Even then, motorists were still trying to beat the train.
Father in law RV Ton was a fireman on the EJ&E until 1975.
Cool video, just wish they would've took EJ&E Porter Branch, or the Joliet Cuttoff, (which was the Michigan Central, later the New York Central), would've loved to have seen that!
Very Cool!
This had to be a Fairmount speeder .That's why no gates would lower and it slowed down quickly to avoid cars .There were no trucks with track wheels back then . They didn't start using them till the 80s . Wish this had sound but very cool film to watch and shows you a view that was never seen by most.
Not true. Hi rail equipment was in use from the mid 1950s for management. Standard autos with rail gear. Hi rail trucks for regular track inspection came into widespread use in the mid 1960s. My first inspection as a rail employee was in a 1972 Ford F150. Some US roads and the Canadians held out until the early 1990s, which is why so many surviving speeders are ex Canadian.
...And the crossing gates are not operational because this was filmed on a hi-rail truck
Ahhh....the cursed Broad Street Tracks.Hope your not in any hurry to pee or maybe bleeding to death.Growing up in extreme southern Griffith....these tracks were well used and every 20 minutes there was a choo choo heading your way.....then would stop....hold up traffic....piss people off.Just a memory of my youth that i care not to think about.
one thing that is that all of the cn traffic they could sure use more lines that they had and lost because the cn is definitely over taxing this area see a lot of trains sitting waiting clearance to move they could have used that c&o line and that ej&e east line to ease traffic congestion
wish it went to Ivanhoe!
Way off... first that is not the C&O mainline to the right it is the EJ&E/EL interchange. The second note is not to the C&O it is another switch to the EL. The third is not to the EL, it is the EJ&E/C&O interchange and it also loops around to the GT. You got Broad St, EL main, and GT main correct. EJ&E "east" was called the Porter Branch.
I'd love to know when this video was shot. It passes behind an apartment building I lived in so it's possible my car is in the parking lot.
I can see my house 4:49
If you don't mind me asking, what town is your house in at the 4:49 mark? I moved to Portage in 2019, and my house backs up to the Prairie Duneland Trail. I've been trying to do some research on the EJ&E, but I can't find many historical pictures of the area. I'm trying to time stamp some of the locations in this video, but I'm not having any luck.
OOOOOpsy.....I farted
45th Street is my fav crossing, I never knew it never had cantilevers before, 45th went through many gates, the one in this video, then it had cantilevers, now it has 4 quad gates. Interesting. Love the video
