Hi Seb, Thanks buddy! Start now.... I had a late recovery. At 40, I was hit sitting at a red light and couldn't surf for 3 years because of a lower back injury. All I was good at was sitting on the couch, eating... and I was very good at the eating. When I got hit, I was 180 lbs 3 years later, I was 305 lbs When I could surf again, my weight and bad shoulders made my "pop-up" a thing of the past... so I reluctantly bought a huge SUP. Bada Bing, Bada Boom! Recovery came quickly and the fun started again. SUP surfing and paddling changed my life completely.... now more fit and stoked than ever. I turn 74 in a few days, and I every day I expect to surf better. I ride my bike hard, paddle for pleasure (not speed) and walk the beaches. I finally got myself on a healthy awesome food track and dropping to weights that I haven't seen since that rear ender sidelined me. Every Birthday make me happy, because I am still able to charge ahead with optimism and high goals. Expect more!!
Hey Rick, just got my 8 10 Placid and surfed it in head high off surf…Wow, it’s as good as you said it was. I’m a bit heavier and not as good surfer as you, so spent a fair bit of time falling off. Hopefully, I’ll get used to it’s tippyness. I surfed it as a quad…Boy, it turns and carves so sweet. Thanx for your reviews…Cheers NZ Terry
Hi Terry thanks for the update! One thing on the Placid: Stand a bit forward of the handle and you will get the best stability... the tail is very thin and will dip quickly if your weight shifts back. It will get easier as you adapt to your new Placid..... such a fun board!!!
Thanx for that Rick…makes perfect sense now. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that at the time…duh!! Really appreciate those helpful tips Rick….keep ‘em coming. Cheers T
Nice riding there( though I guess I could say that about anything you stand on😁) I'm on the hunt for my next sunova and you're not making the decision easy for me Rick. Great video, I like the extra riding and finning details you slipped in there
Thanks Kingsley :-) Email me... we can have a conversation about what your goals are. The boards all have fairly well defined areas of best use, although some cover a lot of bases. supthecreek@gmail.com
I purchased the Sunova TR3 9’6” X 32 X 15/16 with 150L This is a great wave rider as I weight about 220lbs. I have been in about 5’ waves and as small as 1 or 2’ This is a fun board and you can move it around very easy. Thanks for the video PS - I surfed with you in Ft Pierce FL
Hi Dale! I hope you are holding down the Fort! I will probably be back for the winter... but not sure when Stoked you are loving your 9'6 Flash, I was on the phone when with the shop as you bought it! I will ask if I can ride it when I am down this winter!!!!
@@rickweeks you are Brave I give you that RICK! lol uhhh winter 🤦🏽♂️ not looking forward to getting back in that whale blubber suit lol . but looking forward to your beaches again in the winter lol ..
Hi Robert and the Netherlands I biked through the Tulip fields and the canals of Amsterdam in the 60's.... such a beautiful place! I haven't ridden the Speeed since I got my first Creek, since I designed the Creek with the Speeed tail, it was my "next step" board.
@@rickweeks Same here Rick, I have both (Sp9'2 and Cr9'4) and going fast 'nuf on the Creek! I like how it turns from the middle. Big up for your video's STC!
Hiya STC, howzit going. Got myself a PL8'10" I ám surprised that the board is -like you said- a bit more stable than my 8'3"Shroom in the wonk we get and call surf !! Q re/ the Placid:: Have you tried the side bites (the two larger ones) in the rear inserts? And what are your thoughts on riding the 8'10" as a 2+1? I look forward to some footage of you charging the PL8'7"! Stay fit and healthy. And always be nice to Eilene! :-) Aloha from the NL's!
H RD, all is fine, thank you! I prefer small fins in the rear quad spot. I think big fins would stiffen it up. I am riding the 8’7 Placid as a thruster with 4.7” standard rake surfboard fins. Go to my channel by just clicking my name above. There is a short vid on the 8’7 Never ride anything as a 2 + 1, so I can’t comment on how it would work. Try everything! I never mess with E…. we don’t call her “wrecking ball” for nothing 🤣
Hi Rick, out of so many boards you got and tested along these last years, is there one you really prefer overall? Meaning, all of those are top good, nice boards and for many different reasons, but, what is the BOARD you would never stay without? Can you tell us please?
I have been doing reviews since my first Allwave in 2012 Owned boards from fanatic, Naish, Starboard, Hobie, others I can't remember the names of. Then I found Sunova. They have enough models to keep me forever busy and happy! Which board? It depends on the waves and conditions... like golf clubs. Which is more important... the driver or putter? Every now and then a special board comes along. The Creek held my focus for a few years... My surfing has changed with age, so board preferences evolve in a constant pursuit to improve as my body fights improvement. I currently have more favorites than ever! GenRation: SP25, Kanga and Wedge Sunova: Placid, Flash, Point Break I do rely on my 9'6 Kanga and have had far more sessions on it this year.... but if conditions allow, I will choose SP25 or Placid.
It looks like you brake all the rules when ride an 8"10. But what I can see it fits. What to surf is sometimes like the big question: Which shoes should I wear today?
Hi UST, ha ha... I have never been very good at following rules 😆 I have a LOT of shoes to wear, but the Placid is always an easy pick. Since this vid, I got an 8'7 and use it when conditions are right.
They are different boards. Size for size, the Placid is more stable because it is wider, so I can ride a smaller board. In medium size waves the Placid is snappier and looser. I like the 5 fin option on the Placid In bigger or more hollow waves the Creek is the better choice
No Sean, it was my buddies and there were no waves when I was visiting. I was stoked to do a stability test on 3 new shapes of similar length. Next time!

I made adjustments to my surfing after age 69, when I started to see a breakdown in style.
Someday I may do a video on the process

Age to volume ratio..2 liters per year over 50
ha ha... maybe that's the key! The Plant Eater Factor sounds better than the Guild Factor! 🙂
I'm so tired of windchop. Jealous of the clean waves.
I am lucky in that if I am willing to drive a few hours, I can usually find a break where the wind is offshore.
