I would strongly Advise Anyone and Everyone to only Choose from Heavy and especially Assault mechs for this. If you look at the MC prices for Hero Mechs you can see that for the Price of 1 Assault Hero you could get 2-3 Light Hero's. So this way you get one of the more expensive Heroes for Free and then can use the MC that keeps piling up from these events, little by little. To buy a few cheaper ones on a Sale!
I understand if you want to optimize the choice you get because it is unlimited MC, pick a free hero mech is a great event. There are going to be people who prefer light and medium mechs. No use in picking up the Ultraviolet if you are never going to run the Dire Wolf. This video is very helpful for newer people coming back to MWO.
I think the main point in this comment thread is to pick the most MC Hero that you like, if that is a medium then that's ok, just something to bear in mind when making this decision.
What viewers need to recognize on the clan Omni's he passed on, Shard, Mist Lynx, etc is unless a Cbill variant has a specific feature in CT, the hero's can use all the omni pods plus Cbill bonus. I also find it interesting amongst the 3 content creators, the choices due to preferences and play style what they say is good or crap in their opinions. I have a few of the ones NGNG passed on, but i have them for specific builds i like specializing in something i saw in either the IS or Clan version. Great video, thanks!
Interesting to see the different perspectives here. I'm getting a round up of different content creators at the moment and you all make some *very* different choices. Light mech: Katana Kat for LPPC spam. Medium mech: Frenzy because boating missiles is glorious. Heavy: Tempest for mid range MRM/ML spam. Assault: Scorch. 85 tons of fun with a solid splat.
i went with the Battlemaster Hellslinger myself and i am enjoyin it. (2 SN-PPC, 1 MRM-10, 1 MRM-30). honestly its the closest thing to a Brawling mech that i currently and probably the one i have the most fun with from that play style. (i much prefer mid range versatility)

I know and totally agree, just giving a High MC list in case someone looks and see a mech they always wanted there so they can use their MC in other less expensive mechs. Keep on with these great videos and streams! Personally I'm interested in the Rancor for those high M-mounts, Boar's head for the extra tankiness (and complete my collection), Sleipnir (yessss) and Spirit bear :)
I'm a brand new player, but i came here hoping to get a second opinion/evaluation of the roughneck. bought & built a Bolt with dual RAC/5 + 3 erml as my first purchase, and it feels really good. no clue what I'm doing map-wise, but it feels like a forgiving mech & strategy for new folks.
Looking back on this a year later it's insane how many of these got massive quirk changes that make them way better, like the X5 and certainly the Belial
As far as my opinion on this and which mechs I would recommend, when it comes to lights, I agree with you 100%, as the Locust can be good for speed or stealth whether or not you build it to troll people, the main 3 lights mentioned yes I agree 100% with what you said those 3 are definitely a good choice cause they offer a lot as far as light mechs go and have great quirks, for mediums I agree for the most part however I would personally give the crab and bushwacker a little more credit where its due, they are by far the 2 tankiest medium mechs in the game, they can be annoying to fight against (they just dont like to die) as far as their benefits over their non-hero counterparts yes they have a c-bill bonus and the crab, well thats pretty much the only crab capable of ballistics, and as far as the bushwacker, if you look at the quirks theres one that no other bushwackers have that makes it kinda op, as every1 here may know the bushwackers have decent armor and structure but have amazing hitboxes (especially good from frontal angles) and arent too large, but the hero has a crit hit chance reduction quirk, which makes it just a little more annoying to kill. As far as heavies and assaults go I havent played them enough to know much or really have an opinion but I will say that the void hero is not getting much credit here, as it has one good thing, that is (if you include the speed gained from its masc) it is the fastest heavy in the game (as far as i know, lemme know if im wrong) and pair that with it having more tonnage than mediums or lights it can be a good balance between being super fast and having good weaponry especially considering it has atleast a decent amount of energy points. besides that i have nothing else to say...
Interesting that you didn't include the Fafnir Wrath. It's an LRM boat that farms C-Bills like a champ! Regularly get 1000 damage with the Wrath, it's great to line your bank with C-Bills!
I'd be going Grinner, Blackjack (because Snub and 6 Heavy Machine guns is just FUN), Black widow maybe Jester, Sleipnir (Double Heavy Gauss meltage), Scorch (classic torso twist and massive damage output)
You glossed over the Shard, saying it has nothing unique, but it does have two unique side torsos. One gives unique ballistic points and the other gives a missile point. The missile torso kinda blows, but the ballistic side torso allows you to make some decent MG builds on the Cheetah. Pretty solid if youre looking for the Piranha playstyle but want a bit more armor, ECM and jumpjets.
