The price of the surplus market will remain high as long as the government keeps import restrictions up and refuses to let decommissioned rifles go into market.

I was inspired to buy a 1943 M91/30 all due to this channel talking about how great they were and how much you can do with them. I was 15 and had saved up $230.00 and purchased the rifle off of a friend because of my new inspired love for the Mosin. Everyone who was not knowledgeable about Mosins tried to talk me down from buying one, but I used your videos and the rife to prove to them just how great the Mosin Nagant truly was. Thank you Eric for teaching me about these great surplus rifles. I hope you continue to do so.

I remember when I was 12-14 in the early 2010s and SKSs where still anywhere from 100-180 in any configuration. Ofcourse its 2018 and Im 20 now, I didnt like the price hike in 2013-2014, but after I turned 18 and started buying and investing in guns, I also started truly looking at quality. I happily paid 300 for an original Norinco Type 56 about 8 monthes ago, I squeeze 2.5-3 MOA out of that rifle. For a semi automatic 7.62x39 wood and steel rifle that can engage human sized targets at 300-400yds, $300 is still cheap.

Best Gripe Segment in a while. Also as a history nut, C&Rsenal is the most criminal underwatched/rated gun channel on UA-cam. A lot of good to great channels (like this one!) but I consider C&Rsenal the top of the top. Also love the shout out for Can and Ball. All the more guns that won’t get chopped up for a $200 gift card @ gun buyback...

  • @thegoldencaulk2742
    @thegoldencaulk2742 6 років тому +81

The reality of milsurps is that they will almost always be perpetually increasing in value. By their very nature of being both out of production AND being used in high-stress environments, their survivability becomes paramount. One chopped up Enfield means one less correct Enfield, and then the value of every correct Enfield is driven up. The amount of available milsurps will never grow, but will always shrink.
Now, y'all making a video on something *might* raise the price for a week or even a month, but the long-term popularity of that gun won't rely on getting featured on youtube once in a while. If anything, the one's at fault for the price hikes are the viewers, who jump on that gun's particular bandwagon. Eventually, it's value will return to reasonable levels as collectors wait for your average gun guy to find a new distraction. We're a patient bunch, after all.

    • @That_NJ_guy

TheGoldenCaulk wait until we can 3D print milsurp repros.

    • @Ben_not_10
      @Ben_not_10 6 років тому +4

TheGoldenCaulk you’re right because what people forget is that everything from their McDonald’s burger to their cars are consumable. Some just last longer than others. Eventually everything breaks or wears out. Now I too think sporterizing a mil surp rifle is sacralige. But I myself purchased recently a Gewehr 98, a spandau 1914 production, for around $400. The barrel is shot out, the receiver is patinad and the stock is cracked. Ive puchased a new produced barrel made from stainless steal, a newly manufactured stock, and I’ve sent everything of to a gun smith to rebarrel, restock and refinish using modern materials such as cerakotes that mimick the original finish. I know refinishing a gun and rebarreling destroys the value. But by restoring this gun to look like it would’ve when it left spandau in may of 1914, I have a way of handing it down to my grand kids and preserving it for another hundred years. If your going to modify a mil surp for heavens sake keep what you do in the spirit of the original. Don’t add scope mounts or glow sights, scout rails, cut down the barrel or change the caliber.

    • @jeremyjames1659

The reason for the price increase has nothing to do with someone's bubba enfield. Surplus guns are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. When someone who has a UA-cam channel that gets thousands of views tells someone that a Swiss k31 is worth 500$ all day long and if they are seen at that price to grab them up then the prices of said gun has just been established.

Battlefield didn't feature any old rifles in their games until only a couple of years ago. At that point, the surplus market was already the way it is today. All these old rifles cost ridiculous amounts, and the prices seem to climb every month. Even the Turkish mausers that were dirt cheap a few years ago are getting expensive as hell. It feels pretty ridiculous to see something like a 91/30 going for like $350

I made a rule with my old guns where I will not remove anything not unless its a stock replacement. I love to protect the wood stock so it dosnt get hurt at the range. Iv learned very well that cheap dosnt mean cheaply made. My friend got an M1 garande for $800 and he said there might be something wrong but turns out there was nothing wrong and it works like a work horse none stop no jamming. Also I found that going to your local guns stores you can find some great deals.

Watching your videos convinced me to buy my first firearm, of course, a Mosin 91/30. What a hunk of junk garbage rod that was. I ended up selling it, and then trying it again a couple years later, after watching your video on cleaning up old surplus rifles. What a hunk of junk garbage that was, too. However, without a doubt you and Barry (oh do I miss him!) greatly influenced my growth as a gun owner, and I can also credit you and Barry with convincing me to buy my second, a Ruger 10/22, after seeing it repeatedly featured in your videos way back in the day. I still have that rifle and it is one I will never sell. So thank you.

