You are right. I am a chiropractor and I put a patients shoulder back in place yesterday using this exact technique and the patient looked at me like I was a miracle worker, lol!
The humerus should be in adduction. The trapezius should not be significantly inhibiting reduction but the subscapularis (inaccessible), the deltoid and biceps (more) should be. These should be massaged. The pt. should be sitting bolt upright with the shoulders back. Then this technique works very well and is much safer than some others.
