of the game for 3 turns on do nothing.

I haven't encountered that. Is that a common case or an exception? For a common case sure it would be a problem... For an exception I don't really care.
Definitely too much empty space on the board with 1-2 players. Feels like you should control more than 1 player but semi coop tension will be lost
Yes, if playing at two players, I would probably play with two characters each.

They should remove the semi coop concept and instead emphasise the friendly fire concept. So it's more about the chaos than competing objectives then it'll encourage really silly interactions.
I actually think it works really well as is, to the point that I wouldn't want it removed.

I didn't really sense much hate from you at all towards this game. I got a sense of a real desire to play the game with 3 other people.
Pass from me though. Boss battlers really aren't my thing, and the cartoon aesthetic isn't one that grabs me either.

I would say 3+, but even 2 with the right people and playing 2 handed. It's solo that I'd personally avoid.
With an optimal player count of 3-4, this will have to be a pass for me. While this is very similar to the showdown phase of KDM, so much is lost without that full campaign, with personal an on-going narratives that change and improve over time.

Skirmish games need to innovate to get rid of the moments when you roll and do nothing... So boring... TMB did well to deal with fails but needs further innovation

The creators made a very bad business move. An early bird that saved the first 100 backers $15,--!? (Early bird is $70,-- instead of $85,--!)
Normally I'm OK with early birds, but normally they're valid for the first 48h, save you between $3-5,-- or give you some promo item for free (others can buy for $3-5,--) or print your name in the box or such... But $15,-- off??? You can call me greedy, but I'll always remember that I had to pay $15,-- more to get it and that somewhat spoils it for me!
As a European backer I'm mostly late for this "first X backers" (if it's not a large number) because of time zones and have to pay more shipping (+VAT) and sometimes even customs fees. So this big bonus for the first 100 backers is good for them, but not good for the rest of us. I'll watch the project, but not as enthusiastic as I would've normally...
I put out a video today and I talk about it. But to be clear...you didn't have to pay $15 more....they just got luck and got to pay $15 less. The right move here was to not offer that early bird at all.