I like to do low-level enhancements to potential collectable guns, like polishing certain surfaces of the internals to get smoother operations, making custom furniture/scales, yet keeping the originals safely stored, etc. Modifications that aren't permanent, or if they are permanent, they're internal and aiding in smoother operation. After all, if I'm shooting it, I want to enjoy it!

Some of the guns on your channel I never even knew they existed until I watched your video showing me not only it exist but helping me to understand how they function and all the history about them and even giving me a price estimate as well as if they are collectable or not. So thanks for making all the videos you make because, you have greatly helped me in my job on some of the guns that has came thru the shop.

The reality of the situation you did not really talk about is the fact that mil s urps are sold into two markets the shooters and collectors. Most people see the prices of collector grade guns and want that price for shooter grade guns. This and the shrinking availabilty of quantities of surplus guns over seas is what is driving prices up which is a normal cycle which has happened many times over the years.

When I was younger the only rifle I personally owned was an M1 Garand. I took the time to learn about the rifle, its history and how to safely reload for it. I then went to a gun show and started talking to an older gentlemen about the rifle. He then told me had an ammo can FULL of M1 Garand goodies that hed give me simply because I was a young teen who had an appreciation for older rifles. I actually found him again at the next gun show and he did indeed bring the ammo can. All he asked in return is that I pass my passion for old rifle forward to the next generation.

To be honest, I'm only slightly annoyed because the price of the K31 increased just before I got my hand on one. It's a fresh import from Switzerland, through Germany to Denmark. From the day I put my order, to the day I paid for it, the price increased 100€ (about the same in $). But for the money, I probably now have one of the most well preserved K31's. I absolutely love it. I only came to know about it through UA-cam (IV8888, MAC, BOTR etc.). I held one years ago, and thought nothing of it. Knowledge about it really peaked my interest.

New Chinese SKS rifles and 16" carbines for less than $90.00. All were stolen (along with my modern commercial guns) and sold at a pawn shop. It makes me sick to my stomach. I lost $1000's! Oh I certainly blame you people. I blame Bloke & Chap, Mark Novak, Tim at MAC, Eric, Chad, Othias, Dan & Danny at Milsurp World, Karl & “Gun Jesus”, Hickok45 and Mae.....yes, her too!. It’s all their fault that I’ve spent 3-5K this year alone on mil-surps & milsurp related stuff. My gun locker is full, the ammo cabinets are up to the gills and has spilled over to the utility closet....which BTW is stuffed with parts, spare magazines, bayonets, mil-spec cleaning kits, web gear.... When I plan a range day I fall into depression trying to decide whether it’ll be a Mauser day or an Lee Enfield day, or a Schmidt-Rubin day or a Garand day.... By the time I’m supposed to be on the road to the range I’m still standing there racked by indecision. And it’s all you people’s fault. I’m ready to give it all up and go back to fishing.

I think another thing you guys seem to be forgetting is that many folks that buy surplus guns don’t usually turn around and sell them. They retain value and if they are in someone’s possession for a lifetime, of course prices go up because supply on the market goes down. Hell, I was amazed that Luger’s started dropping in price until they were at the borderline $900-1000 range, until someone else explained to me a lot of these Lugers are coming from estate sales due to their owners finally passing on and family not wanting to keep them.

The imports have mostly dried up, so there is now limited supply. People discover something they want, they go on gunbroker and over pay.
    2. Bidding war, pride battles- something pops up and two or more people just keep bidding refusing to lose and rack up the bid way over the normal rate.
Finally local stores or sellers will go on and look at gunbroker prices then slap a tag on it for a price they liked. Since the supply is limited, sooner or later someone will pay it.

At my local gun show this spring a guy across from my table had an M1 Garand in his rack for $700. I didn't have the money on me at the moment so I thought man someone is going to get a deal this weekend. I had a couple cheaper rifles on my table and ended up selling both at a reduced rate to get that garand.
Prior to me buying it there was a guy who came up and proceeded to field strip it right there on the seller's table. He looked everything over and even managed to find someone at the show with a throat gauge and I overheard him say it was reading a 2 - 2.5.
As soon as he walked away I snatched it up and didn't even haggle on the price. Even told the seller jokingly I won't bother tearing it down either.... We both agreed the other guy missed out. It's definitely a shooter with few numbers matching but how the hell someone turns down a $700 garand I do not know.
The smaller shops/shows are where you will find decent deals.

