Hate that G82 looks so not aggressive, doesn't have those muscle flared hips as g80 and g87 has. From the silhouette it is looks just like a regular 4 series.
My theory….. In England, they tested a 2021 G80 M3 Comp 2 wheel drive vs 2023 G87 M2 automatic. The M3, at the wheels did 530 hp and 522 lb-ft torque. The M2 did 469 hp and 448 lb-ft torque. This is a major difference but they ran both cars on the US equivalent of 93-94 octane gas. Now the M3 Comp runs at 24.7 psi on the turbos where the M2 runs at 17.4 psi…according to Car & Driver magazine. My theory is it’s the 91 octane cheap gas in the US. I’m guessing the M3 is spooling down the turbos by the engine management system to accommodate no knocking on 91 octane gas. It’s not letting the turbos go to 24.7 psi. So in effect, the M3 gets detuned to close of the M2’s 17.4 psi. I’m guessing that if both cars were running 93 octane, the M3/M4 would walk away from the M2. Of course, the west coast states only offer 91 octane premium (in Oregon, we get 92 octane), everywhere else 91. So it’s not the M2 putting out more power, it’s the M3/M4 Comp putting out less power, because of the 91 octane gas. Just a theory.
I can see where you’re coming from but tell me why the M2 doesn’t get detuned from bad gas but the M4 does? That means it’s 503 “on very good gas in good conditions” and the M2 is 453 all the time no matter the conditions and gas.. just doesn’t add up.
I’m thinking it’s boost related…trying to get 24.7 psi boost on 91 octane might only let the car go to say 20 psi and the M2 might actually go to say 19 psi (BMW lies). Therefore they are very close in power and thus the same acceleration, factoring in weight difference. Or the M2 boosts to 17.4 psi and the M3/M4 only boosts to say 18 psi on 91 octane. I would dump a can of octane booster into the M4 and leave the M2 on 91 octane, then run the cars again. If the M4 pulls away from the M2, my theory is correct…again if no difference in acceleration, I’m full of it. Sort of like running your M2 on 87 octane gas vs 91 octane. The M2 will run on 87 but the knock sensors will back off the timing, and back off the power. The engine management system runs the show.
My takeaway is that BMW underrated the M2 a lot more than usual, and just said 453 so it doesn’t encroach on M3/M4 territory on paper…Wouldn’t really be fair to race a car with supposedly 50 more hp and put octane booster vs my m2 rated at 453 and on 91 gas lol..
When I had my E92 M3, someone dynoed their car on 91 octane and then again after a few tanks of 100 octane. On 100 octane, the E92 M3 made 35 hp and 40 lb-ft more, at the wheels. Of course at about $10/gallon for 100 octane, it’s not worth the money for 35 hp. It’s sort of like running E80 vs 91 octane…there’s a difference in power. What you could do is compare the boost maximums as both cars have a boost gauge. That way you could compare the boosts…M2 max is supposedly 17.4 psi and the M4 is supposedly 24.7 psi max. I would have one person drive the car in various gears while the other person watches and records the boost.
Being an A90 Supra owner and having it constantly compared to the M2, BMW is absolutely under estimating their engine output. They are giving you WHP #s not BHP #s like here in the US. A couple bolt ons later and it's dyno-ing close to 525hp on gas. It weighs 3200lbs and yes it makes a huge difference especially in a roll from 40-50mph. Not a great drag car due to RWD spinning but if it were AWD it would be right there with the M2. Not surprised here, the M2 is a beast of a little sports car
My 2020 M5 Comp is rated 617HP but Dyno’s at 660. This is typical of BMW. If you look. M5s have dyno’d from 640- 670. Stock. Milne is no longer stock and dynos at 770 HP. They are not all exactly the same out of the factory and ALWAYS underrated HP.
Bad fuel on the m4. Trust me, these new b58 and s58 engines are very octane sensitive. Also run half a tank, not 1/4 tank. Dump all his fuel and make sure he's running proper 91 or 93 octane and you'll see the differences.
@@JVette01But I guarantee you both didn't fill up at the same pump. Different stations, different quality of gasoline, and that's regardless of the pump sticker saying 91oct.
