Why Rationalizing with OCD Makes It Worse

  • OCD thoughts and behaviors can be wildly irrational. It can make you wash and re-wash, even though intellectually you know you are clean. It can make you check and re-check, even though you know what you saw. It can make you think and re-think, even though you know how you feel.
This is the nature of OCD. This is why it is often called the doubting disease. We get caught in a cycle of “but what if…” and that uncertainty feeds the vicious cycle of compulsive behaviors.
Unfortunately many of us will mentally argue with our intrusive thoughts thinking we can beat OCD with logic. Sadly, that only grows the OCD. Logic and rational thinking don’t have any impact on OCD, in fact when you debate your thoughts, it only serves to grow those thoughts bigger.
In this week’s UA-cam video I talk about how rationalizing with OCD makes your OCD bigger and what to do instead.
Stay tuned for a podcast episode for parents on this same topic! When we try to rationalize OCD thoughts with our kids and teens, we take the risk of shutting them down and making them feel more shame and guilt.
More on that in a few weeks!

So when my son asks me if his mind can cause other people to forget about him, I know I shouldn’t say “no that’s not possible and it makes no sense” but what *should* I say?
