The Final Hour | Ollie's Hour Record Attempt
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Come the man, come the hour - and this is going to be a significant hour for Ollie as he attempts to beat Eddy's 1972 benchmark of 49.431km ridden in just one hour. Will the training pay off? Will a bling track machine and tons of aero tech allow Ollie to cheat the wind and come up trumps against one of the greatest of all time? Whatever happens, it will be over in an hour...

Thanks for the kind words and comments everyone. Really glad you enjoy the content.
No resting on your lorrels Ollie. Next. Another day awaits.
I'm a relatively new cyclist and I'm eating up any and all content I can on the sport. This is some of the best material I've seen or read yet. While I'm not attempting hour records, I think we can all relate to those times when we're pushing ourselves beyond our perceived limits.
I had goosebumps watching your final lap. Thanks.
Well done mate, I've enjoyed the journey with you, all be it from the comfort of my sofa! Hats off to you pal.
Congratulations Ollie! You have inspired me a lot since your first videos!!
Months of no beer. Must be a tough pill to swallow for no record. But good effort mate :-)
That was one of the greatest amateur sporting achievements I've ever seen. Merckx said it was the worst thing he'd ever done and Wiggins hated it, chapeau and double chapeau Ollie, what an incredible performance. Well done is insufficient.
Hats off to Ollie but lets not forget that both Boardman and Obree were amateurs when they started duking it out for the hour record. IMHO, Boardman's hour record in the superman position that he did in Manchester in 96 should stand as the current record.
Lance with doping... quit training from it
HOLY $#[+!!! ... NVM Merckx's Hour, Ollie just BEAT Fausto Coppi's Hour by Almost 2 KMS! That Record stood for 14 YEARS until Jacques Anquetil beat it in '56. But WAIT ... Ollie even BEAT Anquetil's Record by almost 1.5 km!!! Hell even Anquetil's DISQUALIFIED (probably drug induced) 2nd Record 11 yrs. Later was STILL SLOWER than Ollie's.
"The 48 km. Barrier" wasn't even Broken till '67 and has only been broken by 3 Pros:
Ferdi Bracke
Ole Ritter
Eddy Merckx.
C'mon GCN ... You should have MENTIONED this in the Video!
"Came up Short" ... My @$$ ...
Ollie Kicked MAJOR @$$!!!
DAMN That was IMPRESSIVE!!!
EPIC RIDE OLLIE!!!
This comment deserves a GCN like, Ollie!!
The current world record is 55.083km. 47.593km is 86.4% of that pace. Astoundingly good for an amateur!
@@DMalek It's too brash for a like from me.
Yes but aero.
As a fellow "physiologically unremarkable amateur" I have to say that was absolutely amazing! YOU brother have inspired this middle aged American, who started exercising again to stay off medications, to keep going with a smile. OLLIE, OLLIE, OLLIE!!!!
: Stay strong Nathan!
Nice!
thats great matey. what meds? arthritis?
Absolute magic. In my books Ollie you are a STAR ! The fact that you really had nothing to gain is truly inspiring, which makes the commitment to the project and seeing it through to the last second all the more admirable.
But he did gain.. I'd say a lot.
47 kph is still a massive achievement given the fact that he ended up only 4 percent slower than Eddie Merckx, with just 3 months training as an "ungifted" amateur rider. You really upped your game as a cyclist - with a little help on the tech front - and we all know how hard it is to achieve only little gains when you've reached a certain level.
Exactly, even using a dumb trainer on zwift i only manage 41.5 Km in 1 hour
@@wawanlapandua still very good. no need to put yourself down, 99.9% of all humans on this planet can't achieve it.
I wouldn't compare it to Merckx, as Merckx road on a traditional track bike. I would compare it to some other attempts by professionals, like Marc Dubois setting a Swiss record at 48.337, less than a km better than Ollie. There are some serious attempts just below or above 50K/hr setting national records, like Wojciech Ziolkowski in Poland, Gustav Larsson (Sweden). Ollie can proudly stand in between those guys.
thanks for the spoiler
Great effort! This just shows how cycling is really about the athlete, not the equipment. Eddy had a steel round tubed bike with drop bars, box section rims and even flat pedals, and still went 2km/h faster, that is insane!