@@JVette01I tune these cars JVette01. Obviously you shouldn't be pulling a stock G82 rwd competition from a roll in a stock M2, so I'm just giving you some of the most obvious reasons why you are. He most likely has bad gas. Though the pump said 91oct, it could be 89oct and the car will pull a lot of timing. I went from running 60-130 in 9.3 seconds bone stock from my regular gas station that sells 93oct to 9.7 because of a bad tank of gas from another station that also sold 93oct. It doesn't matter what the pump sticker says for octane if the gas is bad. That's my assessment based on experience with these platforms. These cars are very octane sensitive. I'm not stock anymore, and I'm currently running a 5.0-5.2 60-130 with port injection, e60 tune (done by myself), downpipes, and intakes. If you just mix 2 gallons of e85 to a full tank of 91oct you will see what I mean. The stock tune will pick up more power just from doing that.
I’ve tried mixing a bit of e in the past and it didn’t do anything for my m2. I appreciate your feedback, but to blame it on somehow getting bad gas just seems like a reach
Maybe he had a bad tank of gas and was pulling timing. An M3/M4 really does make more power than an M2 but it’s way up in the RPM. It’s like the last 500 RPM the M2 torque curve dips down but the M3/M4 stays more flat making like 40 more at the wheels. Or maybe your engine is a little looser because you do so many races with it. Whats the milage on each car? My G87 felt like it really opened up after 5k miles or so, and it’s not the weather because it’s warmer now.
Nice comparison. Next time for rolls if you didn’t already have both cars setup the M2 button to be: Sports plus, D3, DSC fully off, suspension in comfort (better weight transfer). If you want to shift yourself, S3 for trans and start in 3rd gear. I have an M4 comp xdrive that runs consistent 11.1s at 123-124mph and 0-60 in 3.0-3.1. The RWD comp should actually be faster from a roll than the X-drive if the car is healthy (Clean air filters, good gas in it etc.). If you’re running ACN 91 in both cars it’ll limit the M4 Comp more due to knock retard as the M4 has higher boost targets/more aggressive tune.
according to the numbers there should be some difference at least during the roll m4 rwd 100-200 kph is around 7.7/7.8 m2 100-200 kph is around 8.7/8.8 anyway those re 2 beautiful cars and thx for vid
dynoed my g87 and got over 500 at the crank (I actually may be the guy in town he's referring to in the vid. lol)... BMW says the 2025 m2 has more hp than the 2023 and 2024 models but really I think they're just admitting what they put in the first gen g87s. lol edit: and I used to own a g80 xdrive and the only difference I can tell is some more lower down tq/grunt compared to my g87, which is a 6 speed... so the longer gearing in the manual may have more to do with that than the "hp/tq difference"
Would you mind providing a comparison of ownership between the G87 and G80X? Currently have an FBO N55 and have been wanting to get into a G82X for a while, just haven't gotten around to pulling the trigger.... but the G87 has been growing on me a lot and the shorter wheelbase and boxy design is giving me R34 vibes and I really have come to like it. @@donnierion9347 all the g8x's are so good and fast its really gonna come down to preference. (used to own an f80 cs and the g8x are night and day better imo)... as far as comparison between the g80x and the g87, the g80x is obviously quicker off the line, hooks better, and feels more planted than the rwd g87. Over 4k rpm you don't really notice a difference in terms of speed tho (prob at 3.3k for the auto you wouldn't notice a difference. I have the longer geared 6 speed). the g87 is a bit more nimble but we're splitting hairs in terms of handling and speed between the models. Its really going to come down to what you need the car for. I live in vegas so can run a RWD car year around as it rarely rains and there's no snow. plus its my weekender so the g87 makes more sense than a g80 xdrive. but if you wanted a do it all daily that you can also be a hooligan in (you can get the rear out in both RWD mode and MDM mode with the xdrives), the g80/g82 xdrive would be the pick. Ride quality WAY better as well. Interior a little dated though and depreciation is iffy. Nice car though! I've never driven an M2, but wouldn't be surprised if it's a lot nicer than the m4. Traction stability control has numerous modes u can put it on and an option to turn it off. With the M drivers package it gives u even more of a range of abilities. Looks would definitely be a solid reason. Not everyone will want the M2 looks or M4 looks, so at this point it’s which one you prefer plus a bit more space in the m4

