I think you're doing a grand job documenting all this GCR history. I lived at Helmdon 1967 - 1973. Only 8 yrs old the line had just closed, the tracks were still there and I watched them being lifted in 1968. What a fantastic adventure playground it was for us young kids. I've returned regularly over the years only to witness the remains of the GCR slowly disappear. Very soon now it will all be gone, there will be nothing left only your videos and other documented writings and photos. Enjoy your videos, excellent work.
I appreciate your message. I’m glad you enjoy the videos I think the same myself , even in the last 25 to 30 years I’ve been covering the GCR as my own interest it’s changed and especially wiped out by HS2 in my area.
I've been to the site today and got some smashing shots of the Station House, platforms and viaduct, thanks for inspiring the likes of me, it's most appreciated.
Many thanks, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I just love anything to do with this line and like so many of the other GCR buildings I am taken back by the immaculate engineering of that beautiful bridge.
I was pleased to see the demolition of the GCR. The biggest white elephant line ever. The viaducts and bridges should be demolished too. A maintenance and safety liability.
Great video mate! I always get very sentimental when I think of the old GCR, don’t know why!! First got an interest in the line when my dad took me to Loughborough as a kid on the steam railway. Then we visited Catesby. I’m from Northampton originally so I used to visit places locally too. It was a line before its time and surplus to requirements pretty much from day 1.
The more I watch this video, the more I want to get down to the site and clear away the brambles and bracken!!! I'm sure the site could be tidied up magnificently with full exposure of the platforms, what a sight that would be. If you ever hear of that happening please advertise it on your channel, I'd be straight down there from Lincolnshire.
Hi guys, I’m maybe buying a piece of this land and have found a platform of sorts next to a hole of sorts. The hole might be a cess pit or it might be a artificial well that I’ve read about. It’s about 150m away from the Station house going towards Helmdon not Brackley. Any ideas what these are by any chance please? (It’s the 11th hour for me). Thanks!
@@NWP_EXPLORING I am indeed a Helmdonite. Well, I’m not sure what it is, except to say that it is pretty much where a map claims there is a cattle pen of sorts. Old pit, for what? It’s brick lined, I know.
Fantastic piece of work NWP, I really enjoy your videos on the GCR. Is the station accessible from the road by the infilled bridge, you seemed to come up the slope and popped out onto Station Road. I'm off down that way next month, so want to include some visits and get some photos at Helmdon Station, the viaduct, Catesby Tunnel and viaduct too.
@@NWP_EXPLORING No problem, I follow you, Middy Explores, Wobbly Runner and Trekking Exploration UK, all great value. Is Helmdon Station site easily accessible?
Has anyone sern the book about the Great Central railway....its called...Main Line Lament....i have a copy...its full of black and white photos...cost me £3.60 in 1974...GC stands for....Gone Completely now....Bob...Paignton....

Nice work lads…

Very true, many people are passionate about it . Slowly being lost to nature now

I’ve got a couple of people interested in getting involved in clearing up the platform. Just need to find out who owns it.
@@NWP_EXPLORING That's great news, just let me know if you find out, and if it's 'game on' I'll come down to help.
That filled in bridge was not at helmdon but at culworth .I now I'vwalked the bridge at helmdon
Still a good video.
Keep up the good work.
No it was Helmdon. Culworth doesn’t have any side walls. That’s where we are walking
Such a fascinating and once proud mainline railway. It's incredible to see it slowly but surely being consumed by nature. Did you keep the insulators?

if you are on about the coal/good platform then that’s what it is.
the hole is an old pit but unconfirmed.
are you local?

@@seamusmcevoy2011 yes very easy,
Walked by many as a favourite local dog walking area right up and over the viaduct
@@NWP_EXPLORING That's brilliant, thanks very much for the info.
Its a long time since the coal trains used to come along here on route to Neasden in London hauled by WD 280 locomotives...
Would be so nice too get it all cleared and maybe restore the station into a light railway as lots still remaining
These lines could have been used for freight to this day....classic case of Government waste....!!
Whats the point in looking back in time...good to know people are interested ..but its so sad.....Bob...Paignton...
