  • The Austin 7 wasnt just Britain's first home grown people's car, it was the template for modern motoring around the world, setting standards we still use 100 years later. It was an affordable car for the masses, but the lucky ones could stretch to the posher coach built fabric bodied saloon, and this 1931 Seven is one of the survivors.

My first car at 17 was a ' 38 7 Ruby ,Matt, which I rebuilt from 2 cars whilst at school as a project and always loved these quirky cars.A few years ago , the opportunity arose to buy ' 28 Fabric Top Hat saloon, a charming tiny car that made people smile wherever it went .However, in a different world , it was a challenge to cope with arrogant and impatient drivers surrounding you , together with non-coupled brakes, the partnership was short lived and almost felt guilty giving up on her .However , she was replaced with a ' 61 Austin Seven Mini which was an excellent compromise !.

I love classic cars, from the engineering that went into the design to via supply chain to building them in an era where computers never existed and even telephone lines were limited. The 7 is a true British classic in so many different guises. The foibles gave them character. Thanks for sharing.

My Dad related a story that as a child in Lincolnshire they had to traverse a rare hill.
in their Austin 7. His Mum was a nervous driver and going down the hill he told his Mum that Dad always put it in neutral going down here and that it made the car go much better. His mother ‘stuck to the helm’ but it was a bit scary. He said he got a good boxing around the ears for that. 😄

The term crash box most accurately applies to gearboxes that actually move the gears in and out of mesh. The A7 gearbox is constant mesh gearbox, with the ratios being selected with dog clutches. Add some automatic means of matching the speed before the dog clutch engages and you have a synchronised gearbox.

Austin 7's were fitted with self starters from 1924 onwards. Only the first 1923 models required to be started on the handle. The handles were retained just as a useful feature right up to the last Ruby models in 1938. In 1922 when the model was introduced, 19" wheels were normal for the day. These cars are easy to drive if one knows how to drive a car and the brakes are adequate if in proper condition and properly adjusted.
Herbert Austin designed the Austin 7 as an alternative to the motorcycles and sidecars of the day and the dimensions of the first 7's were roughly of the same width and length of a combo. Post 1931 models were larger and full 4 seaters. It must be remembered that before WW2 people were rather smaller than those of today.

Austin kept removable crank starters into the 70s. What was almost my first car was an Austin A60 Cambridge that had a starting crank in the boot. The front number plate was mounted below the bumper to allow access to the hole through the bumper.

has 2 more gauges than a Model T! Unless one got the optional speedo... Neat car... Love the "Sidecar Triple Duty" tires/tyres....
Friendly hint, a thumb saver, never hook your thumb around the handle, keep it on the same side of the crank as the fingers. If it kicks backwards, could lose or break that thumb.
Hint taken from the wonderful book "Those Damn Model T's" from the 1920's....

      @GSimpsonOAM Місяць тому +1

To be fair. The sevens engine is so small compared to the T the kickback will not hurt you.
I have an Austin Eight and cranked that a few times. Easy start on the crank.
I am a bit more wary when cranking the Landrover.
Suffered a flat battery in the Landrover at the supermarket. I wound it over a couple of times with the crank to get the fuel through. A young boy was curious and I told him I was winding the spring to make it go. He seemed sceptical but his eyes when it started and I drove off was priceless.

At 07:41 we have a shot very much like so many others of cars of the '30s, '40s and '50s that all make me shake my head and wonder: when people then saw how far down the engine actually sat in the frame between the towering cowl and radiator to either end (with the almost vertical radiator hose!), didn't anyone think, "Wait, hang on a minute...." ?

I don't have any first-hand experience, but I do remember being told to never, ever, crank-start a car with your thumb across the handle. Always just cradle the handle in your hand, so should it get jerked out of your hand, it will not break any of your bones. Does that not apply to the Austin 7?

My Grandmother had a Ruby. I think I remember a story where it had more "power" going backwards than forwards, so sometimes where you found a steep hill a bit of a challenge, you'd be better off reversing up it zig zag style.
Of course, Issigonis began his motoring career racing Austin 7's.