I noticed he beat the time of Anquetil. What does that suggest? Also Merckx rode at altitude, which is a substantial difference. I think the technological and training advances are clearly apparent in allowing an amateur to touch greatness.
And crazy to think boardman went 56kmh on a bike!!!!
He didn't beat the great and underrated Ferdi Bracke (48.093) either, who broke the record in Rome (hence, at low altitude), and did so 5 years before Merckx.
@@christianmatheron6444 Nicely said, I think the same. Incredible feat regardless
Thanks for the correction.
"OLLIE, OLLIE, OLLIE" did anyone else choke up a little after that? Such a great video GCN, one of the best to date!
And such a salt of the earth guy...
You may not have beaten Eddy but to beat the other legend Jacques Anquetil (47,493) is a heroic achievement.
Allister Lovett thanks for pointing that out! That’s mad! 👍🏼😦
But thank you for that spoiler!!! 😡
@@jenslundberg410 Reading comments and not expecting spoilers. :D

Great job Ollie, 3 months without a pint. Now that's mental toughness!
My salute to this! o7
This is one of the best things I've seen in cycling, let alone GCN, in quite a while. Congrats Ollie for embracing the challenge and going for it.
Well done Olli. I was there with my son and daughter and we really enjoyed it ! Magnificent 👍
I loved that pint and crossword I was doing. Never knew you captured it on film though.
Right on Ollie! You're a hero to all us "less than gifted" amateurs. Its the effort that counts. Caught me in my cackles. 👍👌
This and the whole series of videos for this challenge have been absolutely fantastic. Congratulations on a savage ride and associated journey to this point. Would happily watch a long form version of all parts together!
Holder of the GCN hour record UNTIL........ Dan Lloyd dons a speed suit and rips around fueled by pork scratchings and ale 😂😂
Incredible ride Ollie, I think everyone was willing you to do it just to give that hope to all us normal riders that we can all improve with focus and commitment, what an advert for the Sufferfest and commitment :-)
Thoroughly enjoyed this series Ollie! As a physiological unremarkable individual who has come into athletic pursuits quite late but fallen in love with cycling and all the tech and exercise science that goes with it, it’s so awesome to be able to watch a non-pro have a crack at something like this.
What an effort! 47km/h+ for an hour... that’s a brilliant achievement in itself.
I bet you enjoyed that first beer 🍺 afterwards.
: Is there a reason why this event wasn't streamed live despite all the promo around it? I was hyped and now it's over and I didn't watch it :(
MUCH worse than that, they GAVE AWAY the result in a throwaway IG clip during a GCN Show the other day. I've never been so staggered in my life.
I know, I was bummed we couldn't watch!!
Could of made a documentary on it and I would of watched every minute!
This is so inspiring. And so gutsy. To start from scratch and announce to the world your intention. That takes guts. My hat is off to you sir. 👍
For some reason this got me kind of emotional. I know how hard the struggle towards a goal can be. You made and you gave it your all. That's inspiring!
Same.... But for all the right reasons. Amazing effort that man!
“Physically unremarkable amateur” I spit my coffee on my ipad when I heard it. lolol.
Just a casual 300 watt FTP whilst my ass which has been training for 2 years is only at 255 watts.
assuming the weight of something like 65 to 70 kg, his wt/kg is something around 4.2-4.5, which is equal to a strong althelete but probably not the one taking the top 5 place of 'power' challenges, like zwift cat. A races (where strategy does not matter)
Super-impressive effort regardless, you need to be strong both physically and mentally to even have a crack at this; training, tools and tech all take a back seat in comparison!
That was brilliant. Happy for Ollie. What an amazing achievement and what the hell, 47493m in 1 hr? That is world class. Gosh, that was so inspiring.
Ollie you sir are a beast! My heart was in my throat as you were getting ready to start.
All of the effort and dedication that you put into this is truly awesome. It has been the best series that GCN has ever done. I'm so proud of you. Things like this are the reason you are my favorite presenter. You bring heart and humor not to mention dedication to what you do. Well done you.