That Ultraviolet has 2 energy, 2 ballistic and 1 missile. How can you put 8 ballistics in it if theres only 2 slots for them? New to the game and still learning here. :)
Some clan mechs are Omni-mechs. These omni-mechs can swap every thing but the center torso between the different variants. So you take the 4 ballistic in the arms from the UV and use the side torso's from other varietals to get 4 more in the side torsos.
yeah out of the lineup I think Scorch is one i still need in my roster. also if you're lucky enough you might get enough free MC from the lootbags to buy a light hero that way.
DO NOT GET THE BLUDGEON!!! After each patch, this thing stays weak. Its basically a slightly faster awesome without the quirks and niceties of an awesome. Basically, If a clan mech will certainly lose against a decent IS chassis, ton for ton, its trash. The mech still needs a buff. How? Add a ghost heat quirk for peeps lpls. Currently, you can use a build with 3lpls... but its too hot to be optimal, easily outgunned by a timberwolf.
Hard pass on Misery? 1 Ballistic with 4 energy combined with best profile in the game. Battlefields are littered with broken shells of Timberwolves that tried to compete with my Misery.
For newer players..Out of Seans top picks for each class.. I would suggest: Light: Kitfox Purifier (3xerml & ECM), Medium: Dervish Frenzy (2x MRM 30 or ALL the SRMs) Heavy: Hellbringer Virago (any combo of large lasers and ECM) Assault: Mad Cat MKII (2x UAC10 6xMPL or 2x Gauss 6x ERML)
Or Cyclops Sleipnir as an assault, with quad LBX-10. Never had a bad game with it. Even when screwing up, you will make some heavy damage to the enemy team before falling. Also, pretty nice to destroy those pesky lights.
I was sorely tempted by the Katana Kat, because I love Panthers. But I recently bought the Resistance pack one for it's cool damaged paintjob and it's "special geometry", with real money, so I want to enjoy that one for a while before I get another. The mech I ended up picking was the Stalker Misery because I've been really enjoying the Stalker 3F I got recently. I think I like the 3F I have better, but I'm still playing around with the Misery and that opinion might change once I find a build that I really like.
"Heavy Metal ... no" WRONG!!, YES for 2 reasons it´s heavy metal and has custom warhorn ... .. also as a personal reason it´s a bit of a memento to totalbiscuit for me simply cause he used it ... doesn´t matter if it´s "good" or not ... well i did get mine during a 50% sale as i had the MC to spare ..
And yet, among all the mechs I enjoy the most and in which I get the highest number of kills and most damage, none are heroes. I think new players are especially vulnerable to believing that if they just spend real money for the mechs with the most colorful camo, they are buying improved performance. That is not at all the case. (So, yeah...take advantage of the freebies in the current event and see for yourself.)
Mauler knockout is very underrated IMO. Very good mounts for the energy and missile weapons. Can run MRMs, PPC, large lasers, big ballistics etc - very flexible. Can snipe very well with 4x LL and 2x Gauss for example (one of Data's preferred builds). Or brawl with a bunch of SRM (or MRM), medium/pulse lasers, and 2x ballistics of your choice. 2x Energy, 4x Missile, and 2x ballistics can pack a lot of firepower.
ComStar is the savior of the Inner Sphere, protecting us from Nuke Crazy Clanners and Blakists. ComStar is our only hope! Thank you for fleshing out the Hero selections, very informative. I mostly play Clan Heavies, and most of the heroes in the novels run heavies, so I went with the Virago, I have 4 other Hellbringers, so AMS and ECM are available with Omnipods.
im probably going to do that as well cause i have almost every hero in the game and i dont need any and this will sit in the back of my garage and gather dust
Deathstrike. I didn't see the builds that I would consider the strongest options in the video. In my opinion, one of the strongest midrange mechs overall. 2xGauss 2xHLL 4xERML has good range and great alpha. Insane peek mech. You can also do mid-close with 2xUAC10 6xMPL which also has good brawling capability. 2 big ballistic options and 6 energy gives tons of flexibility for trying your own as well. Have fun with this beast if you get it, it's a fun one.
I use the Sabre as a Large Laser boat. any type works. The hard points are super high for hill poking, and the armor buffs give you the ability to actually take a little bit of return fire while the burn finishes. Usually end up with ~400 damage, which is a good average for a light.
