  • Is your pond leaking water? Today I want to show you how to seal a pond naturally with pigs. On our farm, we had a pond that leaked water. I could have bought a pond liner but that would have been expensive and would have required a lot of labor. I also could have tried a chemical pond sealer but I'm confident that wouldn't have fixed my problem. Instead, I decided to let me pigs have free access to my pond. Not only did they stop it my pond from leaking, the it is also much healthier now.

    It’s called gleying. Or to gley the pond.it’s a combination of their hooves packing it and thief poop making a natural seal.

    geese and ducks are a better option becase they have a certain type of bacteria in the poop that block the soil..... and the pond will actually increase

      That’s very interesting. I’m planning to build a pond purely for our geese, rather than the kids pool they use currently. So geese poop will actually help seal the pond?

      Same! The only pigs I may be able to have in my town is guinea pigs and I don’t think they will work! The soil here is not high in clay content . Now I need to find a clay source and what to use to pound it!

    Dissolve duck manure in water. Apply around the pond.
    The problem will be algae in the summer for a few years.

      I want to have a wildlife pond in my backyard. I’ve had koi ponds in the past and the water was crystal clear because I used a homemade biological filter with varying sizes of course gravel. I recirculated the pond water to it using a small underwater pump protected with screening. (Actually, I was protecting all the critters from it.). I will be putting fish and shrimp in the pond- they will eat the algae. I’ve gotten some great information from the video and comments. I was thinking of using a plastic or rubber lining that had been removed from a pond but don’t like the idea simply because I am trying to be environmentally conscious. Some people claim that they break down over time. If I can use compacted clay with duck and pig poop, great!
      The whole point was to improve the environment for the wildlife. I moved back to my childhood neighborhood after 50 years and it is devoid of everything- birds, frogs, lizards, rabbits… I do have a couple of squirrels and a crow once in a while. I scared a 5’ long black snake today. It is a 3/4 acre lot with climax deciduous trees with a free flowing stream across the back. I expected it to be teeming with wildlife. I hung a bird feeder with food last fall. The food is still in it! ☹️

      I'm not sure. Pigs love rolling around in the mud which helps. But I would think any animal that hangs around the water long enough and is heavy enough to compact the soil would help some.

    How do you manage their manure?
    If manure seals, do you muck into the water or muck as usual? My pigs always toilet half in their wallow (if in a pen vs rotational grazing in the woods), half in a particular corner

    • @Farmhacker

      I have extended a paddock into this pond area so they aren't trapped around the pond. They have other areas out in the field they can go and do their business. They do sometimes produce manure around the pond but there's not much I can do about that.

    How long has the pond been sealed by the pigs? I was just curious if this one winter afterwards because ponds normally hold more water in the winter right? The real test would be the following summers. Has it stood up to multiple summers yet?

    • @Farmhacker
      @Farmhacker  3 роки тому +4

      The original video was shot a few years ago and the pond has continued to hold more water. I understand that all ponds and soil types are not the same though so, for others, it may be good to add them again in the future for maintenance.

    • @Farmhacker
      @Farmhacker  3 роки тому +1

      I wish I had the answer to that but I don't since there are many different variables at play. My soil is silty clay loam so I have a higher clay content than you if that helps at all. But that doesn't

    I have a backyard few acres that are sand. Pure sand with two natural ravines and a steepish slope dropping down about 50 feet across the breadth of the land. I want a pond back there. The geology is over 8-10 feet of sand. Will pigs wallowing work on pure sand?