Joshuavoice29 thanks mate. Really glad you enjoyed it
I think its the best group of videos GCN have done, it was great watching the progression, and the tech stuff, and of course the final attempt, huge effort,
You Legend, Ollie. Loved the series. What an inspiration. Well done.
Absolutely incredible! Man I was smiling from ear to ear and getting emotional watching this! Congratulations, Ollie! Well freakin Done! I applaud you.
that was strangely emotional. i can't think of anyone i would watch trying to do an hour record more than Ollie. it was both beautiful and rather humbly put. thank you for this. special !
I really loved seeing all the people supporting Ollie.
yup, cheering people and Hank, that was really cute! Ollie you've got good friends
Really inspirational Olly, an epic training effort that shows everyone, no matter what level, that they can achieve more than they thought. It also puts into perspective just how incredible Eddy's hour was nearly fifty years ago. You're a star Olly. What's next?
Nothing less than awesome. I truly admire your dedication and effort...as well as your respect for the man, Eddy.
This feels so motivational , GCN is just magic , one day i'l look back and remember the boom of data GCN gave me throught my first years of cycling.
For me personally, you were the best of GCN when you got here (for me specifically) and this story is some of the best videography, plus your character, humor, eloquence, and attitude make you my favorite. Sorry folks.
Great effort mate . Just how fast could Eddie have gone with all that aero help!! Mind blowing. Still incredible effort from you Ollie
Nic Christie the help that Eddy did have however might have made the same difference
@@portakalcan Drugs
Eddy is the greatest of all time. All I'm saying is WITH all of the aero help Ollie had, if he was on the gear EM was on back in the day he'd probably have come a lot closer.
I know this is totally out of left field, but anyone else ever wonder how a video game speed runner would do on a challenge like this? Might seem laughable at first, but the whole mental aspect of this challenge is what made me think of it, plus GCN stresses the "average physiological" aspect of the experiment. Speed runners have to have a razor sharp focus for multiple hours at a time, grinding for months to get to that point (training), and exhaustively researching every possible avenue of minute gains that add up to a whole. I think it would be really interesting to see how that community would tackle this particular problem.
No beer for 3 months? Thats an achievement in itself! :) jokes aside, amazing effort! Congrats
Ollie, very inspiring for all of us. From a fellow chemist, you were definitely in a pi star state!
Congratulations, mate, you are in a small handful of athletes; an Everest and an Hour Record, you put a lot of other riders to shame.
What is a Everest?
ToykoVersace accumulating the same vertical distance in one ride as you would if you were biking up Everest. Basically you find the steepest hill in your area and bike up and down it for a day; it’s a suffer fest.
@@anthonymigash583 I wouldn't necessarily do the steepest. One that doesn't have steep gradients would work a lot better actually :) As you can get up with a sustainable effort.
@@dvaneg98 .... or you can do an vEverest on Zwift ... I made a single attempt so far and made it halfway before I bagged it - Zwift disconnected me so i glad i put in as i was absolutely crashed out ... I'll try it again but I'll do it when I not coming off a 10 hour workday thinking I can then do 12 more hours on the bike ... that was a serious mistake!
@@anthonymigash583 Thanks, sounds crazy. My track bike has a 50 15 gear ratio and tour with 400 altitude metres is already hard enough
You're just fucking cool! Since you started this crazy experiemce I was always supporting you. Respect!
29mph for 1 hours is amazing - for 10 mins is amazing!!!! Wow
I became emotionally overwhelmed from Ollie's effort and the production of this great attempt of which I have followed throughout this process. What a fantastic achievement....My only question is, how do you become a GCN presenter having not been a professional rider ?, and if there was ever an opportunity to become a presenter who could represent the avid weekly cyclist then I'm up for this challenge just as Ollie was for this one. Chapeau GCN
One of the most exciting and emotional YT videos I have ever seen. I felt like I was on the start line at the beginning.
What a production and what a presenter, this has been a fantastic series to follow. Good to hear your mental state and preparation for working through the pain. Your a star fella, enjoy the rest. All the best Andy
"I got leaner" bit of an understatement there ollie lad ive seen more meat on a butchers apron good effort you mad bugger bet that first beer will taste awsome
From all of us at The Sufferfest, congratulations on an absolutely epic ride. Your dedication, focus, and trust in the process is truly inspiring. Ultimately, it's not how far you rode that matters, it's how far you've come as an athlete over the past three months. You know you can dig deeper, go harder, and overcome self-doubt to accomplish truly remarkable things. We're proud to be a part of your journey. Remember: once a Sufferlandrian, always a Sufferlandrian. Hats off to you, Dr. Bridgewood.