Go for a Heavy or Assault, possibly Clan Omnimech - those tend to be the most expensive. You can buy the more affordable mechs for the MC you get from the events, preferably when they're on sale. That way, you get the most bang for your bucks.
Torn between spirit bear or UV. I got Kodiak 3 which is fun with quad gauss and I don't see myself brawling too much using Kodiaks since they have huge torso. So I think UV would be the most logically expensive choice.
Agreed. Both are fun but if you don't have the UV, get it and use 8 AC, good suppression and sniper, put skills on Gyro, range, velocity and heat... BTW Spirit bear I think you can use MASC so there's that
Yeah I have fun with it and if you want a dakka or suppressor then it's a nice mech sice it has the extra 4 ballistic hardpoints, but there are other C-Bill variants if you want more of a laser vomit, if you only want a dual AC or Gauss then again there are other options, depends on how you like to play.
@@armchairexpert4151 The problem with the SB is it's a bit of a one trick 'bear?'. Fun for cheezing with SRMS/AC20 and MASC but the UV creates some more options with the extra ballistic slots.
A great breakdown on the pros and cons of each of these. Doubt I'll be gunning for a hero though as I've found the game problematic since the last patch. As a moderate player just trying to crack T2, I'm very reliant on a team that uses comms and is aware of basic strats. The last couple of weeks have been nothing but radio silence and W button out of good positions and into bad. Sadly too frustrating to enjoy.
@@mrharvest If I come back it will only be playing with a unit. Part of the reason I rage quit was after a series of games where I made the right calls (I think) but got no engagement. At the end of the game, when the wipeout you warned against has happened - it's difficult not to be angry. E.g - HPG Manifold - Domination. Enemy put 4 on the walls. My team just push for the tea stain. I warn that we'll get sniped to death a suggest holding the basement to counter - and if the enemy push it before team members come off the wall, we have the advantage. I hit the basement with one other. Rest of the team stay on top and get sniped to death. Game after game after game.
@@JagHiroshi RIGHT! basement strat always wins. just wait for the enemy to try and poke after getting a kill or two. They come in and with communication, its ezpz
Heads up on the Blood Kit (Arctic Wolf Hero). Its not an omni mech like its C-bill counterparts; its just a clan battlemech. You will be buying what you get. No pod swapping sadly.
Strongest heros for overall play, Purifier, Bloodlust, Paralyzer, Pakhet, Black Widow, Sleipnir, and Deathstrike. Mechs like Virago are strong, but for more niche roles, such as erll. Similar for Ultraviolet. Generally, Black Widow and Sleipnir are among the best generalists for heros.
Hellslinger does 6 SNPPCs and does it REALLY well. You really shouldn't sleep on it. XL350 + 6SNPPCs is a pocket annihilator that can poke with 4/6 of the ppcs and just eat the minute ghost for 4, then fire 3 + 3 when enemies are up close or you dont have anywhere to hillhump.
Roughnecks are pretty good. Very Solid in terms of durability, Havent played the Reaver but the Bolt and Powerhouse are both good. the Bolt gets real nice hardpoints and was a great mech to transfer my kinda whacky JM6-S build that was fun but when the JagerMech quirk pass came basically made it a waste of the mech. so if you have any nutty ballistic builds it'll probably work. The Powerhouse I have built as a Fat Shadowhawk 2D2 minus the JJs, AC20 and 3 SRM6 is pretty solid, and is basically the exact placement as the 2D2, it does however lose speed due to a low Engine Size cap. But thats my own thoughts with the Roughnecks, hope this help for people looking at them for this event.
The Sabre is actually the best chassis in the Incubus line if you're doing two large energy weapons, like 2 HLL or something. Every other Incubus has inferior quirks for that type of build.
Kin Wolf and Chironex are solid mechs. 4xHLL on the Kin Wolf and it just demolishes components and the Chironex has alot of versatility. I will most likely go for the EXE-CH since I simply don't own one.
I would recommend an omnimech like the ultraviolet. They have unique hardpoints that are useful but you can’t get from the mech lab. And pgi hasn’t made buying individual hero omnipods for a lil bit of mc a thing yet.
I went for the Cherbi...it takes some time getting used to it. Should have gone for a familiar mech as I planned to first, but then I second-guessed myself
The thing about the Warhawk and stalker is that the non hero variants are generally better. Warhawk prime is perfect for 4 erppcs with the set of eight bonus.