would be super interesting to take both cars to the dyno, if you have the means to. i know bmw underrates the m2 but still, makes no sense after seeing the xdrive roll races
This is true. We’ll have to set that up one day
Hate that G82 looks so not aggressive, doesn't have those muscle flared hips as g80 and g87 has. From the silhouette it is looks just like a regular 4 series.
That is true. Would’ve been nice if they gave it a widebody. However, it is a good looking car imo grilles aside.
Heat and octane limited. They are both equal. Give it more octane and cooler weather the factory tune on the comp can then take advantage of it.
Interesting take. Perhaps
This is the correct answer. Timing and power is optimized depending on ethanol content
Using this logic, you’d be saying the m4 is affected by heat and octane but the m2 isn’t when it’s the same exact powertrain.
@@JVette01 isn’t it possible his fuel is worse though? Did you fill up at the same pump?
Doubt it. We both use 91. I actually use Costco 91 in my m2 and it works great
My theory…..
M2 weighs almost 3800 lbs
I have same 2024 M4 in same colour but Xdrive. Colour looks awesome in that sun

Great video gents!
Thanks!
M5 is a boat though
you gotta manual shift into the gear you want to start at but then shift it back into D once you get going to get the best shifts
I do that when I'm not holding the camera. When I hold the camera, I leave it in D, downshift, then take off and it will still auto upshift
Need to manual shift in manual mode and as u take off, shift back to D mode for auto upshifting and for it to stay in gear
Bad fuel on the m4. Trust me, these new b58 and s58 engines are very octane sensitive. Also run half a tank, not 1/4 tank. Dump all his fuel and make sure he's running proper 91 or 93 octane and you'll see the differences.
He's definitely running 91... we both have the same crappy 91 octane and fuel level was the same
@@JVette01But I guarantee you both didn't fill up at the same pump. Different stations, different quality of gasoline, and that's regardless of the pump sticker saying 91oct.
@@BlackWhiteBeast I tried to make this test as apples to apples as possible and now you're bringing up not filling up at the same pump... lol.. okay.
He has more miles than mine. He was around 8k I think I have around 5k
this car fun AF. you do have to learn it though to have the most fun!!!
We put them in all the right modes
according to the numbers there should be some difference at least during the roll
m4 rwd 100-200 kph is around 7.7/7.8
m2 100-200 kph is around 8.7/8.8
anyway those re 2 beautiful cars and thx for vid
Yeah I’ve seen those videos too which is why I’m so confused on the results. The m4 should be smoking me
I've seen many G87 doing 8.4s 100-200 even official autotopnl time is 8.4s I think
dynoed my g87 and got over 500 at the crank (I actually may be the guy in town he's referring to in the vid. lol)... BMW says the 2025 m2 has more hp than the 2023 and 2024 models but really I think they're just admitting what they put in the first gen g87s. lol
edit: and I used to own a g80 xdrive and the only difference I can tell is some more lower down tq/grunt compared to my g87, which is a 6 speed... so the longer gearing in the manual may have more to do with that than the "hp/tq difference"
Thanks for sharing!
I live in the Midwest so snow/wet is a regular thing for several months of the year. If they made a G87 with Xdrive I'd be kicking down the dealership door to get on the allocation list.
BUT if you do decide on RWD, I would def go with the g87. its just a slightly more fun and better all around package for that set up (and looks slightly better to my eyes).
@@js002003 awesome info! Thank you for taking the time to write that up. Considering it would be my only car in the Midwest, the G82X seems like the play. it is not so relevant, but it’s kind of important. With BMW cars they run different boost curves between 8 sp automatic and 6 sp manual models. Automatic runs much higher boost especially in the midrange and that’s one of the reasons why it is faster than a manual.
Both cars are automatic in this video, but thanks for the information

Agreed. However, some people prefer the styling of the m4 more.
@@JVette01 Definitely. Question is…is that styling worth that much more money (if you’re not going XDrive)
I like the styling of the m2, so for me, no. However, I can see how others still prefer the m4.
The M4 has aero mods and a reinforced chassis for the actual track. Not good for drag "racing" unless you get xDrive and a ton of power mods.
And the M2 doesn’t have those things?
@@JVette01 your friend has aftermarket aero and yes the M4 chassis is built different. There’s a reason why it’s heavier and there’s an M4 GT3 but not an M2 GT3
@@HaloDude557 You think that's the reason it lost/neck and neck with the M2?
@@JVette01 the weight difference is probably more than 100+ lbs because of optional packages, and the aero will be additional drag. You could even speculate that the elevation and heat hurt the boost advantage for the M4 comp’s power band. 10% more hp is not a significant margin and it slims even more with other variables.
1. The weight difference is not more the 100lbs. We weighed them both. They're within 20-30lbs of each other.
2. Yes, that would be a speculation, but I'd assume the same exact engine would respond the same to the outside variables.
3. 50hp is HUGE on a car that weighs around the same, it should be running away from me in the rolls.
That M2 moves bro

the issue is the M4 only weighing 50lbs more than the M2, there should be like 400 lbs difference atleast

No. Both ACN 91 octane
My brother had a 21' M4 comp rwd and absolutely hated it! Noisy brakes that sounded like a bus, very intrusive traction/stability control where its hard to enjoy WOT acceleration at normal speeds, and a very unforgiving ride quality in any mode. The harsh ride may not be an issue in you neck of the woods out in the desert, but living in the north east, the M4 is a terrible commuter.

The RWD was traction limited down low, but started to pull a little at high speeds, after 120mph. Makes sense with less drivetrain power loss and a little lighter than the xdrive.
Not all M cars are harsh. Ive driven the M5 and it feels and is a lot faster than the M3/M4.