Hank's voice breaks tho XD
This has been such a great series. Thank you for bringing this to life and congratulations to you and the entire production team.
Good job, Ollie! That was by far my favourite GCN series!
Love this whole video series! You've taken on some huge challenges, and being a "Physically unremarkable amateur, this one is the best so far. Inspirational for the rest of us physically unremarkable amateurs. Truly an epic journey that you've given us a look at. Looking forward to your next challenge, it'll be good whatever it is.
Absolutely bloody amazing man.
You are absolutely right to be proud of yourself mate. It’s not just an incredible hour that you produced , it’s the incredible last three months you produced and dedicated yourself to.
Then amongst all that you remained the humble and great guy that we all love to see each week.
Well done champion !
When ollie gets serious, it's like hearing Brian Cox talk about distant galaxies.
Simply awesome. This video is everything I love about GCN!
Remarkable Olly!!!! Very inspirational as well. You are definitely NOT a physiologically unremarkable amateur. Just the non beering alone is quite the accomplishment! I would love the chance for GCN to sponsor me for the Olly vs. Nathan hour of power challenge. We could start on opposite sides of the track and race for an hour!!!!
One word describes this series is “epic”. Nice one Ollie.
Ollie's record just proves how stupid all the aero crap is... After all, you could ride an ebike and go farther than Merckx. That is all this proves, that enough you buy enough speed you can beat a record set decades ago. Comparing the distances is a lie. Like Merckx said when Moser set his crap record, "this is the first time a weaker man has taken the record from a stronger man"
Ollie now try to break Beryl Burton's 12 hour record 277.25 miles.
1/12 th of the training is already completed and he has the gear!! :)
@@leeoien3645 LOL 10KM/hour less and TWELVE TIMES THE DISTANCE ! fucking hell, crazy.
@Oliver Bridgewood is definitely not unremarkable, and you are a great asset to cycling and to GCN. You can tell you love riding bikes and to me you're my favorite presenter!
Well done Ollie, an inspiration to younger and older riders alike that with hard work you can achieve PB's. Great journey and series!
OMG!!! 48 km for a non professional rider....absolutely amazing!!!!
Unlucky mate, you're still the best thing on GCN. Keep the great vids coming
Nicely done! I followed your example and everested, but I don't think I'll be biting off this challenge. Keep up the great videos!
The whole thing just astonishes me!! Congratulations Ollie. You'll probably never really know how many people will be inspired by this. Thank you.
That was amazing! I loved the whole series and this was the perfect culmination!! Thank you so much Ollie and team!!!
This video, this whole Project gives me chills. Ollie, such a fighter. Well done, Dr. B. Congrats to GCN for this project. Wow...
Respect Ollie, really respect!
I would have ten thumbs, I would lift them all.
great ride, man! thumbs up! incredible, that Eddie did his one without aerobars at almost 50Kmh... what an animal back then....
I wonder if you could calculate what power he must have been putting out to be able to do that with his gear at the time.
@@seanoleary771 and in additon the higher friction in his components due to the materials, plus non aero frame + wheels... non aero clothes...damn it still gets even more impressive.. though great performance by Ollie as a NO pro
@@seanoleary771 Not sure but i think i heard once an estimate of around 430 watts
@@seanoleary771 Ollie said it in his very first video starting this campaign, when Connor rode with the wig and helmet. 440 watts for an hour is what Merckx did.
@@seanoleary771 they calculated at 430w.
Congratulation! Its look like: "DREAMS IS COMING TRUE" Wish you a fast recovery.
Great effort.
To bad you didn't make it.
But it's a great job.
And it has been so fun to follow this series.
Keep up the great work.
Not bad for a guy with PhD... ;)
Absolutely insane - in fact.
Przemyslaw Sliwinski there are actually quite a few people that are great cyclists and PhDs, too. Aerocoach and Team Botrill are loaded with them.