I certainly appreciate the work you put into making videos about these old guns, Eric. I'm 24 but I love the old rifles from WWII and before and it's cool to see someone give them attention and respect. It was in large part thanks to your videos covering Mosin-Nagants that I bought my M91/30, my first and probably only rifle for a long time considering the lack of funds. Thanks for sharing the information that got me to buy a rifle that I hope to treasure and take care of for the rest of my life.

I knew a guy who cut his Mosin down to pistol length...botched the whole project up, and said "Eh whatever. It's just a cheap gun anyways." I was like....dude!!! I have an old Mosin I bought when I was 18 that I baby. I got it for 114 dollars. And now I am just trying my best to somehow bring it's glory back to life since I didn't know much about barrels getting pitted from crap with the salts in the primers. I still though baby this rifle now. I gotta take it to a professional gun smith one day.

Don't listen to those dopes who accuse you of "driving up the market". Many of these vintage guns are still a "steal". I am old enough to remember when the SKS's flooded the market in the 90's. I scoffed at them as "cheap chicom junk". I was an idiot. I now own 4 and will probably buy more. If I knew then what I know now I would have bought as many of them as I could have at $90. Many of these older firearms were built extremely well and are worth more than some of the junk rolling off the line today. The free market decides what firearms are worth, not people who have UA-cam channels and show us what these old war horses can do in the right hands. Keep doing what you are doing and ignore the morons. Nice job and thank you for your service to our country.

One thing to mention, someone might miss out on a gun because someone else got educated, but that same someone might also make a sale that nobody would be interested in without that same knowledge.
Prices may rise when word gets out, but also if everyone thought every single mosin was a garbage rod (which way too many people think they are) and them millions of mosins get shot out, left uncleaned, tossed in the trash, if there was only 10,000 mosins left the price would be much much higher than they are now with the knowledge and quantity available.

If you ask me, more people are buying surplus firearms as an investment and no longer for shooting. Meaning back when Turkish Mausers went for less than $100, some people would buy 10 and only keep 1 or 2 to shoot and sell the rest years down the road for a bigger fee. For me my first military surplus was a 1891 Mosin right before they went up in price

I've been in the surplus market for 35+ years, I love to shoot historical arms. Prices have indeed risen greatly ($79 SKSs, $99 Swedish mausers, $129 FN49s are apparently a thing of the past). Historically prices stay low as long as the guns are currently being imported. As soon as the supplies dry up prices start to rise to meet demand. As far as sporterizing goes, all surplus guns were common once upon a time, so if you want to cut one up, please start with one that someone has already worked on and not a virgin example. Just my 2 cents worth.

"all surplus guns were common once upon a time"
But according to Lord Moonshine himself, knower of all, supreme lord master of firearms has decreed that P210/P49 are just super rare, and collectable and they really, ya know, didn't make alot of them. And they're really expensive.

I buy mainly at auction, and there while there is some weight to the "media popularity = price increase" argument, at the end of the day there are a stack of other factors that dictate the price on the day. For every piece Ive picked up at the top end (or over the odds sometimes when the devil gets hold of me) Ive picked up another at well below its value, usually due to crappy catalogue descriptions Ive seen through. The best bargain I got was an amazing deal on a Baker rifle which I got at well below its value because the crowd on the day didnt know what it was.

Eric, you may have your share of detractors who give you the stink eye for what you do...but you have tons of folks who love what you do. I find it refreshing to watch videos you do on the Mosins and Mausers and Matchlocks. I have seem so many videos on AR-15s that I am sick to death of them. Granted, the AR-15 is a wonderful rifle...but I would trade a crate of overly accessorized ARs for one good Mosin or 1916 Spanish Mauser or even an old Rossi rimfire gallery (pump action) rifle. I love wood stocks, long barrels, and the smell of history if you will. Keep doing what you do....and I'll keep watching.

If it’s not expensive it's not good. That ring true in my mind and it is so ridiculous. I remember talking to a guy who offered seminars for free. Of course they were trolling for business. But he found that if he charged a nominal fee for the seminar he got much better attendance. Isn’t that crazy LOL, but it is exactly what you’re saying as far as value of firearms go.
Anyhow, I see how you were saying how valuable it is to disseminate not only the historical value, but the history of firearms in general.
To end: Thanks for the reminder to support the gun channels and the other channels one watches. And, thumbs up to gun archaeology.

It depends how you look at it. If you believe surplus weapons over a certain age are actually antiques then the attitude should be that you don't really own it, you are just looking after it for a while. If there really are hundreds of thousands or millions then by all means replace the stock and foregrip. However I would argue that you should keep the original furniture tucked away somewhere out of harms way to re-fit in the future.

Its also important to note that when prices go up on a gun, it means that gun you may also have in your possession goes up. Haha so for me whenever I buy a gun it more likely than not goes up in value over time meaning I can sell it or trade on up.
