    The Spitfire's Name. It was Supermarine's Chairman, Robert McLean, who chose the name Spitfire, after his daughter's nickname.
    The term "spitfire" dates back to Elizabethan times and was used to describe a young girl with a fiery personality.

    While the Spitfire got the glory, the Hurricane shot down more enemy aircraft, due to a higher number in service. The Mk IX was generally considered the nicest version.

    let me be clear, i think the spit is one of the best fighters ever made.
    but of you read the germans who actually fought it, and not the propaganda, they mostly thought it was a one trick pony. it certainly wasnt nightmare fuel for them
