I almost failed to make any images

    I almost never fail to come home with an image, but sometimes ...just sometimes, I make a call that was clearly not my best. Images should never come too easly and I do believe that because it would spoil the persuit if they did. I've failed many times over the years and it just doesn't really worry me on the whole but when it comes to making a film, I do feel the pressure when I am not getting any images at all. In this video I go out once again to the Northern part of the Island of Iona at sunset to shoot the beach one last time. My images are hard won I feel and possibly not my best but let's not focus on that. After all, who could be down in such a joyful location and do I really care if I don't make any images?
    This and my last film is decicated to my partner's dad, the Rev Donald Moxon who passed away in October 2019. Due to COVID travel restrictions we were unable to scatter his ashes until June this year 2021 when we finally made this trip. Don was an extremely kind, forgiving and inspirational man who gave a lot in his life and asked for very little in return. To me he was like my second father and had it not been for his love of Iona and all that it represents, I would almost certainly have never had the chance to fall in love with the place myself, albeit for very different reasons. Don was a member of the Iona community and visited Iona most years throughout his life. Some of his younger years were even spent helping to renovate the abbey.

    The life of a photographer is so much harder than a videographer. Elements have to come together at just the right time for your photos whereas the videographer can tell a story in any light or conditions 👍😁

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      Absolutely Ken. It's sort of the opposite of how you are able to film yours. There's much less emphasis on the video but I still have to try and tell the story and quite honestly, it can be stressful and a balancing act all the time! I covered a lot of ground on this film, frantically walking up and down the beach looking for a decent shot because at the time, I wasn't convinced by the fist location. I do envy the Little Red Camper!

    Great explanations on how snd why you take those shots. I only wish I knew PS to be able to blend like you and many others know. I shoot RAM and jpg. But I only work jpgs. As my version of PS (6)does not understand my cameras RAW files. I know there is a work around but I guess don’t have the patience to do it. TFS

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  3 роки тому

      Perhaps look at some videos and update your PS. It will transform your photography. The way you are working is similar to taking a print film to the high street. There's little reward at the end for your efforts and when you consider the cost of cameras, not making the best out of the files is an injustice! The learning curve is not as steep as you might think for basic adjustments and it's always better to work on the RAW file.

    Hi Simon, lovely video mate. It’s awesome to see you but do in these full on landscape shots, particularly in the Scottish islands. I know how hard it is sometimes to try and do a vlog take photographs and do video all at the same time. I’ve often find myself as well, that busy running around chasing late that I do forget to take photographs sometimes.

    Hey Simon, I'm very drawn in by your portrait shot of the setting sun, the smokey whiteness in the FG wave action from the slow shutter, the reflected and contrasting warmth on the rocks from the sun....typically my eye wants to travel from the FG to the BG, but in this image for me at least, it's exactly the opposite - as the BG sun is creating this FG steamy warmth - and I like it very much. Good shootin'!

    Lovely images, I think my favourite this time is the one you were taking where you took a few different exposures and blended them together, plus the one from your previous trip was also very beautiful.
    It struck me just how fantastic the beaches are in that part of the world. When we visited the white sands and turquoise water made it look something like a carribean island... Albeit rather cooler 😂

    • @SimonBoothPhotography

      The Scottish beaches are rated among the most beautiful in the world. I believe a programme or advertisement (can't remember which) with a Caribbean theme was once shot on Harris.

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks for your thoughts and ideas! My love of photography comes from shooting out in nature and I wouldn't get any satisfaction from shooting in the city. I suppose you argue that it's a challenge but I'd be like a fish out of water and I know where my skills lie. On the mountain trekking front and on a personal note, I have rarely been impressed by any high mountain photography taken here in the UK and I know that sounds hard to believe but it just doesn't do it for me and I have to enjoy what I do. The only mountain photography that I have thoroughly enjoyed is the work of Colin Prior but I think even he would argue now, carrying a full medium format rig and camping gear at my age would be absolute madness and no fun!

      This comment gave me a chuckle Joshua! I just knew someone would pick up on that!. My better half was also yelling the same at the pc when I showed her the final edit. In truth and this certainly doesn't come across on the film. I possibly could have aligned the shot up in that short space of time but the light was full on into the camera and all those rocks in the middle ground would have been black silhouettes and unsightly shapes across the frame. This was why I decided not to run around frantically to try and grab something. The later light was much more complimentary, even if the composition wasn't!