Great list tho the hightlander is better then the scortch for armor and the iv4 is better then the hellbringer but still a great roundup :) congrats and the babby girl well done old man :P
Oh man, you got my thinking again :D I was gonna choose between the Nightstar and the Kodiak. Kodiak because speed bursts coupled with amazing close range firepower. Nightstar because two MRM 40 and four ER Mediums instantly clicked with me. I initially thought about the Cyclops as well, but ruled it out because quad LBX10s or double Gauss on a slow mech with basically no quirks didn't sound fun to me. But double heavy Gauss rifles... now I suddenly like it.
It really just depends on what weight class you are leaning towards when you play. For me I'm learning how to play Direwolf and only the hero Ultraviolet has 2 ballistic hard points on both arms so I'll be getting that. For IS and Clan battlemechs really just look for quirks and hard points, there are some expectations like some lights' profile are so small like Pirate's Bane that it's hard for opponent to fight against when you hug and run around his/her legs.
The assault mechs are worth getting based off the cost. Especially Ultraviolet as its the most MC's. You can always buy a light or medium with MC from goody bags and challenges.
pick one based on what your skill is and if you like the paint, this video pretty much summed up the firepower but if you cant hit the side of a barn with a peep or gauss then dont pick one that excels with them. they give enough mc away in this game you can always buy more when they have a 50% off sale....several times a year
@@perry92964 I know I'm legendary founder ;) but keep up good work tiring to be helpful to people. More I own a lot of hero's already not sure what one I want of the ones I don't own ;)
the way you blew off the bushwhacker was way off, it is the best bushy out of all of them, it does everything the others can do except missile boat and its tanky as heck. great for new players. but i suspect everyone is going for the higher priced mechs just because
I love my High Rollers (I have two), but you can do the same builds with the BSW-X1. There are some differences, but that hero mech is made for two RAC5s, and you can do that one with other variants.

Totally agree. Ultraviolet Direwolf is the most MC's so it seems a good option based on cost. Next would be anything else in the 6-7000 range.
Omnimechs are generally more expensive, so the best buy would indeed be something like the Direwolf Ultraviolet or the Blood Asp Rancor.

@@Snake2208x Yeah, that's why I am a bit conflicted, but it seems UV is the winner as the most expensive mech for free
L - pirate bane
M - golden boy
H - flame
A - sleipnir
adder, cougar and kit fox are my fav lite mechs. O love bird style mechs. I.S. tears fillers for my shadowkat cup
why cant all mwo players be chill like this guy
I went for the Deathstrike. 2 UAC-20s and 6 ER Smalls is my preferred build.
Remake the video for 2023s event!!
katana kat with 3 lppc and 100m jump is extremely fun. yes its got DOUBLE the jump distance as the other panthers!
Have you considered joining a unit or making calls yourself?
The Arrow is amazing. 6 heavy machine guns, a large pulse, a medium pulse, and an ER medium.
jokes
It's the mech I play the most. RAC5 5 MG & 2 ERML
Hunstman Pakhet is the only way to get a 8x Missile hardpoint Huntsman btw.
96 damage split between left + right is no joke.
My choices in assaults are looking more like either a Scorch, Spirit Bear, or the Deathstrike.
The thing about the Warhawk and stalker is that the non hero variants are generally better. Warhawk prime is perfect for 4 erppcs with the set of eight bonus.
I have an AS7-D(F) ... is this still good?
Light: URM K9
MEDIUM: KTO 20
HEAVY: WHM 6D
ASSAULT: BNC 3M
Great list tho the hightlander is better then the scortch for armor and the iv4 is better then the hellbringer but still a great roundup :) congrats and the babby girl well done old man :P
The Summoner has a great UAC20 Heavy medium build. Makes it Clan heavy hunchback and I love it.
Sheesh, I just realized how many of these already are in my mech bays.
Oh man, you got my thinking again :D
I was gonna choose between the Nightstar and the Kodiak.
Stalker 3FB can do MRM 40 quad med with ecm
Sparky is amazing, glad it's still doing well!
thx i went with the spirit bear
had a deathstrike a while, super solid mech
5 large lasers is really fun on the Dao Breaker
how you gonna diss the arrow... :(
Still not sure what hero to pick
There are some differences, but that hero mech is made for two RAC5s, and you can do that one with other variants.
well it make sense to go for the more expansive mechs give you wont have to pay for it.