@@LarsRR I believe the former GCN presenter, Ms. Emma Pooley, has a PhD degree as well.
Vittoria Bussi, holder of the womens hour record, has a PhD in Mathematics from Oxford I believe
@@alessandrosorenti2695 It must have been a well calculated effort then... ;)
Well, I mean, I think Ollie had a severe disadvantage, cause Merckx was dopped to the head...
An absolutely exhilarating series from GCN and in my book, by far the best and most inspirational, I had goosebumps at the start.... Well done Ollie, you are an inspiration to us regular Joes, well done.
Top work Olly, great video. I’m sure I saw you out training on a TT bike at Christmas around Wroot and the Trent area. 👍
go Ollie blooming well done for all of that just so wished we could of got there to see it all happening, keep up the training and your smash it soon and i would like to hope we can be there to see you do it
Ollie, Ollie, Ollie!!! My FTP is 283 Watts but I'm definitely heavier than Ollie is and there is just no way I could hold a TT position for an hour and do 283 Watts. Very inspiring!
Great effort! Hats off to you, Ollie!
I would love to know how fast Merckx would have been, if he had the know-how and tech we have today. Back then, they did about everything wrong, that they could have. They drilled holes into the frame, to make it lighter, but thereby made it less aero. Also, he hadn’t trained sufficiently at altitude, to make use of the lower air density in MX City. Lastly, he paced the ride pretty poorly, since he didn’t have a cadence, HR or power sensor.
He'd have to pass a modern drug test, so ...
Great viewing and content. Ollie that was very good and I really enjoyed it. Thank you Ollie and GCN for that. Looking forward for more from Ollie.
Good job !
You know so much more than you did three months ago
No amount of money could buy that.
Excellent work!
Great effort Ollie, for the Hour Attempt and the 3 months training. It’s the journey not the destination. And what a fantastic, inspiring journey this has been. Respect!
Oli
This made me very emotional. Congratulations Ollie! That was a titanic effort. Coming that close to the very best cyclist this world has ever seen, but not beating him is not a fail, it's an amazing achievement!
Awesome viewing - the whole series has been inspiring. Giving it your best shot is the true Corinthian spirit of sport - well done. All it needed was a Vangelis sound-track.
And a burning torch held high :)
Amazing work Olly and your team. Inspirational. Will you try again?
Absolutely amazing. Great ride Ollie. This is what cycling is about. You put the work in and gave it YOUR best for a solid hour. The race is with yourself and you are a winner!
wonderful!!! great work. it has been a joy ride (for us) to follow you. and i hope a bit of joy for you too. at least now in hindsight:)
Brilliant effort Ollie. You certainly put your heart and soul into that, chapeau 👏👏👏👏
What a fantastic effort. The lead up to the day, the training, the high tech clothing, the wind tunnel testing, the whole thing was well put together. Getting so close to Eddie's time is remarkable and a great achievement.
Wow CONGRATS Ollie for this great effort, amazing work, even without beating Eddy.
And it’s also amazing how The Sufferfest can do this but struggling completely with something easy like a Apple TV app.
Mega respect, Ollie. Such humility. You have no idea how many people you have inspired.
Well done, Ollie - that was incredible. You should be very proud of your achievement. Total respect 👍😊
At work. Stood and clapped. Bravo Ollie. A honor to watch a brilliant attempt. Bravo 🚴👏👏👏👏
What an excellent series! Well done for everything and I actually had a tear in my eye watching how you felt about it all at the end as we’ve all watched you train and seen how much it meant to you! Inspirational.
Lots that could be said about this attempt, but maybe best summarized... chapeau.
Congratulations Ollie whether you wanted to or not, you have been pure inspiration 💜💕
Great job, Olie! But Merckx's record was at 2300 meters on a much bigger track, so he rode lots fewer turns, and of much wider radius. Those differences are huge. My calculations have you beating him by 3 km if you used the same track!
Nice!! :)
Absolute incredible effort. The commitment and dedication you put into this challenge is amazing. Congrats on you ride.
I wish I could give this a thumbs up for every kM you did! The personal discipline you displayed during training is truly inspirational. Outstanding job Olly!
It’s an amazing ride for a non-pro
